President's Letter Hey Lake Ridge Key Clubbers! School is right around the corner and you know what that means… more volunteer opportunities! With school starting soon, it’ll be easier for our club to get together to serve and hangout! Now to get down to business, I have some very important goals for this school year! First, to get everyone to pass the 50 hour requirement for volunteering set by Key Club International. This is crucial as this is all what our club is all about! Second, more transparency between the members and the board of officers. Personally, I want to let you guys in on decisions made and try to communicate them more effectively. Lastly, as I have said previously, I want to get to know everybody in our club, especially since the volunteering path is always more fun when you have friends along for the ride. I know many of you haven’t yet experienced what having a K-family is like, but that, as president, is what I’m determined to give you. A K-family to support you and share with you the delight that serving brings. With that being said, let’s having a great kick off to the school year by spreading the word of the Key Club mission!

Yours in Service, Diana Fernandez

KEY CLUB'S IMPACT BY: KAYLA MOORE, DIVISION 39S

4

Service is a tremendous part of a person’s viability, that works to benefit the community and better a person as a whole. I never realized how extensive the art of volunteering would become for me, especially when I initially joined Key Club as of only last year. When I had first signed up for the extracurricular, it had only become a potential past time of mine, but I never realized how much my time and effort would soon go into wanting to make my local community a better place, and of equal importance, wanting to make Lake Ridge Key Club a prospering home for many more students just like myself. I had been surrounded by volunteering all my life, but up until recently I had never been interested nor involved with it. Key Club soon became a place of connection and serenity for me. Throughout the last three hundred and sixty-five days of me involved, I have formed relationships with people from all different backgrounds and strengthened the friendships of my other friends with common interests. I have learned the true meaning of helping others, and the internal happiness that forms out of the true outcome of doing activities not because they are necessarily needed from me. But solely because I have the ability and resources to help.

Since joining my local Key Club, my interests in social work and communal service has grown exponentially. With the help of my family, I have begun diverging in my interests of helping others and hope to formulate distant ideas into something solid for the future. Key Club has not only taught me what it is to be helpful, but I have also learned what it means to carry a weight of responsibility, and become a reliable resource for others. I have gained character traits such as diligence and tenacity that won’t leave me once I leave high school, but stay with me for the rest of my life. I would want to lead others into the direction of joining Key Club, because it’s become a home to me that has created lasting memories for me that will stay with me forever. From volunteering with one of my closest friends at Oliver Nature Park last year, to all the bright memories I have experienced at my first DCON, I have become blessed with all these opportunities that I would’ve never had without Key Club. The Lake Ridge Key Club has changed me into someone I see as a better person, and with it I can see myself still continuing to grow more and more into this new year. I have realized there is a great impact that comes from Key Club — an impact that will stay with you forever.

THE POWER OF A SINGLE MEETING BY: ALAN PHAN, DIVISION 39S

The book definition of a Divisional Council Meeting is a meeting conducted by the Lieutenant Governor for the members of his or her division. Members from the all of the respective division gather together to discuss service projects, fundraisers, etc. But it does so much more than that. DCMs teach you more about Key Club and help build relationships with other Key Clubbers; whether it be your first or your hundredth, you get the same experience. This past December, I attended my first ever DCM at Mansfield High School as a Freshman. When I entered the building I was a bit shy as I was meeting new people from different schools. Former Lieutenant Governor, Ethan Arredondo, called the meeting to order and began with an ice breaker. I certainly enjoyed the ice breaker because it helped me be more comfortable with the people around me. I learned that they all were there to serve the same purpose; to help our community. As the DCM went on, we discussed service projects, had a delicious potluck lunch, and played some more fun ice breakers! The service project we discussed was The Thirst Project. That was the first time I learned that it can take just normal everyday people to make a big change with just small tasks. The single most significant activity we did was a pie eating contest held in our Regional Advisor, Mr. Nieman’s science lab. When the pie was handed to me I was already dreading my decision to compete.

There was so much chocolate on the pie it looked like it came straight out of Willy Wonka’s factory. When the contest began I took one bite and could not do it anymore so I decided to just put my face into the pie. Everyone in the room found it hilarious and smashed their faces into the sliced pies as well. In the end, we all took a picture together with our pie faces! In conclusion, my first DCM didn’t only just teach me what Key Club does, it also taught me that Key Club is a family. I’m glad to say my first DCM was an enjoyable one! This has been one of my most fond memories of Key Club so far and I hope to make so many more!

a word from the Hey Key Club!

EDITOR

The entirety of summer 2018 was ultimately a success for our club! Though it was nice to take a step back from school, it's about that time of year to start getting back into the swing of things... but that doesn't mean our service should start slacking! In fact, the upcoming fall school year is going to be filled with tons of volunteering opportunities, recurring and one-time events alike. During the month of July in particular, the other officers and I worked hard to find new events that we could introduce to our club in the next couple of months. That being said, keep a look out for recurring thrift store volunteer events as well as some neat socials in the near future! The beginning of this school year is going to be essential for recruiting new members into the club. We will do our best as officers to make sure that we are providing our club with fun filled events for everyone to enjoy. Of course, if you as a member have any suggestions or concerns, feel free to contact any one of us! Let's make this school year a great one! With Love, Gilliana Tawaran
