We are pleased to report that LS3P’s 56th year was successful, productive, and rewarding! 2019 was a year of continued political upheaval and came with many global challenges, but it also brought us exciting opportunities to be leaders in our profession. Our focus for 2019 was on continuous evolution as we worked to create a new 2020-2025 Strategic Plan. Our leadership structure shifted, we announced exciting changes, and we launched initiatives that will propel us into the future. We introduced Practice Advancement Centers to support our largest markets, expanded our Business Development team, and created an Ignite Knowledge Team focused on innovation and research. In 2019, we defined and refined our vision: In our commitment to the Southeast, we create architecture that enriches community through a culture of design excellence, expertise, innovation, and collaborative engagement. As we look towards a new year and new decade, we enter a new chapter in our firm’s evolution as well. Our vision will continue to serve as a touchstone, and we will continue to be rooted in our common values and our passion for design excellence as we evolve and grow.
In 2019, we continued our formal process of Evolution and charted a course for LS3P’s next chapter. Our Evolution team continued to work with Dave Gilmore of DesignIntelligence to shift from deep introspection about LS3P’s history, strengths, and values towards creating strategies to position us for future opportunities. The first phases of implementation occurred on February 1, 2019 with a series of leadership changes. Katherine Peele was named Chief Practice Officer, focusing on firmwide practice, design expertise, research and development, and market sector growth. George Temple was named Chief Operations Officer, overseeing the firm’s finance, technology, and human resources teams as well as other critical aspects of LS3P’s business. Chris Boney was named Chief Relationships Officer, focusing on firmwide business development while leading LS3P’s business development team. Katie Robinson was named Marketing & Communications Officer, leading LS3P’s firmwide marketing and communications efforts. As Chris Boney transitioned into his new position, Laura Miller was named Wilmington Office Leader, overseeing practice and operations in the Wilmington area. On May 1, in celebration of LS3P’s 56th anniversary, the Board of Directors named Marc Marchant CEO-Elect. Marc Charleston Office Leader and Healthcare Practice Leader; the announcement of his new role marked an exciting new chapter for the firm’s evolution. During our firmwide VTC that day, we also got our first glimpse of the framework for our new strategic plan with the announcement of the new Practice Advancement Centers and other initiatives.

ROOTED IN VISION
Outside of our eight offices, caring for one another and our communities is one of our most important core values. In 2019, we donated over 400 hours to community organizations. Office teams participated in events supporting CANstruction, United Way, Habitat for Humanity, American Cancer Society, Activate Good, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and others. Many of our team members dedicated their time to training our next generation of architects through career days, academic involvement with our architecture schools, or the ACE Mentor program. Still others volunteered with their local Chambers of Commerce, Rebuild Upstate, the Rotary Club, food banks, faith-based organizations, and so many other community organizations. Our fifth annual Earth Day competition raised the bar for our office-led projects related to sustainability. This year’s trophy went to the Myrtle Beach office, who installed a rainwater cistern for a local affordable housing partner. Other projects included landscaping and gardens, greenhouses, hands-on student activities, and park signage benefiting our local communities. We ended the year with a focus on homelessness. LS3P has worked extensively on projects related to homelessness and affordable housing over many decades, and our holiday community engagement events in each office supported local organizations working to alleviate homelessness in each of our cities.

COMMITMENT TO THE SOUTHEAST
03 ARCHITECTURE THAT ENRICHES COMMUNITY
01
DESIGN FIRST
Architecture has the potential to enrich our communities, address critical issues, and serve the most vulnerable among us through excellence in design.
Homelessness reaches every community, and addressing this complex issue requires multifaceted solutions. Homelessness support facilities include emergency shelters, permanent supportive housing, multi-service centers, food banks, job training centers, mental health facilities, and many others. Access to quality affordable housing is also a vital component of economic stability, and is a cornerstone of community efforts to help economically vulnerable people avoid both brief and chronic homelessness. LS3P is committed to working to alleviate homelessness in our communities across the Southeast through our ongoing work with organizations who serve the homeless population.

CULTURE OF DESIGN EXCELLENCE
Practice Advancement Centers Our Practice Advancement Centers offer firmwide resources and support in our four largest areas of practice: Workplace Strategies, Healthcare, K-12 Education, and Higher Education. In 2019 LS3P named Paul Boney as K-12 Practice Leader, and welcomed Willy Schlein as Healthcare Practice Leader. (The Higher Education Practice Advancement Center kicked off in early 2020 with the arrival of Shawn Sowers as Higher Education Practice Leader.) Our Practice Advancement Centers will provide expertise, marketing, and business development resources as we continue to grow and lead in these markets. Knowledge Teams In 2019 we expanded and reinvigorated our Core Competency Boards, rebranding them as Knowledge Teams. These groups comprise employees from each office and lead the firm’s initiatives for design excellence (Alchemy), high performance sustainable design (Integrate), quality and risk management (Advance), and

