The Bears are coming off one of their best seasons in school history, finishing with a 9-3 overall record and capturing their second straight South Atlantic Conference Championship. In addition, Lenoir-Rhyne earned its first playoff berth since 1962 and won its first postseason contest in 50 years with a 21-6 triumph over Fort Valley State. Naturally, it will be difficult to duplicate that kind of success but a deeper look at the team reveals a program on the brink of long-term winning. Lenoir-Rhyne has improved its record for five straight seasons dating back to 2008 and now stockpiles a roster with talented upperclassmen, many of whom are third-, fourth- and fifth-year players who benefited from redshirting. Entering 2013, third-year mentor and two-time SAC Coach-Of-The-Year Mike Houston welcomes back 62 letterwinners including 16 starters so all eyes are on a three-peat for the league crown.

Offense

Lenoir-Rhyne’s flex bone offense reached new heights last year, rushing for a school-record 376.2 yards per game. The Bears finished second in NCAA Division II in rushing offense in 2012 with a lot of the credit going to the offensive line. The unit returns four starters led by senior Parker Murray (Ninety Six, S.C.). Murray, an All-SAC pick last fall, took over center duties last year but is one of the most versatile offensive linemen L-R has had recently with time at all five positions. Lenoir-Rhyne also appears solid at both the left and right tackle positions with senior Zack Bunn (Lucama, N.C.) and sophomore Joe Ray (Atlanta, Ga.). Bunn has started since the middle of his freshman season and earned preseason allleague honors this fall while Ray was one of the top freshmen on the squad last year. At left guard, junior Jim Bayer (Lawrenceville, Ga.) enters his second full year as a starter but Lenoir-Rhyne needs to replace honorable mention All-American and Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner Kaleb Myrick over at right guard.

Junior halfback Jarrod Spears fell just six yards short of 1,000 last season and averaged 13.3 yards per carry en route to all-league first-team honors.

The Bears will look at several players at the position including redshirt freshmen Bryan Veazey (Broxton, Ga.) and Callan Gillison (Alpharetta, Ga.). Sophomore Greyson Wells (West Jefferson, N.C.) did a nice job for the Bears in his first season at one of the wideout spots, finishing with a team-tying 10 catches for 217 yards and a pair of scores. To take pressure off the running game, the coaches hope his production increases this fall in addition to another wide receiver stepping up. L-R will first look to redshirt freshmen Victor Brannan (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Edward Blackburn (Kings Mountain, N.C.). All-SAC honoree Reuben Haynes joined a growing list of L-R quarterbacks that have kept the Bears’ offensive engine running but Lenoir-Rhyne will need to find a new player behind center this fall. However, sophomore Teverrius Jones (Washington, Ga.) gained valuable experience last year as he played in several games including two starts.

Jones actually finished with 307 yards rushing and five scores and showed a tremendous amount of potential but finds himself in a battle this preseason with junior Miles Freeman (Sacramento, Calif.). Lenoir-Rhyne will look long and hard and take its time to find the right man at this ever-important offensive position. Whoever is behind center will have plenty of returning players to hand off to as the Bears, more or less, welcome back their entire backfield. The combination of junior halfback Jarrod Spears (Bunnlevel, N.C.), senior halfback Graham Duncan (Gainesville, Ga.) and junior fullback Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.) combined to rush for 2,480 yards to go along with 18 touchdowns last year. Spears, a first-team all-league performer, fell just six yards short of 1,000 for the season but averaged an eye-popping 13.3 yards per carry while Duncan finished with 612 yards on the ground while averaging close to 10 yards per rush. Duncan was a second-team preseason all-conference pick this fall. Whitaker totaled 874 yards on a teamleading 178 carries and was awarded AllAmerican honors for his efforts. Junior Chris Robinson (Newnan, Ga.) is an extremely productive reserve at fullback and provides the team depth and relief for Whitaker.

