Kayden graduated from Durango High School and attended Fort Lewis College where he received a Bachelor’s in Business. As a young child, Kayden grew up on his grandparents’ cattle ranch just south of Lemon Dam where he learned the principles of hard work and determination. Kayden quickly inherited the habit of being a contributing member of the Durango community. Kayden has been involved with community organizations such as youth baseball, Durango Area Association of Realtors®, Mercy Health Foundation and many other programs he is passionate about. Kayden’s grandmother, Dolores (Gomez) Barela, at her graduation ceremony from Durango Senior High School in 1956. Kayden’s grandfather, Lalo Barela, graduted the next year.
Kayden’s father, Cole, was a star athlete at Durango High School from 1983-1986. He continued on to play professional baseball for the Houston Astors and the San Diego Padres. Kayden’s mother, Jennifer (Barela) Hyson, was captain of the Durango High School Cheerleading team in 19861987. Kayden’s mother and father, Cole, were Smiley Junior High sweethearts and were later married in June of 1989.
