and serves as the architectural bridge between the academic buildings and the residential zone. The buildings, typically 5-story, respond to the significant topography by “stepping down” the site, in both floor levels and building height.

LS3P addressed not only Housing and Dining’s programmatic needs, but also addressed the many other university stakeholders requirements, including those of Facilities Operations, Environmental Health and Safety, Transportation, Office of the University Architect, and others. planning and design of this new residence hall for the South Village sector of the UNC Charlotte campus. This area is undergoing redevelopment to establish a vibrant student community that encompasses a new dining hall and a mix of renovated and new residence halls. This new 6-level residence hall provides the university with 408 beds in suites ranging from 2 to 5 beds. Fully accessible units with roll-in showers are included on each level.

The building also features common areas, a flexible classroom, a staff apartment, and residence hall staff areas. Design elements are consistent with the university’s architectural guidelines regarding signature brick, architectural precast concrete accents, and pitched roofs. The design addresses the site with the building forming a rough crescent at the edge of a steeply sloping site to maintain a natural wooded area on one side with a level grassed quad on the inner side of the curve. A signature glass tower houses a double-height entry lounge and serves as an entry landmark that ties into an existing elevated walkway system. Other entrances allow residents to access the building at multiple floor levels.

modifications to Judson Hall, the core building of the seven-building Lakeside Housing Complex for Furman University. The renovation transformed the main entry lobby and public parlor space on the lake level and provided an enhanced drop-off and entry experience for students, parents, and visitors. The new design provided an updated parlor space to accommodate both large and small gatherings for academic and social functions. New finishes were

installed throughout the seven building complex, and the existing Judson lobby staircase was transformed to allow visual connectivity within the double-height space. New energy-efficient bay windows, upgrades to the bedrooms and bathrooms, and revitalized lounge areas in the residence halls added renewed function to the complex. The project also included the replacement of the main mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, along with new doors and hardware throughout Lakeside Housing.

The 128 bed, twobuilding complex wraps around a landscaped courtyard, opening up to the broader campus while creating a semienclosed ‘common green.’ This central courtyard is activated by a number of active student spaces, including a 3-story covered porch, apartment balconies, a multi-purpose pavilion, seminar rooms, and group study areas that integrate living and learning.

housing in two former hotel buildings to a new freshman and sophomore oriented housing campus complex. LS3P developed a phased implementation plan that allowed for replacement of the existing buildings over a 3 year period without any decrease in available beds. This was done by building one building in an underutilized parking area in Phase I. The first building created enough capacity to allow removal of two existing buildings. In their place, three new buildings were added in Phase 2. This created sufficient capacity to raze the remaining buildings and construct a new 725 space parking deck and four additional housing structures in Phases 3 and 4. The project also includes a 10,000 sf fitness facility and a pool complex. The construction of each phase was carefully planned to start and end on 11-month intervals to coincide with the academic schedule.

The resulting recommendations were to build an additional 1,900 student beds to meet the full demand in the next 10 years. However after considering the University’s financial position and existing housing inventory that needs to be replaced, the recommendation is to build 900 beds of traditional, semi-suite, and suite units, and allow the off-campus market to continue to support the needs of student housing that can’t be accommodated by the University in the near future.
