President's Letter Hey Lake Ridge Key Clubbers! I’m Diana Fernandez and I’ll be serving as your Key Club President for the 2018-2019 year. If you don’t already know me, then I’ll tell you a bit about myself. I have had the pleasure to be on the Board of Officers as Freshman Representative, Sophomore Representative, Vice President, and now President. My passion for serving our home, school, and community comes deeply rooted in my interest for military/government service as a career. In order for our club to be a success, each Key Clubber must have the drive to volunteer and attend events, as well as set an example to the rest of our community. Each and every one of you have the ability to impact people’s lives and altogether, we can make a difference! It was an honor to be your Vice President this past year and I’m so excited to fulfil the duties of running the club alongside the new Vice President Christeen Nguyen. As this will be my 4th and last year serving on the Board of Officers, I’m ready to see what this new Key Club year has in store for us! Yours in Service, Diana Fernandez

MEET THE BOARD President Hi there, fellow members! I’m Diana Fernandez, your new Key Club President! I love striking up a one on one conversation and I’m always happy to help with anything, Key Club related or not. When I’m not working hard on running our club, you can most likely find me staying fit through yoga and strength workouts or studying for hours at a time. Being surrounded by others who truly love service as much as I do brings me enormous joy and I hope this year will do the same for you guys!
Vice President Hey key clubbers! My name is Christeen Nguyen and I’m your new Vice President! In my free time (if I ever have any) I watch Netflix (currently binge watching gossip girl :-). Exercising is one of my favorite things to do, including yoga, running and figure skating. Service to my school and community is also one of my favorite things to do and that’s why I love Key Club so much! I’m so excited for this new year and I know great things are in store for our club!
Secretary Hello, my name is Beyily Brooks, and I am your 2018-2019 Lake Ridge High School Secretary. I enjoy binge-watching Netflix shows and hanging out with my friends. If you catch me doing neither, I’m most likely volunteering or with the LR Band. I'm excited to spend the upcoming year with you! It’ll be my pleasure and honor serving you!
Treasurer Hello peeps! My name is Thaovy Nguyen and I’ll be serving as your 2018-2019 Key Club treasurer. As for my personal interests, I have a knack for drawing and reading—books or being updated on current issues—I also love watching Korean drama and advocating for educational/artistic rights! I’m often seen as an introvert, but once you get to know me, my bubbly and witty personality will shine through—I’m so grateful to be apart of such a wonderful organization and cannot wait for what this year has in store for us!

Editor Howdy Key Clubbers! This is your 2018-2019 Editor, Gilliana Tawaran. I enjoy playing the guitar, piano, and saxophone, among other instruments. Music has always been a big part of my life, just like my friends and family. I'm interested in the arts, as well as photography. I'm so excited for this upcoming school year and everything that's to come for our club! Let's do something great together!
Senior Representative
Hello Key Club members! I am Kayla Moore, your new senior representative. Although it’ll be my first year with all of you as an officer, I am excited to see what the school year will hold. I love writing and on my free time, or hanging out with friends and being social. So if you ever need anything I’ll always be open to helping and figuring things out with you. I’m going to love spending this next year giving service to others with all of you guys, and I hope we can all have fun!
Junior Representative Hi! My name is Preston Truong and I am the Junior Representative for the LRHS Key Club’s 2018-2019 school year. I am an avid gamer and a very cringy weeaboo who believes that the fictional 2D anime characters in Mystic Messenger are in fact, real people. Other than enjoying watching anime and K-Pop videos, I love volunteering at local food banks and my local monastery. I hope that we have another amazing year of service!
Sophomore Representative Hey! I'm Alan Phan your new Sophomore Representative for the 2018-19 school year. In my free time I enjoy getting easy wins in Fortnite and editing videos. I like volunteering at fun community events and being able to meet new people. I have high hopes for this upcoming year because we have a great board. I know that this year will be the best for our club!
Freshman Representative We don't currently have a freshman representative, but once the 2018-2019 school year starts, our club will elect a rep and we will notify you as soon as we can!

Project Color BY: THAOVY NGUYEN
As an artist, producing artwork after artwork became meaningless as I soon lacked the energy to lay the definitive value and significance behind each piece. A few months ago, I came to the realization that I was beginning to lose sight of my passions; as a result, after chasing a long term goal I had created for myself, I met defeat and greeted failure for the first time. But rather than drowning in disappointment, I acknowledged the non-fulfillment as an opportunity to pull myself together and create something better. I figured that I could potentially rebuild my spirits as a creator by putting fervent energy towards the greater good in society-- service, giving back. Because of this setback, I pushed forward and gathered a couple of my friends to aid my in building the foundation for a local nonprofit-- Project Color. Project Color is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to open the socioeconomic barriers in humanity by allowing young students and children “of all backgrounds with the opportunity to explore their creativity through the arts.” By this, my efforts were raised with the belief that if we were able to support the dreams of youthful artists--substantially easier access to supplies that may have existed beyond their financial (cont.)

circumstances--then we would be able to do our part as artists and humans. I genuinely believe that if we can act as a support system, in some way, for these growing children whose minds constantly seek new perspectives, then they would be able to create a secure environment to obtain solace in times of burdening hardship. So far, with the help of Key Club and NHS members, we were able to donate $150 worth of art supplies to Nathan Adams Elementary in Dallas, Texas. Within a span of two months, we collected a remarkable amount of individual supplies--more than I would have imagined--and that was just the beginning. After creating Project Color, I was able to find light in my small bubble of darkness; I grew to be more accepting and aware. I grew with the genuine joy in helping others--not just for college applications or service hours. I no longer cared about the amount of hours I was stacking up, I only laid emphasis on the growing sense of responsibility I felt when it came to guiding others and finding value in being able to carry someone’s burdens-- or even just lighten them for a small while. Being in Key Club for such a notable time allowed me to open my eyes and acknowledge the meaning of service. Project Color wouldn’t have made such progress without the donations of our Key Club members and their love for volunteering and giving back.

EDITOR
Hey Key Club! My name is Gilliana Tawaran, your editor and fellow key clubber. I can't even begin to express how excited I am for this upcoming year and everything that's to come for our club. We have truly come a long way from where we started, especially since we're such a young club. As an insight into my personal life, I am now a junior at Lake Ridge for the 2018-2019 school year and have been a part of Key Club since my first year of high school, serving as Freshman Representative and Treasurer my Sophomore year. The best part about becoming editor is getting to know what the job entails and learning as I go along. Familiarizing myself with the programs and working cohesively with my fellow officers is teaching me great lessons that I'll likely need in the future. That's why I joined Key Club in the first place, not only to help out in my school and community, but also to learn more about myself as an individual in this whole learning process. I am an advocate for self growth which is why that's what I wish for our club; growth and progression. With a new board of officers and a renewed motivation for the upcoming school year, our Key Club is bound to improve. This wouldn't be possible, however, without the help of key club members just like you. You are a part of such an amazing organization and you help make our community a better place! With this in mind, go forth and serve the community!
With Love, Gilliana
