Director’s Notes This season we present the coming-together of the contrasting characters named within our productions’ titles. The King and Anna are as foreign to each other as the individual desires of our “guys” and “dolls.” Both productions pit title characters in a struggle – with each other and with their own pride and principle – but somewhere along the course of our audience, they reconcile their conflicts, examine themselves, and accept the quirks and flaws of those vibrant beings they know have colored their hearts. Likewise, though they share the honor of being critically acclaimed, Tony-award winning musicals, Guys & Dolls and The King & I couldn’t be more dissimilar. One, a pageantry of regal sophistication and another, a song-and-dance vehicle of cool camp, their characters inhabit realms separated by time, place, culture, and tone. And yet, after rehearsing both on alternating days (an endeavor most cited as proof of my insanity), seem so perfectly natural being presented within the same week, because together, they harmoniously showcase the delightful diversity of talent and type that we are grateful to accept into our ever-expanding fold. We hope audiences enjoy both productions (hey, if we can rehearse both, you can see both!) and appreciate the tremendous possibilities presented when opening eyes (and young hearts) to brand new and colorful worlds.
T
he King & I is more than a play. It is a tradition and a work of precision brilliantly envisioned by one of Theater’s most talented musical teams: Rodgers & Hammerstein. Its subject matter offers more layers of emotion and its iconic ballet entails an exhausting amount of effort to stage. Thankfully, our choreographer, Laura, has performed the show twice (earning her Equity card as a Royal Wife) and she brought a well of admiration and joy to the project, which set us tenderly toward our target to bring it to the floorboards. Her careful hand has graced this production and her exuberance for it spread – creating a new generation of endearing fans in our cast and influencing my direction. Perhaps, though, the most impactful direction was unintended, born from a decision made during our first rehearsal. With very young actors playing most of the King’s children, lags in rehearsal could prove difficult, so I paired these actors with Royal Wives, instructing them to use their “mothers” as resources in downtime. The Wives, who oversee their “children” onstage, began to maternally care for their counterparts over the course of rehearsal – sometimes escorting them to the bathroom, mending to their scrapes, reminding
them to pay attention, resolving simple issues, settling them down when necessary, etc., etc, etc.. A resulting bond was formed quickly, easing our process, but also developing a strong sense of family within the cast. With this hierarchy in place, the actors readily identified with their characters, naturally accepted the dynamics of the action within the play, and understood the ultimate authority of their monarch (and, coincidentally, of their reigning director). Some casts never quite advance to an “ensemble,” but this one has: they have been content to collectively cower to their King; they have relished the necessary reserve they must all affect; and they have savored the strict discipline required by the script (parents may be surprised that they almost eerily enjoyed being obedient!). And they have done so while both embracing an exotic culture and absorbing dramatic material with mature fascination, consideration and the loving exuberance of their choreographer. This is a sophisticated show and these are sophisticated children who – like their characters – stand poised to carry on tradition while treading new ground. And like their King, Scott, Laura and I are proud to present them all to you. Theatrically, Rana Strazza
