36 | VOLUNTEERING WITHOUT BOUNDARIES

While the summer progressed, it was important to keep on continuing our service even as the heat rose and our availability diminished. Making sure someone was present at every Feed the Kids meeting as often as possible was important for our Key Club, so I often tried to contribute and volunteer at Feed the Kids Current Webmaster whenever possible. Feed the Kids is a summer volunteering program hosted by Common Ground Mansfield that aims to provide children food during the summer in order to keep them healthy enough to return to school for the next school year.

While volunteering at Feed the Kids, it was incredible seeing all of the distribution of food and how many bags full of food we could create In the morning shift, the focus is on bringing in the bulk packages from pallets unloaded from food banks Different items need different quantities of food while also coming in boxes of different values. 15+ volunteers in the morning typically end their shifts drenched in sweat due to the amount of labor performed in 90 100+ degree weather. As our shift concluded, I looked around to see the distribution of people that generously donated their time for a good cause. As I looked around, I found a group of people that was diverse in gender, race, and religion yet all were able to work together for a common goal. At the evening shift, attendance frequents 30+ attendees and has an even wider range of diversity as high school students typically also join in for the evening shift. In the evening shift, a multitude of roles could be played such as walking through the line and filling up bags, tying all 700-900+ bags based on the day, restocking each station, and picking up cardboard trash from the ground. Although the heat was even hotter in the evening compared to the morning, we endured through and made the best of the air conditioning, fan, and warm water. Quite quickly, we finished going through all of our bags in about 45 minutes. Talking with friends from other clubs, they managed to gamify the whole ordeal in order to see who could make the most bags before the lines ended Even through the summer and its corresponding heat, volunteers dedicate their time and energy to keep providing incredible services such as Feed the Kids in order to give people their next meal in a time where basic necessities are difficult.

Overall, not only has Key Club made me a better person by pushing me to volunteer and help others more, but I was also able to become more open and confident. I was able to meet so many new people, and even gain a new leadership role as Vice President. I am thrilled to be involved in such a welcoming and life-changing club Due to all this, I am overjoyed to spend two more years volunteering with Key Club! I have wanted to join Key Clu ever since my older sister once spoke of it, but I never intended join my freshmen year The yea had already been strange and overwhelming because of coro and online school, so I planned not join any Key Club due to

Webmaster (2021 2022) &

Current Vice President having to add volunteering to my workload. Not to mention that we were already a month into the school year, but for some miraculous reason, I joined anyway. The start was slow to say the least, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I appreciated the thought of having something to do every other Wednesday at 3:30 PM even if it was short and I was just sitting behind a screen. Thanks to Key Club, I was able to find confidence, something that I have always had trouble with. One day at the end of a typical meeting, there were a few Kahoot games that I chose to join. To be honest, it was the highlight of my week. I have never been the type of person to speak out or easily talk to people, fear of saying the wrong thing or embarrassing myself. I did not have this fear during this time. I genuinely had fun talking to the other members, and was not afraid to turn on my mic to say something For one of the first times in my life, I felt like I belonged somewhere. By being in Key Club, I was able to meet many new people. One of my favorite memories this year so far was the Kiwanis’ Club of Mansfield’s Annual Golf Tournament. During this event, I was able to meet people from other schools and volunteer with them. Additionally, I was able to bond with other people from my own school; people that I would not have spoken to at school normally Not to mention I got to ride in the back of a golf cart for the first time!
