The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with The Examiner, is pleased to present the 2011 edition of the Lee’s Summit Health Care Directory. Lee's Summit 360° Charting Tomorrow Lee's Summit 360°-Charting Tomorrow, the third strategic plan undertaken by a collaborative group of citizens, is divided into six Key Performance Areas (KPAs).

These KPAs, identified as communitywide priorities, are Education, Economic Development, Health and Human Services, Local Government, Quality of Life, and Transportation. Each KPA has a set of goals and strategic action steps which will plan resources in the city and to service the community now and in the future.

The Health and Human Services KPA will have a Board, identified as the Human Services Advisory Board (HSAB). The HSAB will consist of leaders in the nonprofit community, leaders in the faith community and community volunteers. HSAB will work together in order to ensure that Lee’s Summit is rated one of America’s healthiest cities by using an integrated health and human services network that provides easy access to all citizens whether or not they are insured.

In collaboration with its charitable organizations, the HSAB will work closely with the Health Education Advisory Board (HEAB) to develop the resources to assist in providing access to preventative measures, therapy, education, treatment and support to the entire community including the disadvantaged and most vulnerable. The HSAB will constantly review the needs in Lee’s Summit in order to identify gaps in services. It will work together to create programs and collaborates to meet the needs

of the community. In addition, the Advisory Board will strive to educate the community about existing services in the area in order to better serve the citizens of Lee’s Summit.

Formal appointments to the Board are expected by January 2011.

Diabetes prevention When it comes to the health complications associated with diabetes, most people know about circulation problems that can lead to amputations, eye troubles and kidney disease. Far fewer seem to know that diabetes puts a person at risk for acute coronary syndromes -cardiac events that include chest pain and a heart attack.

Almost 21 million Americans have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. But the association says that there are things people can do to keep from developing diabetes.

Before people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, the kind often caused by being overweight, they almost always have "pre-diabetes," when blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. About 54 million people in the United States have pre-diabetes, a serious medical condition.

Often people can prevent the progression to full-blown diabetes by changing their diet and getting more exercise. They might even be able to return their blood glucose levels to the normal range.

Some medications can delay the development of diabetes, but for many, diet and exercise might work better.

In one study, just 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity, coupled with a 5 percent to 10 percent reduction in body weight, produced a 58 percent reduction in diabetes.

For those with diabetes and aren’t taking insulin, carbohydrate counting is

a skill that can help you plan your diet to manage type 2 diabetes and control your blood sugar. This technique helps you determine the amount of sugar and starch (carbohydrate) in the foods you eat so you can spread carbohydrates throughout the day, preventing high blood sugar after meals. Carbohydrate counting gives you the flexibility to eat what you want and increases your sense of control and confidence in managing your diabetes.

You should consult a certified diabetes educator to help you master carbohydrate counting and planning meals. And always seek advice from your physician.

In order to achieve a healthy lifestyle, it is important to learn strategies to deal with stressors and to understand that quitting tobacco use takes time and practice.

Spirituality: Spirituality means finding personal meaning in your life; it doesn’t mean just following a particular religious dogma. Exploring spirituality may be helpful in managing stress.

What Would Your Loved Ones DO . . . if you are unable to make decisions about your medical care? Would they know how you want to spend the last days of your life, and be able to make difficult decisions about your treatment?

Talking to your family about the way you want to die or spend the last days of life is very personal and important. You have a right to accept and refuse medical treatments, including those that may prolong your life. Thinking about and expressing your wishes now about your end-of-life needs, will spare your loved ones the burden of uncertain decision-making during a difficult time.

One way of formally documenting your wishes is an Advance Directive. You can name a person or persons whom you want to make health care decisions for you when you cannot. This person would be your durable power of attorney for health care decisions. The advance directive will help your doctors and loved ones understand your preferences.

The Advance Directive includes: 1. Health Care Directive which allows you to state your wishes regarding treatment that may prolong your life 2. Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions that allows you to name a person to make health care decisions for you when you are unable to do so.

Living wills differ from Advance Directives.

Living wills apply only when you are terminally ill; Health Care Directives become effective

whenever you lose your ability to make and communicate decisions. An Advance Directive stays in effect until you die unless cancelled.

Requirements to notarize advance directives vary from state-to-state. Missouri advance directives require notarization. Provide copies of your advance directive to your doctor, durable power of attorney for health care decisions, family, friends, and clergy. It is wise to keep copies available, especially when being admitted to the hospital and when traveling.

Remember, the greatest benefit of talking about your wishes and completing your advance directive is the peace of mind that you provide for those who love you.

