Asbestos Awareness for Locksmiths By Tom Collins

Asbestos is the name of a group of naturally occurring mineral fibres widely used in building in Australia until as recently as the 1990s. Asbestos was originally used because of its strength, fire resistance and insulating properties.
Approximately a third of homes in Australia contain asbestos. Why should I worry about asbestos? Asbestos has been proven to cause cancer. Breathing in asbestos fibres is associated with a number of health problems including lung disease, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
Even limited or short-term exposure to asbestos can be dangerous. How would I be exposed to asbestos working as a locksmith? A very common place for locksmiths to find asbestos is in standard fire doors installed throughout residential, commercial and government buildings all around Australia. Asbestos core fire doors often contain loose fill friable asbestos and are the most likely cause of exposure when drilling these doors. How can I identify asbestos fire doors? Currently the only way to confirm whether a material contains asbestos is be tested by a local NATA-accredited laboratory. Common fire door manufacturers who produced asbestos core doors include: Cemac, Fire Control, Fire Rated Systems, Firmagroup, Ford, Gathis Manufacturing, Masterbuilt Industries.
Here are a few tips to help determine if fire doors may contain asbestos: Fire Door Construction Asbestos core doors are often housed in timber laminate. During manufacture of these doors, the tops and bottoms of these doors were not covered in laminate and either loose fill or concrete bonded asbestos sheeting can be seen as an off white or white material. Asbestos Registers & Signs Asbestos registers must be kept up-to-date and stored at all workplaces and are accessible for any worker who has carried out, carries out or intends to carry out, work at the workplace. Compliance Tag (Fire Tag) A compliance tag displays the door's manufacturer, fire rating, relevant standard information and, most importantly the date of installation and date of manufacture. Compliance tags are often located on the hinge side of the door and/or on the door frame itself.
