Blasting spooky music, smells of s’mores wafting through the air, and kids dressed in spooky costumes: it’s the Boo Bash! This year, we had a lot of fun serving our community through hosting games such as football and beanbag toss. It heartwarming to pass out candy to trick-or-treaters! There were a variety of different costumes, like Steve from Minecraft or Mario and Luigi! Thank you to everyone who volunteered, we can’t wait for next year!

Hanna Truong | Mansfield Lake Ridge High School | Division 39 South One day, Danielle Alvarado, our vice president, had proposed that we do a “Splash the Officers” social event as a way to fundraise for the club. At the event, the members would have the opportunity to either pelt an officer with water balloons or to pour buckets of water onto any officer of their choosing. We thought, “It’ll be so much fun! For us and for them”. And so, the preparations began to make this event successful. Two days prior to the event, the Lake Ridge Key Club officers had convened in order to discuss what we needed to bring, where we would keep the supplies, and how we would set up. There was also one major problem we had to address: the weather. It was looking to be an extremely windy, cold week, and that Wednesday was not forecasted to be any different. We hoped the gods would be kind, for we are nothing but humble Key Club officers who do not wish to catch a cold. But all we could do was cross our fingers and pray that the sun would show us its mercy by sharing its warmth on the day of the event. Our prayers were not answered. On October 18th, the gusts of wind were strong enough to lift the snack tables from their place and sweep them away into a tornado containing our hopes and dreams. It was 2:55 PM. The Key Club meeting was going to start in a few minutes, and the plan was to finish setting up by the time the meeting ended. All of the officers- save for Chris, Danielle, and Myla- were bustling about the clearing either establishing the snack table or doing their best to figure out how to use the “cow”. Oh, the “cow”: our greatest foe in our quest to achieve a successful fundraiser. The “cow” was essentially the hose system that we used to fill the buckets and water balloons with water, but it simply would not budge. As our officers ran in and out of the school to search for a wrench, we saw the rest of the Key Club march towards us in the distance. A fellow officer asked for the time. It was 3:18 PM. The meeting had gone by too fast, and we were not prepared. It seemed even time was on the opposing side. We ran. We hustled. We rushed. The members of the Key Club stood a few yards away, watching. Waiting. Just as they began to grow impatient, it was 3:27 PM, and we finished the preparations. Slowly, the members huddled towards us and the event began.

It was not nearly as mortifying as I thought it would be. As my brother and his friend creeped toward me with a gallon bucket full of icy water, I was sure I would perish from pure shock. But I didn’t. I simply looked like a rat who had freshly climbed out of the sewers. Beside me, my fellow officers were also drenched in water, and they, too, trembled in the same way a peasant child who had recently contracted the plague would tremble. It was comforting in a way. Though I may have suffered from slight hypothermia, it made me feel better knowing that the members had fun. In the end, our efforts were not in vain. It was indeed a successful fundraiser; not only that, it was a successful social and bonding experience for those present. I suppose this event simply demonstrates the lengths that us Key Club officers are willing to go to for the sake of bettering the members’ experience in our club.

UPLIFT THROUGH EDUCATION Learn t-oday & Build the Leaders of t-omorrow

THE PROJECT: Education is the key element we see in our daily lives; it stems from a variety of topics towards the betterment of one another, and in long term growth, to the actions of individuals. Education is important in the success and continuity of the foundations of Key Club and how we grow as one: through knowledge, sharing our passion, and encouraging others. It provides unity, and it ultimately symbolizes the development for our future. The Governor's Project, Uplift through Education, strives to build the servant leaders of our District to give back to individuals in underprivileged communities through a multitude of community-driven events that focus on the empowerment and importance of education, research, and financial literacy. In addition, this project is intended to highlight that our district, as one, is unified as a team to help people from around the world who do not have access to similar resources and lesson plans to utilize in schools, universities, and beyond. As we rise together, we can uplift the many students, peers, and adults around us. It starts with education - through increasing the culture, teachings, and knowledge - from one person to another. WHY? According to a report studied by the United Nations, over 35% of children and adolescents around the world do not have access to educational resources. Compounding these inequities has created a digital divide which continues to grow, and individuals can face considerable barriers in the future without equal access - over two thirds of the percentage studied faces inaccessible technology usage within their home as well. The importance of uplifting others through education is to provide them with the opportunity to gain experiences and carry on the knowledge they obtain for their future endeavors. Many individuals around the world do not have access to di erent school-based resources because of di ering circumstances. SERVICE IDEAS: Educational workshop program (In-person and Zoom) New topics will be provided monthly ranging from mathematics to literature Write and deliver words of kindness and encouragement to students, teachers, and advisors Tutoring sessions with students
