LREI Annual Report 2016-17
LETTER FROM BOARD CHAIR AMY ZIMMERMAN Dear LREI Community, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express my deepest appreciation to you, our parents, grandparents, alumni, trustees, alumni parents, faculty, staff, and friends. Your belief in LREI and your commitment to our progressive program is captured in the unprecedented philanthropic achievements of the 2016-2017 school year. We raised a record $1,485,581 for The Fund for LREI from 900 donors, making this our most successful year in both dollars and number of donors. In March, we held our biennial Big Auction bringing in net proceeds of $315,900. Thanks to our Big Auction committee of 50 parents, who solicited nearly 300 donations and planned an unforgettable evening of fun for the whole community. In addition, this year we piloted a new Alumni Matching Gift Challenge. 114 donors, more than half of them first-time donors, met the challenge and gave $22,218 to their alma mater. I would like to thank Phil for his leadership, the three principals for their tireless dedication, and the faculty, staff, and administration for their excellent work on a daily basis. None of this would be possible without their overwhelming commitment to LREI. Thanks to your continued support, LREI remains a leader among New York City independent schools in providing financial aid to our students, while also offering an innovative curriculum and retaining our extraordinary faculty. Warm regards,
Amy Zimmerman Chair, LREI Board of Trustees

LETTER FROM DIRECTOR PHIL KASSEN Dear LREI Community, Thank you all, for your support and contributions to LREI over the past year. The 2016-2017 school year was a terrific one, filled with challenge, achievement, community, and joy. There is something about being in the buildings each day, buildings filled with hardworking faculty, staff, and students, all focused on better understanding the world and developing the skills and connections that will allow us to do so. This is the promise of progressive education — forward thinking, outward looking, community building, learning that is used for and lasts a lifetime. We so appreciate all of the support that LREI receives throughout the year. We are grateful for all of the time community members give to the school. Our parent and alumni volunteers offer so much and have an incredible impact on life at the school, affecting all areas of the community. Thank you. The Fund for LREI, our annual fundraising effort, provides essential resources for our work with our students and for our teachers’ ongoing development. We are grateful for all the ways The 2016-2017 Fund for LREI supported our work in the past school year and for the investment, both literal and figurative, that it demonstrates our community has in what we do each day. We are inspired by your commitment and will continue to channel this inspiration into our daily work and use it to look ahead, as Elisabeth Irwin did, to imagine our future. With the deepest appreciation,
Phil Kassen
