The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce has once again received the highest rating, a 5-star accreditation, from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The 5-Star accreditation recognizes the Chamber for sound policies, effective organizational procedures and positive impacts on the community. “Each day, chambers of commerce are working hard to put the American dream within reach of every hardworking business owner,” said Raymond P. Towle, U.S. Chamber vice president of Federation Relations and Institute for Organization Management. “The accreditation designation tells chamber members, as well as the greater business community, this is an organization that has effective programs, sound finances, and is a strong advocate for their interests.” Accreditation is the only national program that recognizes chambers for their effective organizational procedures and community involvement. In order to receive accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs and technology. This extensive selfreview can take 6-9 months to complete. Accreditation, and more specifically, 5-Star accreditation is a rare thing to find. Throughout the United States there are more than 7,000 chambers, with only 125 achieving 5-Star accreditation. “Reaccreditation at the 5-star level is a testament to the Lee’s Summit Chamber’s staff, leadership, volunteers and members, both past and present, whose talent and dedication have made this such a special organization,” said Chamber President Blake Fry. “I would especially like to acknowledge the efforts of the staff here at the Chamber who kept the accreditation process moving forward during transitions in leadership. The application is quite exhaustive and would not have been completed without their commitment.” Chambers may apply for accreditation every five years. Accreditation applications are reviewed by U.S. Chamber staff, an independent accrediting consultant and the U.S. Chamber Accrediting Board.

Lee’s Summit firm nabs prestigious design honor for KU Health The small-but-mighty landscape architecture team of LAND3 Studio was honored March 2 for its design work on the Kansas University Medical Center Health Education Building in Kansas City, Kan. LAND3 Studio and Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company were given a Merit Award by the Prairie Gateway Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in the Design-Built completed-projects category for its work on the KUMC building. Longtime LAND3 Studio landscape architect Brian Roth was elected president of the Prairie Gateway Chapter, assuming his new role in May through November of 2020. Member News & Events continued... Local Business Owners Honored with National Award A three-generation owned family business in Lee’s Summit has received a national award recognizing their service to nonprofit organizations in the community. Home Franchise Concepts (HFC) has presented a Budget Blinds Cares Award to Jim and Debbie Stoddard, owners of Budget Blinds of Lee’s Summit. Budget Blinds of Lee’s Summit was founded by Richard and Gloria Guthrie and their daughter and her husband, Debbie and Jim Stoddard. Their two daughters, Courtney and Taylor, have since joined the business as the third generation of owners. Budget Blinds Cares challenged franchisees to submit an original video in 2018 documenting their service and contributions to their local communities and customers. Out of hundreds of submitted videos, the Stoddards received the Most Creative Award for their video about their involvement with Hope House, which provides local comprehensive domestic violence services including 122 beds at two shelter locations, a 24-hour crisis hotline, individual and group therapy and other prevention, education and support for thousands traumatized by domestic violence every year. With that award, the Stoddards received a $1,000 prize, which they donated to Hope House. Budget Blinds co-owner Courtney Laufketter has taken community partnership with Hope House to another level, organizing the annual 12 Bars of Christmas event to benefit the domestic violence shelter. Just completing its fifth year, Courtney has helped raise more than $58,000 for Hope House and has been recognized by the organization for her tireless support.
