LREI ANNUAL REPORT
2012–2013
LREI Mission Statement
O
ur goal is to educate students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners and to pursue academic excellence and individual achievement, in a context of respect for others and service to the community.
We believe that learning should be active and experiential, with the school providing abundant opportunities for students to excel. We accept students with a range of abilities and talents who can take full advantage of a rich and demanding academic program in which each student is both challenged and supported. We seek to create within the school a community built on understanding and respecting others. Thus, our student body traditionally reflects the racial and cultural diversity of our city, and our curriculum is built on interdisciplinary studies to promote understanding of many cultures. While individual achievement is encouraged and rewarded, our program underscores the value of shared goals, friendship and cooperation in mastering difficult tasks. The progressive ideals that in 1921 gave life and inspiration to the school— academic excellence and creativity, active learning and innovative teaching, respect for the individual and responsibility to the community—continue to guide the school today. — Approved by the Board of Trustees, September 19, 1992 Reaffirmed, 2007

Letter from the Board Chair

Dear LREI Community, As fall begins, I am filled with gratitude for the generosity of our wonderful community. All of you — parents, alumni, trustees, grandparents, alumni parents, faculty, staff, and friends — made the 2012-2013 school year a great one. Your commitment to our mission is clearly demonstrated in the overwhelming success of this past year. An unprecedented number of volunteers gave their time and talent to raise over $1 million in direct contributions to the Annual Fund (a first for LREI!), to put on a fantastic Big Auction that grossed over $350,000 and to run another successful Senior Gift campaign. All of this ensures that LREI can remain a leader among New York City independent schools in providing financial aid to our students, while also offering an innovative curriculum and retaining our remarkable faculty. This has been an incredible year. I want to thank the Board for its help in moving LREI forward with our Strategic Plan and the final stage of our Building for Action Campaign. None of this would be possible without Phil’s leadership, the three principals’ dedication, and the faculty, administration, and staff’s efforts to make LREI the wonderful school it is. Once again, on behalf of all the trustees, thank you for all that you gave to the school this year. Warm regards,
Amy Zimmerman Chair, LREI Board of Trustees

Letter from Director Phil Kassen Dear LREI Community, Thank you, LREI community, thank you. Your generosity to the school, your commitment to our historic mission and our shared confidence in our progressive future is inspiring. The Annual Fund supports essential components of an LREI education. Your gifts allow us to bring children out of the school and into the world to truly learn through experience. Your gifts allow us to support our outstanding faculty and administrators as they continue to plan for LREI’s future and to be models for educators everywhere. Your gifts allow us to attract and enroll a student body that mirrors the diverse city in which we live. Thank you for your generosity and for your active participation in your child’s education. We are so grateful for all you do for the school and for LREI’s students. With deep appreciation,

Senior Gift This year’s Senior Class Gift funds will be used to purchase a new projector and screen for the expanding Charlton Street theatre, new equipment for the high school science labs, as well as adding to the existing fund that helps deserving students with the costs associated with applying to college (test prep courses, college visits and application fees). This year, 76 percent of senior families participated, raising $42,925. A wonderful way to honor the class of 2013! Rhonda Hartley – Co-Chair
