THE SOUND OF PEOPLE THE SOUND OF PEOPLE
Running.Jumping.Dancing.Talking.Screaming.Giving.Smiling.Thegrowing soundofsplashesfromthedunktank,thecheersasacourageoussouldropped intocrispwatersbeneaththeirfeet,thenostalgicbass-boostedtunesthatcreated anewrhythmformyhearttofollow.Thenaturalmusicoftheworldfilledmyears inawayithadneverdonebefore.
ItwasApril21,andIhadescapedfrommyschooljusttofindmyselfatanother.Iwastherewith manyofmyfriends;ourhandsitchedaswesearchedthepremisesforatasktobeassignedto.This wasmyfirstvolunteerexperiencewithsomanyKeyClubmemberstheretosupportme.Notonly that,Isupposeitwasmyfirstexperienceinteractingwithsomanyunknownmembersinmy community,andamemorableexperienceitwas.
I,alongwithafewofmyfriends,volunteeredtomanagetheconcessionstand.Itwasasimplejob:set upthedisplayofsnacks,helpanypotentialcustomers,anddoourbesttosellsomeCoraSpencer merchandise.Oncetheeventbegan,thecrowdquicklymultiplied.ItfeltasthoughIwasteleporting leftandrighttryingtokeepupwithexhaustedparentsandequallyexcitedchildren.Yetatthesame time,Ifeltsostill.There,armslinkedwithVikkiandTaylorastheKidzBopversionof“PutYour RecordsOn”blastedataboothbehindus,IfeltlikeIbelonged.NeverbeforehadIfeltsoclosetomy community.
AsIlistened,IbegantorealizehowgreatlyImissedthesoundofabsent-mindedjoy,similarto soundsfrommyownchildhood.Ilookedaroundandsawyoungkidsrunningaftereachother,racing tobethefirstatthefacepaintingstation.Inthedistance,Isawthebouncyhousetoppleoverfrom theweightofsomanychildrenjumpinginside,squealingastheystruggledtokeeptheirbalance.
Nexttome,Isawmyfriendsdancing,handinhandwhiletheywaitedforsomeonetocomeuptoour stand.Ifoundmyselftalkingtonewpeople;mostnotably,therewasthisonekidwhohadbeen lingeringnexttoourstandforagoodportionofthebash.IlearnedthathisnamewasAllen,hewould turnelevenyearsoldonthefollowingSaturday,andhereallyenjoyedNaruto.Iheardthescreamsof teacherswhohadvolunteeredtobedunkedinthedunktankwhichmashedwiththesatisfiedyellsof thechildrenwhohadsenttheseveryteacherstotheir“doom”. IsawanothergroupofKeyClubvolunteersgivingkids glowsticksunglassesandbracelets.Isawsmiles. Everywhere.Onparents,children,volunteers,andon me.
Before,Iwasasolovolunteer;Ididn’treallyvolunteer withotherpeopleandtheeventsIchosetypically didn’tinvolveasmuchmovementasthisonedid. However,throughKeyClub,IbelieveI’vefounda newappreciationforcommunity-basedevents.I believemyheartwillneverforgetthesugarrush,the rhythmofthemusic,thebouncingofmysoles.Iwill neverforgetthechirpingcicadasasIwalkedtowards myrideandawayfromaquietingcommunity.Mycommunity.