2013 2007 Preview (cont.) Defense

Lenoir-Rhyne has led the South Atlantic Conference in total defense for three consecutive seasons and the unit could make it four in a row with the number of playmakers returning on this side of the ball. L-R could have one of the best defensive backfields in the nation and most certainly one of the best in school history with the return of all four starters. The Bears finished the year with 20 picks in 2012 and that number could rise this fall. The group is anchored by a pair of first-team All-SAC and all-region safeties: senior Myer Nolan (Atlanta, Ga.) at strong safety and senior Michael Green (Kingsland, Ga.) at free safety. Nolan exploded onto the scene last year and finished with a team-leading six interceptions while Green had another impressive season with 73 tackles and four picks including one returned 100 yards for a score in the Bears’ playoff win. Green has been one of the most talented players Lenoir-Rhyne has had over the last decade and hopes to end his career on a high note. Junior cornerbacks O’neil Blake (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Joe Anderson (Lilburn, Ga.) did not disappoint in their first seasons as starters for the Bears and combined for 129 tackles and four interceptions. Both have all-league potential while senior cornerback Chris Christian (Wadesboro, N.C.) provides depth in a very solid secondary. L-R junior linebackers and twin brothers Tanner Botts (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Tyler Botts (Lawrenceville, Ga.) will man the inside spots as the Bears adjust to life after the graduation of Demetrius Green, a three-time All-SAC and former league defensive player of the year. Tanner Botts came into his own last season and led the team in tackles with 113 en route to first-team all-league accolades and honorable mention preseason AllAmerican honors this fall. Seniors Zach Long (Advance, N.C.) and Doug Ellis (Powder Springs, Ga.) look to battle for one of the outside linebacker positions while the other spot will be a competition between several young players including sophomores Placid Ajoku (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Lendre Sparrow (Green Cove Springs, Fla.).

Probable Starting Lineup

Junior linebacker Tanner Botts led L-R in tackles last year (113) and was named an NCAA Division II Preseason All-American this summer.

Long and Ellis are two of the most experienced players on the squad as both have seen plenty of action over the last several years so linebacker should continue to be a strong point for the Bears in 2013. L-R looks to reload at defensive line with the loss of a pair of three-year starters in Jason Arenillas and Brandon Martin but do return talented senior defensive end B.J. Woodley (Charlotte, N.C.). Woodley has a chance for a comingout party this fall. Last season, Woodley finished with 37 tackles and four quarterback sacks and earned preseason All-SAC accolades this fall. Junior Blake Baker (Bethlehem, N.C.) and senior Jimmy Long (Gainesville, Va.) look to take over the defensive tackle and nose guard positions, respectively. Both have been in the mix in the defensive line rotation so the Bears shouldn’t miss a beat.

2013 2007 Preview (cont.) Special Teams

Lenoir-Rhyne has quietly developed one of the most effective special teams units in the league and this year shouldn’t be any different with the return of senior kicker Zach Neumann (Mechanicsville, Md.) and return men Michael Green and Jarrod Spears. Neumann, in his first season as a starter with the Bears, broke the school singleseason record for points for a kicker with 84 in 2012 en route to all-league and allregion honors. However, Neumann will be pushed again by junior Justin Powell (Connelly Springs, N.C.). Green has earned All-SAC honors as a punt returner for the past two years while Spears has become a weapon at kickoff return for Lenoir-Rhyne. Last season, Spears returned kicks of 95 and 99 yards and came on strong late in the year. Lenoir-Rhyne needs to replace two-year starter Brad Winters at punter and will first look to Edward Blackburn although a freshman might get a chance.

Schedule

For the first time since 2010, LenoirRhyne will play six home games and look to continue its current 12-game winning streak at Moretz Stadium. L-R opens the season at home against Concord (September 7 at 7:00 p.m.) then travels to Davidson (September 14 at 7:00 p.m.) before rounding out the non-conference portion of its schedule at North Greenville (October 12 at 2:00 p.m.) and at home against first-year program AldersonBroaddus (November 9 at Noon) on Senior Day. In South Atlantic Conference play, Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Wingate (September 21 at 7:00 p.m.), Brevard on Homecoming (October 5 at 2:00 p.m.), Newberry for the annual Bishops’ Trophy (October 19 at 2:00 p.m.) and Carson-Newman (November 2 at 2:00 p.m.). The Bears look to avenge two losses on the road last year to the Eagles, who advanced to the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals while the Bishops’ Trophy is the annual game between the two Lutheran schools in North and South Carolina.

