BY OLIVIA WURTZ It is finally the time we have all been waiting for… Christmas! I love the holiday season and the goodness it brings out of everyone. During this time of the year, people tend to be more charitable, kind, and grateful for their many blessings. I am always comforted by the giving hearts of my community and their jolly spirits! I’m especially proud of the Lake Ridge High School Key Club and our efforts to incorporate the holiday cheer through acts of service. Not only have we expressed the spirit of Christmas by continuing to participate in various service opportunities, but also through exciting holiday school events and festive Key Club socials. At the start of the holiday season, Mansfield Independent School District, and many others, participate in Toys for Tots. Because many people aren’t fortunate enough to receive gifts on Christmas, Lake Ridge High School’s organizations gather up brand new toys to donate to those in need to ensure that they have the best holiday experience possible. To promote this event, Lake Ridge hosted a wagon parade to show the amazing number of donations from the students. Our Key Club participated by decorating a red wagon resembling Whoville and placed our donations inside. It was such a heartwarming experience to see the number of toys we received from our members!

Key Club’s participation in Toys for Tots not only expressed our Christmas spirit but so did our festive social. As most of us know, the last week of the fall semester is typically extremely stressful. Students are studying to take their final exams and are preparing for the long-awaited winter break. As a reward for the hard work of our club members during this crazy time, Lake Ridge Key Club officers decided to host a Christmas movie night social over Microsoft Teams. I loved this idea! It was such a clever way to gather the members together, socially-distant, and celebrate the holiday season! The officers played The Santa Clause for everyone to enjoy, as well as the infamous game, Among Us. Our members were finally able to relax from the overwhelming stress of final exams and truly begin to experience some Christmas cheer!

I am extremely grateful for all of the hard work our Key Club members have put into serving others in our community and allowing them to feel the joy of Christmas! Especially with COVID-19, many people have struggled to feel acknowledged and loved, so it is very comforting to watch our members go out and provide for those in need. Lake Ridge High School Key Club has done an outstanding job of incorporating and expressing the holiday spirit! Our acts of service and inclusion in various events have truly made me, and others, more excited about the holidays.

HUMANS OF TEXAS-OKLAHOMA

Ayanna Hill

Key Club: An international volunteer organization that provides students possibilities to expand their understanding of their community through service. Throughout my time in Key Club, I have been given various opportunities to be involved in my community and understand the intricacies of leading others to improve their classrooms and beyond. Key Club is bigger than the simple room it is held in; it is a channel in which youth can be connected to their neighbors at large. By providing me with a platform to not only lead but also provide opportunities for my fellow peers, Key Club has truly been one of the many highlights of my high school career. While I joined Key Club later in my high school experience, I have been able to truly benefit from the guidance of our club sponsor, Kiwanis leader, and even my fellow peers within leadership. They have all given me advice and help when it comes to creating volunteer events or even keeping me aware of important timelines. All of their help has truly helped me become a better leader and student. I am very thankful for all the advice and freedom they have given me especially when it comes to creating and finding service opportunities.

12

I feel as though I have truly been able to see my decisions help my fellow members and as time continues I know that these opportunities to help my members will continue to increase. Researching and creating volunteer events is a major aspect of my position within Key Club, but what I truly believe is the best aspect of the club at large is the impact it makes in the community. As one of the largest volunteer-based organizations in our school, our club provides students with a major outlet for community awareness and events. By being the major outlet we also are able to connect with students from a variety of grades and backgrounds, which creates a very diverse and warm family within our school. We are also able to bring students from outside our club to our events due to the community we have created as members. I have really become amazed at how our club has stuck together through even these trying times and are still able to participate both online and on-site at events. With caring leaders and involved members, I have been able to see the magic of Key Club as an organization and a family. Key Club International is both a volunteerbased organization and a family. With each and every member we grow closer as a group of students and as a family. I can not be more thankful for my time here. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for an organization that will hold a place in my community and in my heart.
