GENERAL PREFACE

The first three Readers in the lrarning English Series have proved very successful. Following on this, the Bnglish Association has been able, with financial assistance from the Canadian International Development A$ency, to produce several more readers in the series and make them widely available at readily affordable prices The Learning English Series has been designed especially for Lankan students with words and pictures that are familiar to ttrem. This is because learning is made easier when confidence is built up and this is best developed through material that is not strange or totally alien to the learner's culture. Accordingly, the greater number of books a student is given the opportunity of reading, the less alienated he or she will feel. For this reason we hope all students will have access to a number of books at each level including the workbooks. As planned at the outset, five levels of Read.ershave now been made available. They are carefully graded and adopt different approaches. trt is not essential that students go through all of them in order. Students at varying degrees of proficiency may begin at the level which suits them best. Quick students will be able to pi'ogress on to the next level after reading just a single Reader at one level. However, as the books have been produced primarily to educate through enjoyrnent, we hope that students will take;pleasure in reading through as many books as possible at each level.
