President's Letter Hey Lake Ridge Key Clubbers! Despite this cold weather, spring is just around the corner! That means more spring volunteer events! For example, like the Butterfly Garden Clean Up Day on March 30th with the Mansfield Garden Club. Congratulations to all of our newly elected officers for the year of 2019-2020! I’m confident that next year’s board will excel in leading our club in the coming term. In addition, congrats to Denae Jaksik for getting the most CLUB HOURS so far, which means she will come to DCON with the current and incoming officers! I love seeing the recurring faces and names of those dedicated members at volunteer events and meetings. I’m glad to see an increase in participation in volunteering this semester, so let’s all try to reach for the goal of more participation at club meetings, especially since there might be some prizes at the next couple of meetings!

Forever In Service, Diana Fernandez

LOVE NOT AT FIRST SIGHT BY: ABBY NGUYEN, SENIOR REP ELECT

My experience in Key Club has been somewhat of a journey—a love story, almost. As a freshman, I found myself lost in the grueling routine of academics and band practice. I only managed to find some time to participate in a few events before the school year ended. Admittedly, I was ashamed of this and spent time away from Key Club during my sophomore year. I volunteered through my own events and learned how to balance my schedule at my own pace. I returned to the organization my junior year with an open mind, where I learned to love service again. It was this past year that I learned that service is not only something that you devote time towards, but integrate within your daily life. Key Club has promoted numerous volunteer opportunities each week, and with the many that I’ve taken, I have grown increasingly grateful to be able to leave a positive impact on others around me. I even stopped making excuses for the smaller, 30minute volunteer opportunities like I had freshman year. Volunteering has even become an escape from homework at times— oh, how the tables have turned. I also realized that I wasn’t in this alone, and began to appreciate the aspect of a community in which

this club has created. The best experiences, personally, are the ones that I’ve shared with my closest friends. Even better are the ones where I was able to meet new people. The memories created as we test our diverse abilities is not only for us to keep forever, but to leave with our community as we make a difference. As my last year of high school approaches, I sought a form of service that would allow me to reach out to more people through Key Club. With the courage developed from the past three years of volunteering, I decided to run for Senior Representative for the 2019-2020 school year. Speaking to a large audience felt more comfortable than ever because I felt like I was speaking to my family. I was excited to share what I had in store for next year, such as the opportunity gain insight on possible future career paths by volunteering at hospitals. Fortunately, I was elected and blessed with the chance to lead and inspire others and be accountable for logging senior volunteer hours. I wish to leave the organization in better conditions than before for future members. To sum it all up, the Lake Ridge Key Club will always have resolutions as a new year approaches, because there is still always something we (individually or collectively) can better that will bring this association to its success. One of our core values in this organization is character building, and it will always - no matter what - be one of our core values. Happy New Years, everyone!

A DEEPER MEANING TO KEY CLUB BY: ETHAN VU, JUNIOR REP ELECT

This year’s my second year in Key Club and I can say that it’s been pretty great. Many people always ask me, “What is Key Club?” or “What do you guys even do in that club?” and the answer’s pretty simple, we help people. I started Key Club the beginning of my freshman year and it’s been a pretty great journey. Through it, I’ve met some pretty amazing people. Whether it be the new members that I’ve met or the people I had the wonderful opportunity to help, it’s really uplifting and humbling knowing I got to do so. Throughout the few years I’ve been in Key Club, we’ve had the chance to do some pretty amazing things such as helping struggling kids in other districts like when Hurricane Harvey hit, or making care packages for not as fortunate kids in Europe. Although not all of the volunteering events we’ve completed weren’t so large-scale on the time, it’s the thought that counts and knowing that we’ve made someone else’s life better. It could be small things like helping at Oliver Nature Park or helping during social nights at neighboring schools. It’s still pretty rewarding as you get this feeling of, “Hey! I made someone’s life a little bit better today!” The point I’m trying to get at here is that, no amount is ever too small.

Any time you’re willing to help someone out it is an improvement on you and makes you even better as a person. I didn’t learn this at first but after a few volunteering events, I’ve learned that I became a more selfless and caring person towards those around me. Alongside becoming a better individual, I’ve also got to meet some pretty amazing people. Almost every single time I volunteer, I have the opportunity to meet new people and make new everlasting connections that I’ll cherish forever. Through Key Club, I’ve got to make new friends while helping the community and making it fun instead of making it seem like a chore. It’s never really a chore or burden whenever you’re enjoying yourself while doing so! Even if none of my friends were going to the same event I was going to, it didn’t matter as I made new friends along the way! Through this, I’ve made some new friends and met some pretty incredible people; and for that, I’m thankful to be a member of Key Club International.

a word from the

EDITOR

Hey Key Club! As we work our way through the second semester, we find it increasingly difficult to find the motivation to complete school work and stay involved in extracurriculars--- but don't fear! The officers are working on planning more interactive activities for the club. Speaking of upcoming events... DCON is right around the corner and we are so happy to announce that a club member will be joining us for the first time in LRKC history! And not just any Key Clubber-one that has dedicated most of her hours to events that our club has partnered with! Junior Denae Jaksik will be joining us this year and we are thrilled. Underclassmen will also have this amazing opportunity and we're super excited to kick of 2019 as the first year. All in all, the effort you put in will reward you in the long run. It is amazing to see you guys show up every week to volunteer and it absolutely warms my heart to the core. For some of us, it will be the end of an era, but for others, the journey's just beginning.

With Love, Gilliana Tawaran
