The Nordhavn 46 is one of the most highly regarded serious cruising trawlers ever designed and is still considered, along with the Nordhavn 62, to be Jeff Leishman’s best designs. The first Nordhavn design, the 46, has accounted for more circumnavigations than any other production trawler and sister ships are scattered in cruising waters across the globe. Hanuman is a later built Nordhavn 46 and includes numerous upgrades over earlier designs. Additionally, Hanuman is one of few 46’s fitted with a flying bridge giving an additional fairweather helm station and expansive space for entertaining and being in nature. Hanuman is a proven sea going vessel cruising extensively from Maine to the Bahamas and has been given the best of care by her 4 owners (the previous owner was a boat yard owner), with significant upgrades provided by the current owner of 6 years. The owner has cruised the vessel over 15,000 nautical miles and has lavished her with attention at the best yards with almost every system rebuilt or replaced. Hanuman is hull 71 (out of 83) delivered to her original owners in 2000. Hanuman features the midship master stateroom layout with a large walk around island berth and ensuite head with separate large shower. Forward is the guest stateroom with double berth to port, custom desk and hanging locker to starboard and forward ensuite head with separate shower. In between the two staterooms is a storage and laundry area.

Accommodations & Layout Entering the salon through the aft sliding door from the cockpit you are welcomed by a large living area that merges the salon aft with the galley forward. Entering the aft sliding door there is a full-length coat closet to starboard and a custom L shaped settee to port. There is a custom freestanding teak table for dining, and it faces a seating area to starboard with two custom teak chairs with Sunbrella upholstery and a built-in cabinet forward that houses a flat screen TV or it can be used for bottle storage. Overhead at centerline there is a stainless steel hand rail the length of the salon for safety. The spacious galley is entered from off centerline with custom corian counters fore and aft creating a great surface space for gourmet meal preparation within easy reach for passing items to the salon table. The galley has a large center sink on the aft counter facing the salon with garbage disposal and undercounter storage and trash compactor. The stove/oven and microwave oven are located on the far port side between the counters. The forward counter has a deep storage cabinet on the port side, several cabinets above, storage drawers and drawer refrigerators (2) and freezers (2) below. The down steps from the salon/galley lead to the master stateroom which features a thwart ship queen berth to port and ensuite head (with large separate shower) to starboard. There is a folding entry door at the base of the stairs, along with a door in the front part of the suite that when both are closed provide complete privacy. Access to the machinery space is provided by a large door with a port window on the aft wall of the master suite. The forward door leads to an alcove where steps from the pilot house descend for direct access to the forward guest suite and the laundry area. The laundry has a separate washer and dryer, along

with storage cabinets. There is a pocket door in the forward part of the alcove that accesses the guest suite and provides it with complete privacy when closed. The guest stateroom occupies the complete forward portion of the downstairs and has a double berth to port, office with custom desk and hanging locker to starboard and ensuite head with separate shower forward. Going up to the pilothouse from the salon there is an upholstered settee with table and a watch berth behind (currently used for storage and books/charts. There is also a custom Todd helm chair (rare on a Nordhavn 46), which provides easy access to all instruments, controls and electronics. The helm chair seat and arms fold up for ample room to pass through the pilothouse. The view from the settee and helm chair is excellent and makes cruising safe and easeful. There are two doors (one to port and one to starboard) that lead to the outside Portuguese bridge. From the Portuguese bridge or from the aft cockpit along the covered side deck to starboard you can go to the foredeck. The foredeck has two deck boxes, windlass, salt and fresh water spigots, double anchor rollers and the optional Freeman hatch opens to the chain locker which has excellent room for storage of lines and fenders. Hanuman has spent many nights peacefully at anchor, firmly held by its large Rocna anchor controlled by a Maxwell 3500 12V windlass. The boat deck and flybridge is accessed from the port side up four steps. The boat deck is where you will find the AB tender mounted to starboard on removable Weaver chalks, boat launch mast with winches at centerline and large deck box to port. There is significant room on the boat deck for lounge chairs and table when the dingy and chalks are removed. From the boat deck you step up 3 steps to the flybridge where forward you will find two Todd helm chairs convenient to all instruments, controls and electronics. Behind the helm chairs is a roomy lounging area with 2 long seats over storage boxes, along with a top load freezer secured on the flybridge deck just forward of the mast. This area is exceptional for entertaining and navigating in close quarters. It is effectively a beautiful Bimini covered outdoor living area that is a favorite with crew and guests.

Engine/Machinery Room

Mechanical And Electrical Equipment

Access to the engine room is through a large molded (Nordhavn 50 door) engine room door with viewing port on the master stateroom aft bulkhead. You can also drop down from the salon from 4 removable panels over the main engine, generator and get-home. Also, there is a small forward hatch in the salon that gives direct access to the fuel manifolds and filters. The engine room is crawl around and you can work your way aft around the main Lugger engine on center. At the aft end of the engine room, the wing engine is to port and the generator to starboard. The port forward corner includes the inverter/chargers, 12V Spectra watermaker, strainers and various pumps. The starboard forward corner has the fuel manifolds, fuel transfer pump and small hatch from the forward salon. On most 46’s this area is dark and feels very cramped. On Hanuman great effort has been taken to brighten the area with new paint and many LED lights. Also, additional insultation has been added in the aft section so that the generator cover could be removed to provide excellent access for servicing and observation. Now it is a joy to work in this space and it is well organized and most of the equipment/machinery has been replaced/rebuilt/renewed over the past 6 years for reliable and efficient performance.

From Bob Senter – Northern Lights/Lugger Service Training Don’t confuse Nordhavns with the average white boat you see for sale. None of the same rules apply. Continuous duty rated engines, for example, are only used on commercial vessels and Nordhavns. That means that they could have an expected life of somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 hours and are designed to be overhauled to new in the hull economically. Virtually, all the components you find in a Nordhavn were the best of the breed at the time the boat was built. The most difficult thing for most buyers to understand is that when you find a high hour boat, it must have been continuously maintained in order to remain in top quality, so you’ve found a jewel. A low hour

boat can appear cosmetically excellent but hide a multitude of hidden issues, most of which are directly connected to seawater or corrosion eating up expensive stuff you can’t see. But you will absolutely pay for it after the purchase, usually one frustrating surprise at a time. You don’t need to worry about high hours on Northern Lights generators or Lugger propulsion engines that get broken in around 5,000 hours. I have seen a few engines killed by negligence or seawater intrusion but none that actually wore out in a Nordhavn. The John Deeres are also good. Finally, all used boats have some cosmetic opportunities both external and internal but it is part of buying a used boat.

Electronics & Navigation – Pilothouse Equipment

Pilothouse The pilothouse on Hanuman is outfitted with a great assortment of cruising navigation and communication gear. There is significant redundancy for dependability, efficiency and safety. The equipment is laid out in an orderly fashion with great visibility from the helm chair or settee. The custom Todd helm chair provides for comfortable operations underway, particularly in heavy seas with easy access to most of the instruments. The pilothouse is fronted by the Portuguese bridge which grants you entry to the foredeck or you can head aft along the port side to reach the boat deck where the ship’s tender is secured. The stainless-steel destroyer wheel is on centerline and the dash area includes controls for the main and wing engines as well as an extensive array of navigation electronics, including installations in the overhead. The visibility through the forward windows provides an excellent view of your cruising waters. To port, the cabinetry houses the ship's electrical breaker panel as well as the generator and wing engine start displays. The aft section has an athwartships settee with a teak table for “behind the scenes” seating and there is a watch berth behind (currently used for storage). There is a wet locker at the starboard end of the settee.