Selecting a physician Choosing a physician for your family can be a daunting task. Your selection may be governed to a certain degree by your health insurance, but even within those limitations, you will find that you have many choices. Your best strategy is to start looking for a family physician before you need one. Don’t wait until you are in urgent need of an appointment.

WHERE DO I START?

You need to consider a variety of factors before settling upon a physician to care for your health. Here are a few questions you’ll want to ask yourself: • What medical specialty are you looking for? You need to be aware of which specialty is most appropriate for your situation. For example, if you are looking for a family doctor, would you prefer an Internal Medicine physician, a Family Practice Doctor or a Pediatrician?

• Is location important? Do you need an office location that is close to home, close to work or on the way to day care?

• Are office hours important? Do you need an office with evening and/or weekend hours?

• Is experience important to you?

What about familiarity with the latest treatments? Educational background?

• Are you more comfortable being examined by a male or a female physician? Does it matter to you?

• Do you prefer a large practice or one with just one or two physicians?

• What sort of personality are you comfortable with? Do you prefer to be an active participant in your own health care? Do you trust your doctor, and do you feel comfortable with him/her? Do you communicate well with each other when you talk?

Choosing a physician is an important and personal decision with financial implications. Don’t be afraid to interview the physician’s staff and the physician.

The perfect tool to eating right Are you looking for an easy solution to help you eat right and achieve or maintain a healthy weight? One of the best and most simplistic things you can do to improve your health involves using a tool you already use every time you eat - your plate - and how you fill that plate. Using your plate as a guide can help you eat the right foods and the right amount of foods for better health.

Steps for Half-Plate Rule:

• Use a 9-inch (no bigger) dinner plate for a meal.

• Visually divide the plate or bowl in half.

• Fill half of the plate with veggies.

Most of your vegetable intake for the day should consist of those with deep dark color: broccoli, spinach, tomato, sweet potato, etc.

• Fill one-quarter of the plate with lean meat or protein. Dietitian Recommendation: replace more meat with beans or lentils.

• Fill one-quarter of the plate with grains, including whole grains as much as possible. Recommended grains include quinoa, bulgur, and brown rice. When you read the ingredients, that one grain should be the only ingredient listed.

• Add one serving of low-fat milk, yogurt or cheese. Dietitian recommendation: nonanimal sources like almond or hemp milk.

• Fruit! Don’t forget fruit! Fruit is great with breakfast, snacks, meals or dessert. Try freezing fruit and eat like you would candy.

You can even puree frozen fruit and eat like sorbet. The same concept with vegetable color applies for your fruit. Choose those with deep dark color most often.

Automatic external defibrillators for sudden cardiac arrest Approximately 350,000 die from sudden cardiac arrest each year. In the U.S., sudden cardiac death in athletes occurs most predominantly between 1525 years of age during an organized sporting event and at the prime of an athlete’s zealous participation. It can occur without prior warning symptoms and can happen to anyone, anyplace, at anytime. Ninety percent of sudden cardiac arrests occur outside a hospital setting and less than 5 percent will survive. For every 60 seconds that passes without defibrillation, overall survival decreases by 10 percent.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is unlike a heart attack where blood supply to the heart muscle is severely reduced or clogged. SCA is the malfunction of the electrical system of the heart, resulting in abrupt loss of normal heartbeat.

Ventricular fibrillation is the most common life threatening heart rhythm associated with sudden cardiac arrest.

Early electrical defibrillation (shock) is the only effective treatment

for ventricular fibrillation. Portable Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) are designed for non-medical responders to treat ventricular fibrillation outside of a hospital setting. AEDs are a vital component to the “chain of survival”.

An AED is a small lightweight portable device (laptop computer size), which automatically analyzes the heart rhythm when connected to electrodes, instructing the operator through voice prompting whether an electrical shock is needed.

AEDs and associated training belong where large numbers of people gather to work, learn, play and/or worship. They are a vital component to the “chain of survival”.

Call 911, use CPR or chest compressions, defibrillate using an AED and get early advanced cardiac life support within minutes of collapse by trained/certified responders; a critical link to successful resuscitation in most cardiac arrests. Time is of the essence!

She attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., for her undergraduate work. University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry was where she completed her Doctorate in Optometry. She has been with Eyecare Associates since 2000. Dr. Anderson loves patients of all ages but especially enjoys her pediatric patients. She lives on acreage in Belton, Mo. with her husband Ted and teenage daughter Kelsey. Girl Scouts and being a parent volunteer at The Barstow School take up much of her free time.
