Coral South: Transforming Mozambique’s economy

A flexible, bespoke approach provided through a full range of services. The offshore industry has experienced mixed fortunes in recent years. On the one hand, offshore energy has been hit hard by a dramatic fall in world oil and gas prices; on the other, renewable energy, notably offshore wind, is enjoying a surge in interest and investment. At the same time, the world is also waking up to the potential of novel technologies such as floating nuclear power generation.

regional offices spans the world, with 8,000 consultants, surveyors and other specialists based globally.

Whichever sector within which you operate, you face a series of important, ongoing challenges. At the top of the list is managing risk – to your assets, people, business, reputation and the environment – and complying with relevant local and international regulations. Then there are the commercial pressures: to minimise costs and downtime, maximise revenue, ensure consistent production and secure the best possible return on investment. Plus, you need to be constantly seeking out the new technologies, thinking and insights that enable you to future-proof your operations and identify and exploit new opportunities.

The assets we work with are often extremely technically challenging, involving suppliers and components from all over the world, and, in the case of energy supply networks, vast scope and multiple locations. This has given us great capability in managing complex projects, and a proven ability to put together teams from across Lloyd’s Register (LR) with exactly the right mix of skills, knowledge and experience to get the job done. Equally, in dynamic situations where you need to move fast, our expertise means we can develop simple, effective solutions that can be deployed quickly at minimum cost.

The Coral South field is being developed by operator Eni and partners in Area Four of the Rovuma Basin, off the coast of Mozambique. The size, quality and position of the field’s resources are set to transform Mozambique’s economy. Coral South, which is just the first phase of development, contains approximately 450 billion cubic metres (16 TCF) of gas. We are providing classification and certification services for the Coral South floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit, which is intended to produce around 3.4 million tonnes of liquified natural gas (LNG) per year. This is the world’s first ultra-deepwater FLNG, operating at a water depth of 2,000m. By contrast, Shell’s giant Prelude unit, which we’ve also classed, operates in a depth of around 250m. We’re contracted to Eni, Technip, JGC, Samsung Heavy Industries and SOFEC for various elements of the project, which is expected to go live in 2022.

This combination of global reach and local presence gives you access to the precise design, engineering, operational and business development support you need, wherever and whenever you need it.

Sea Lion FPSO for Premier Oil We’ve granted approval in principle (AIP) for classification for the front-end engineering and design (FEED) of a new floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel contracted by SBM Offshore to operator Premier Oil PLC and its partner, Rockhopper Exploration PLC. The FPSO represents the start of a phased development of Premier Oil’s discoveries in the South Atlantic. We’ve also worked with SBM Offshore and its project partners to refine the initial concept as part of a ‘value engineering’ exercise, ahead of full project approval. We expect that subsequent developments in the Sea Lion field will require additional FPSOs.

We provide compliance, performance and assurance services for a wide range of offshore assets – fixed, floating, semisubmersible and subsea – as well as associated land-based facilities. We have extensive experience in the conventional and renewable energy sectors, extending right through the supply chain and asset lifecycle. Our network of national and

When you’re planning a floating structure such as an FLNG or FPSO, you need marine knowledge for the hull and process engineering skills for the topsides. You’ll have specialists in each field within your organisation – what you might struggle with is finding people who have expertise in both and who understand how to apply their knowledge in the unique offshore context. This is critical, since the key to success is the integration between the two elements. It’s also one of the many areas in which we can help. We provide the bridge between the two disciplines, marrying our verification and classification experience in an overarching classification plan that treats the asset as a single, unified entity. We’ll work with you at the early concept stage to help ensure effective integration is incorporated into the design from the start. But you don’t have to be dealing with a high-risk, high-value giant in an established location. We can help you expand into areas that are perhaps more difficult to reach, but which provide scope for smaller, faster, less complex projects, such as floating power generation, crane vessels, floating storage regasification units (FSRUs) and small-scale FPSOs.

Case study Husky approves West White Rose Project We’ve been appointed as the certifying authority for Husky Energy Inc.’s West White Rose project - a fixed wellhead platform designed to operate in the harsh environment off the shore of Newfoundland and Labrador. The project consists of a gravity-base structure supporting 21,000-tonne topsides. Constructed from around 72,000 cubic metres of pre-stressed reinforced concrete, it’s effectively ‘iceberg-proof’. The new platform will be tied back to the SeaRose FPSO vessel, and will enable Husky to exploit new reserves discovered to the west of the original development. The platform has received regulatory approval and is expected to produce its first oil in 2022.

Putting your assets on a safe, secure footing.

From traditional lattice jackets to more exotic concretegravity-base or deep-water compliant towers, the global offshore production industry depends on a wide variety of fixed offshore assets. These structures can be found everywhere, from the tropics to the Arctic, and in all conditions, from the relatively benign to the relentlessly brutal. With our experience and technical knowledge covering standalone, bridge-linked, cantilevered, monopod, jack-up, steel, concrete and even wooden structures, we’ll ensure your assets remain compliant and suitable for their intended purpose and design life, wherever you’re operating. One of the most important and complex aspects of any fixed offshore project is the interaction between the structure and the seabed. Our in-house geotechnical experts can perform structural analytics to ensure your chosen

Assurance and compliance for your critical land-based infrastructures. Offshore structures often form a relatively small part of our clients’ projects. In many cases, most of the installation is on land, and we have the skills and experience to help you here as well. We’ve spent decades working right along the energy supply chain, and can provide technical advice and assurance for all types of equipment and infrastructure, from

drilling units and pipelines to storage facilities. We can also help you achieve compliance with local regulations. In some emerging locations, such as Kazakhstan, we’ve actually been asked to help draft them, based on the strength of our experience in the global gas sector.

BP-operated Khazzan natural gas project is a game changer We provided independent verification services to BP for the Khazzan phase one development project in Oman, providing confidence that the safety-critical elements of the project were designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned in line with the performance standards agreed between BP and ourselves. Design review teams in London and Aberdeen, combined with field survey capability in Oman and the many manufacturing and procurement locations servicing the project, worked together to provide a statement of suitability to BP. We established a project office in Muscat to provide the smooth co-ordination of activities going forward.

Once the second phase of the Khazzan development is fully up and running, production is expected to rise to 1.5 bcf/d. In total, approximately 300 wells are expected to be drilled over the estimated lifetime of the Khazzan field. Phases one and two will together develop an estimated 10.5 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas resources.

Khazzan phase one was BP’s largest project start-up in 2017 and was a technically and logistically challenging undertaking, with innovative drilling and well-stimulation techniques being necessary to achieve production from the tight gas reserves at depths of up to 5km. Phase one of the Khazzan development is made up of 200 wells feeding into a two-train central processing facility via an extensive pipeline transportation and gathering infrastructure. Phase one production is expected to plateau at 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day (bcf/d).