Mike Houston is entering his third year as Lenoir-Rhyne’s Head Football Coach. This past season, Houston led Lenoir-Rhyne to its second straight South Atlantic Conference Championship and first outright league title since 1975. Houston guided the Bears to a 9-3 overall mark (6-1 in league play) and a berth in the postseason for the first time in 50 years. Lenoir-Rhyne also won its first playoff game since 1962 (a 21-6 win over Fort Valley State) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Houston, who is now 16-6 overall as Bear mentor, earned SAC Coach-Of-The-Year honors for the second time in as many seasons with Lenoir-Rhyne. In his first season at the helm in 2011, Houston led L-R to a 7-3 record (6-1 in the South Atlantic Conference) and guided the Bears to their first league championship since 1994. Houston became the 18th Head Football Coach in Lenoir-Rhyne’s history when he was hired on May 9, 2011. Before being elevated to head coach, Houston was the Bears’ Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach for four seasons (2007-10). Under Houston’s leadership, the Bears’ defense had one of their best seasons in recent memory in 2010. Three years ago, Lenoir-Rhyne led the South Atlantic Conference in total defense (276.6 ypg) and finished fourth in NCAA Division II in rushing defense (75.7 ypg). In addition, senior defensive back Marcus Shuford (Newton, N.C.) became the third player in school history to win league defensive player-of-the-year honors. On February 4, 2010, Houston was elevated to Assistant Head Coach. Houston came to Lenoir-Rhyne after spending one year (2006) as the Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Brevard College.

Mike Houston was named the 2011 and 2012 South Atlantic Conference Coach Of The Year.

At Brevard, Houston was part of a staff that re-established football after a 56-year absence. The 2006 Tornado squad won two games while playing a roster comprised of true freshman. Prior to Brevard, Houston served as the Head Coach at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, N.C., from 2001-05. Under Houston, T.C. Roberson went 42-18 (5-4 in the playoffs) and was a two-time TimesNews Area Coach Of The Year (2002 and ’04) Houston was also named an Assistant Coach for the 2005 North Carolina Shrine Bowl staff and helped lead North Carolina to a 28-24 win over South Carolina. Houston’s 2004 T.C. Roberson squad was his best-ever, as the team went through the regular season undefeated and finished 13-1 before losing in the state semifinals. The 2004 team averaged 38 points per game while allowing just nine points per outing as it won its first-ever conference championship in school history. Houston left T.C. Roberson with the highest winning percentage of any coach in school history and helped establish the Rams as one of the top football programs in the state of North Carolina. Houston, who was a 2005 Shrine Bowl Assistant Coach, spent five years as T.C. Roberson’s Defensive Coordinator (1996-2000) before taking over the head job. Houston started his coaching career at Forbush High School in East Bend, N.C., where he served as Falcons’ Defensive Coordinator (1994-95). Houston is a 1994 graduate of Mars Hill College with an undergraduate degree in biology and played the tight end position on the Lions’ football squad. Houston is married to the former Amanda Owen and the couple has two sons, Owen Michael and Reid Wilson.

On May 9, 2011, Mike Houston became the 18th Head Football Coach in Lenoir-Rhyne’s history.

Lenoir-Rhyne put together one of its best seasons in school history this past fall. L-R finished with a 9-3 overall record including a 6-1 mark in South Atlantic Conference play while winning its second straight league championship in 2012. Lenoir-Rhyne finished the year ranked No. 20 in the nation as well. The Bears also earned their first playoff berth since 1962 and won their first postseason contest in 50 years with a 21-6 triumph over Fort Valley State in the First Round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Lenoir-Rhyne’s season came to an end with a 38-35 setback to Carson-Newman in the second round of the playoffs in Jefferson City, Tenn.

All-Americans

Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore fullback Isaiah Whitaker (Salisbury, N.C.) earned NCAA Division II All-American honors by Don Hansen in 2012. Whitaker finished second on the team in rushing last year with 874 yards to go along with five scores on a team-leading 178 carries. Whitaker is the second L-R fullback in the past three seasons to garner All-American accolades (Le’Quan McCorkle in 2010). In addition, senior guard Kaleb Myrick (Loganville, Ga.) was an honorable mention AllAmerican in 2012. Myrick also won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, given annually to the top offensive lineman in the South Atlantic Conference. The award was given to an L-R player for the third straight season (Chandler Rearden in 2010 and 2011).

Rushing Prowess Continues

Lenoir-Rhyne finished second in the nation in rushing last season, averaging a school-record 376.2 yards per game. L-R was second only to Carson-Newman in NCAA Division II. The Bears rushed for over 500 yards in two games last fall and were especially effective in league contests (406.4 ypg).

Scoring Machine

L-R averaged 35.2 points per game last season, its highest total since 1994 (37.0 ppg) and topped 40 points a game five times. In addition, the Bears scored at least 20 points in every game and have not been shut out since the last contest of 2007 (a string of 55 consecutive games).

Home, Sweet Home

Lenoir-Rhyne has won 12 straight home games, dating back to a 24-20 setback on Homecoming to Mars Hill on October 9, 2010. This year, L-R has a chance of matching the consecutive record home win streak of 14 games from 1958 to 1961.