Business Supports Practice George Temple, our President and Chief Operations Officer, embraces the philosophy that “Business Supports Practice,” and led efforts in 2019 that improved LS3P’s technology, expanded our facilities, and focused on our people. Additions to the Technology team include IT Pro Matthew Scharf, IT Pro Chris Maddox, IT Pro Jon Galloway, architect Ting Wang, and architect Ruth Parr. The Technology team also implemented new Phishing Awareness Training for all team members to improve our network security and support business continuity. (Contact Technology Leader Darrell Puffer for details.) In 2019, the firm completed office renovations in Raleigh to accommodate growth in February, renewed the lease on Savannah’s office space and expanded it in May, and completed a major move to a new Greenville office in October with a Grand Opening celebration on December 5th to coincide with the office’s 50th anniversary. Through internal initiatives and strategic hires, our team continues to increase inter-office collaboration on projects and improve overall utilization of firmwide resources. Our Data Managers, with the leadership of Katie Robinson and Melissa Strickland, continue to be successful in collecting and documenting key data and metrics on projects, a task which is invaluable in our Knowledge Management efforts. Our Insight Group established a new Accounts Receivable Management system to help streamline workflows for financial function. (Contact Chief Financial Officer Doug Snyder for details.) In December, we completed a 10-year plan to eliminate off-site archive storage at Vital Records Control in Charleston. This process, which was spearheaded by John Works, included retrieving archives, reviewing files, scanning key drawings and documents, and disposing of records accordingly. In addition to eliminating several hundred cubic feet of paper archives and eliminating the considerable costs of offsite storage, this process has streamlined the electronic retrieval of key project information for 50+ years of projects in CHS.

From time to time, our LS3P team members encounter and explore opportunities outside the firm. Not infrequently, these folks find their way back to LS3P and become what we fondly refer to as “boomerang employees.” We are always proud to welcome them back into the fold and are strengthened by their diverse perspectives and renewed sense of purpose. Our boomerang employees from 2015-2020 are shown above. We’re glad to have them back! We love that we have offices in eight charming Southeastern cities. We had 10 inter-office transfers who made a move in 2019.

SPECIAL TRIBUTE
Frank Edward Lucas, FAIA 1934 - 2019
There are few times in our lives when we feel as though we are in the presence of a truly great and special person. Even more rare is when we are blessed to have such a person as a dear friend. Frank Lucas was that great and special person, and that dear friend, and he is dearly missed. Frank founded LS3P in 1963 as a one-man firm. His first office had one room with an old door for a drafting table, and his first jobs included a screened porch addition, a fire station, and a can wash for the local high school. It wasn’t long before Frank’s talents became evident to a wider audience, though; he and his new partner Sydney Stubbs won an important civic project to design Charleston’s Gaillard Auditorium, despite the unexpected challenge of working through the night to meet the deadline while standing in ankle-deep water during a storm which flooded the office. Frank’s firm continued to evolve over the years, growing from one office to eight, but his integrity and values have guided us at every step. Over our fifty-year friendship, Frank was my mentor, partner, and dear friend, like a brother and father, all rolled into one. He was a man with a great sense of humor, always quick with a witty saying accompanied by contagious laughter, with a big smile that could open doors and hearts. Frank was a talented artist and admirer of all beauty in the world. He always had a sketchbook close by and his manner of sketching reflected the man- soft, deliberate, thoughtful… and full of light. He was in every respect an incredibly gifted architect with a talent for design, construction, and business; he was also an extremely generous man, always giving of his time, his talent, and his treasures. Our firm has changed dramatically over the course of our 56+ year history, as has the profession of architecture and the world around us. The foundation Frank built, however, is solid and timeless, and his legacy continues to thrive. Cheers to our founder and friend Frank Lucas! May we continue to honor and celebrate his memory as we strive to live up to his values each day.

Our Values The significance of our values, vision, and mission extends far beyond the words. Unified language is important. However, even more valuable is our shared understanding of the tenets which are critical to our collective success. These foundational ideals define who we are, what we do, and how we do it. Each LS3P team member is a critical representative of our firm, and each is empowered to implement our vision, values, and mission, each day. EXCELLENCE is a beginning point INTEGRITY is at the core of our decision making and actions EMPOWERMENT with accountability makes better decisions COLLABORATION leverages the best in everyone BALANCE gives us fuel to do our best STEWARDSHIP ensures a future CARING for each other is what holds us together

LIVING OUR VISION
Sunrise at the MUSC R. Keith Summey Medical Pavilion in North Charleston, SC.
2020 promises to be a productive, exciting year filled with energizing work to do! We begin the year with a new phase of our evolution, with CEO Marc Marchant assuming the full leadership responsibilities of this role in February 2020 and Thom Penney continuing as Chair of LS3P’s Board of Directors. We move forward with a renewed commitment to our vision: In our commitment to the Southeast, we create architecture that enriches community through a culture of design excellence, expertise, innovation, and collaborative engagement. We each bear the responsibility of strengthening that vision through our own efforts in every role, and we are empowered to make this vision a reality through our decisions and actions each day. The world has never needed our talents more. We have the unique skills and perspective to generate positive outcomes for our firm, our clients, our communities, our profession, and for the challenges we face as global citizens. When faced with problems to solve, even daunting ones, we are called upon to serve as leaders and to apply our design thinking to the issues at hand, at every scale. We are well positioned to be innovators in, and advocates for, smart high performance sustainable designs that will need to be at the leading edge of positive global change. As we forge ahead with optimism and energy, we thank each of you for being a critical part of our team. Cheers to a new year, and a new decade of opportunities to come!
