La Riviera published::fall10 _suckerPUNCH _theoremas professor::gabriel esquivel team members::jeffrey quantz//heather davis//matt miller ky coffman//michael tomaso la riviera is the result of a digital design-build course taught at texas a&m university by gabriel esquivel during the spring of 2010. the intention of this course was to explore groundbreaking modeling techniques, emerging fabrication processes and to utilize the school’s large scale design-build facilities. commissioned by local restaurant, la riviera, to renovate their entry space, the concept behind the project was to produce a new atmosphere, more sensual and suitable for the type of food served. some of the sensibilities explored were pastries techniques like fondant, frosting and cake ornamentation. the reason behind the research was to produce a series of sensations using materialism and form or specific perceptions, sensations and actions, basically interpreting wall, furniture and ceiling surfaces as frosting and fondant with ornament on it. the project’s scope included a new bar, wall ornaments and a ceiling installation. Due to an extremely tight budget, the team developed innovative processes to reduce costs while achieving the desired atmosphere. the project was completed in the fall of 2010.

fenway centre public market//cafe & bistro//hotel//batting cages//spring10 fenway centre proposes the creation of a space that connects the community of fenway park. currently an automotive repair and garage facility, this site would be the new home of the boston red sox by way of a boutique hotel and indoor batting facility. possibly catching a glimpse of their favorite player, the community would now be connected to its team through the cafe, bistro and below grade public market. this below grade space would become a venue for the community of fenway to gather, buy & sell local produce, and to safely traverse to and from fenway park.

embroche anza falco museum of design//houston, tx//fall 09 this project is an existing one, built in 2010. this effort represents an alternative of what has been proposed. the need for an alternative art, architecture & design museum in houston is imminent. addressing the way materials are not just about construction choices but also a means of creating diverse sensations in a space, focusing on the effects produced by the materials’ textures & surfaces. through pl ayful manipul ation of such elements, beauty, ornament, & pat tern have thus found their way back into contempor ary design. these explor ations avoid a neo-utilitarian tone in favor of aesthetic & psychological investigations. they could be productions that aspire to elicit a heightened awareness of our material environment.

the texas a&m university campus is closed and unconnected to adjacent student social gathering plaza known as “northgate. the institutional 5 story parking garage is what current patrons view when entering the campus from northgate. in order to connect the northgate community to the university and soften this boundary condition, this project proposes to utilize the long narrow setback of land in between the garage and northgate as a community arts center.
