a word from the
EDITOR
Hey Key Club! As the holiday season approaches and the month of December arrives, you can guess that we'll have a lot of events for you to get involved! I hope everyone is pleased with our shirt designs this year, we’ve seen many of you rocking the yellow lately! With that being said, thank you guys for all the service and the hours you have out in this past month. With all the events and deadlines, it almost seemed like an impossible feat, but not for our club. You guys have been improving each and every month and we are so thankful for it. In fact, Mrs. San Miguel, the officers, and I have decided that when enough funds are raised, we will be taking the club member with the most hours with us to DCON! So much is happening for our club, as we have been gaining more and more recognition despite still being a fairly new club. We couldn’t have done it without your help and your service. Keep striving for better and more importantly, keep serving with your heart. With Love, Gilliana Tawaran

Veteran s Day Breakfast BY: GILLIANA TAWARAN This November, our club hosted a Veteran’s Day Breakfast for the parents of fellow eagles, our very own teachers and school staff. On the morning of November 12th, Key Club members woke up before daylight to arrive at the Lake Ridge library at 6:15 to cook and set up for the exciting event. What better way to honor those who have served our country than to prepare the most important (and delicious, if I say so myself) meal of the day. Key Clubbers began prepping for this wonderful turnout by creating a poster with “Thank You For Your Service! From LR Key Club” in bold letters placed up front in the lobby of our school, to make sure any Veterans who saw it felt the appreciation they deserved.
4
But the appreciation does not stop there—Vice President Christeen Nguyen went on to collect names of Veterans that would be in attendance and wrote them onto large stars that were placed in the main hallway for everyone to see. Key Clubbers then divided and conquered their responsibilities, such as what food to bring, equipment needed, decorations, and spreading the word. All our hardwork payed off when the day finally came. The turnout was amazing! Teachers, staff, and parents alike were brought together that morning to celebrate and honor Veterans Day. Our principal, Dr. Johnson, shared a few words with some of the Veterans and recognized them for their courage and bravery. By the end of the event, everyone was filled with joy—and breakfast. The clean up was quick and efficient so that we were on schedule. Our assistant principal, Mr. Romaguera, recognized our efforts with great thanks and a heartwarming grin. Service that is not from the heart is not service at all. So, fellow Key Clubbers, serve with all your heart. Cause it feels (and tastes) oh so good.delicious, if I say so myself) meal of t

WARMEST WISHES TO ALL BY: ALAN PHAN, DIVISION 39S
The holiday season is coming upon us and following the holidays is the new year! I’m sure all of us has a friend that always says “New year, new me” along with some resolutions that are totally unreasonable to accomplish, but that’s a story for another time. Our club has resolutions planned for the new year as well as events for the holidays that we can actually accomplish! To begin with, since the holiday season is just around the corner, the officers have decided to do Secret Santa gift exchange this year! Kayla, our senior rep, brought this up in one of our bi-weekly officer meetings. She set up a system on a website called “Sneaky Santa” where it gives everyone a random person to buy a gift for. We will exchange gifts at a holiday party that the president and vice president plans to hold later this month. Furthermore, this chilly month has me super hyped for what it has in store. Winter volunteer events are my personal favorite compared to other seasons of the year because these events usually consists of pretty christmas lights, music, and movies! The feeling of service during this time of year gives me a warm feeling that makes up for the thirty two degree weather. After the break, since it’s a new year as well as a new semester our club has decided to weed out those who have been
6
lacking and keep those who have been on track. By weeding out I mean we are going to “kick out” those who have not met our hour requirement for the semester yet. Of course our method of doing this won’t be direct and harsh much like my AP when I forget my ID or lanyard. We’ll have a talk which all of the members who don’t meet the demand and try to understand what happened. I feel that this will be an effective way to keep our members dedicated and active. In conclusion, this upcoming month and year will be a time of giving, service, and order. Our club plans to serve to the best of our ability while at the same time, remembering to enjoy the holidays. I wish everyone to have a joyful and jolly month! It’s the most wonderful time of the year to serve!

Butterfly Garden Clean Up
This month, our club participated in a Butterfly Garden Clean Up where key clubbers visited a butterfly garden and were tasked with gardening work such as cleaning out overgrown weeds and shrubs, planting new flowers and plants, and restoring the area to be the ideal butterfly environment.members woke up before daylight to arrive at the Lake Ridge library at 6:15 to cook and set up for the those who have served our country than to prepare the most important (and delicious, if I say so myself)

Cora Spencer Parents’ Night Out As the holiday season approches, everyone needs time to purchase gifts for their family and friends—even parents. Thats why, this month, key clubbers volunteered at Cora Spencer to allow parents an evening to themselves to shop for Christmas presents and the like. They were tasked with setting up holiday-themed games and crafts, preparing hot cocoa and other snacks, and keeping the kids company all while a Christmas movie played in the background. While parents had a night to relax, high school key clubbers were able to bond with the younger student generation in a night to remember—showing that the holidays can be a blast for people of all ages.e at the Lake Ridge library at 6:15 to cook and set up for the those who have served our country than to prepare the most important (and delicious, if I say so myself)

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR DCON BY: JORDAN DRUMGOOLE, DIVISION 39S
Personally, I don’t go to conventions, but when I do, I’m going to DCON. First time coming into this, I had no clue what this thing even was, what we would do, and overall, the entire point of the whole thing. Well, if you’re anything like me, today will be your last day staring off into space and pondering the meaning of DCON. As you already know, DCON is our District Convention held every year to bring together members of Key Club from the different regions that bind a district together. There, we celebrate achievements of the past year, elect new district officers, attend workshops, and meet other members of Key Club from other schools in our region. The whole point is for us to get a more enhanced experience out of Key Club by getting to meet more fellow members, learning about how we can enhance our club, school, and communities and overall to have a good ol’ time with our new friends! With that being said, I personally have very high hopes for this year’s DCON because all the cool things we can do there and how I can get a more immersive experience out of Key Club.
6
Just for me to expand upon my excitement for this event, I’ll give some reasons that DCON is something we should all get hyped about (And things I’m looking forward to…).
Workshops: The best thing about Key Club workshops is there’s one for just about any topic. Whether you’re searching for new fundraising ideas or need tips about applying for scholarships, there’s going to be something for you. My favorite part about this is that you can not only apply the new skills you learned from the workshop to your personal successes, but to Key Club’s successes as well. New Friends: I know I’ve mentioned this about 100 times in this article, but some of the best friends you’ll make in high school will be Key Club members, and not necessarily ones only from your own school. The best part is that your new friends share the same servant-leadership mindset as you. Big Picture: If you haven’t been to a Key Club event outside of the ones your club hosts, your district convention will be an eye-opening experience. Meeting other area high school students who enjoy community service and support Key Club’s mission is a chance you shouldn’t pass up. It’s hard to explain, but after attending a district convention, you just get it. Like I said in my article last month, being involved in your school and community will definitely enhance your experience, and this really ties into that. Remember, Dive Deep and get involved into whatever you’re a part of, it will pay off in the long haul!
