LONESOME GOOSE HISTORY The house was completely rebuilt in 198990. However, the owners wanted to preserve as much of the original structure as possible. This turned into keeping nothing more than the original four exterior log walls and one interior log wall. There is still the original footprint of the ground floor, as well as the original footprint of the second floor, with new, magnificent dormer windows for each second floor bedroom to take advantage of the view of Lake Vallecito. There is an unparalleled lake and mountain view at the front of the home that can be seen through the wall of windows. Numerous clear skylights make the surrounding forest visible from every room. All ceilings in the home, as well as several interior walls, are constructed of exterior barn wood. One barn, known to be approximately 100 years old, was completely disassembled. From this barn was obtained not only much of the bright exterior barn wood, but also massive 9-inch hand-hewn posts and beams, which were incorporated into the living room, kitchen and master bedroom ceilings. The main front door and most interior doors were handcrafted entirely from barn wood. Much care went into matching pieces of barn wood as to color and thickness.
LONESOME GOOSE HISTORY CONTINUED The house has broad redwood decks that ex tend around the home on three sides, providing leisurely access around the entire home. Wilson Creek flows down the east property line, emptying into Lake Vallecito in front of the house. A skilled mason hand-selected the stones for the chimneys from local river rock and tightly packed them into the internal fireplaces and external chimney structures. Two cedar mantels were handcrafted by a local wood worker as were several cedar benches on the redwood deck. There are two water supplies. Yard water comes from a water-gathering system up the mountain behind the house on Wilson Creek. House water comes from a well drilled on the property itself. The entire lake shore in front of the house is either National Forest or BLM property.
WILDLIFE Canada geese are frequent visitors to the lakefront. Kokanee salmon, Northern Pike, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, and White Bass are in abundant supply in the Lake Vallecito waters, along with the occasional Walleye. Mule deer and elk fill the National Forest around the cabin. Black bear footprints are sometimes spotted. There is an occasional moose. The piercing cry of osprey is often heard. The cabin is at an elevation of 7, 700 feet.
