2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Chamber Endorses Question 1 Ballot Initiative – Calls on Members to Vote Yes! At its February 19 meeting, the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution in support of the 2014 No Tax Increase Bond Issue to be voted on during the April 8, 2014 election. Question 1 asks the voters to allow the City to issue general obligation bonds in the amount of $10 million for the purpose of constructing road improvements and acquiring the necessary rights-of-way including improvements to the U.S. Highway 50 and Missouri Route 291 intersection and bridge system. The $16 million interchange redesign and reconstruction project will increase capacity, thereby reducing congestion and allowing pedestrian access. It also provides better traffic flow, reducing accidents and provides greater access to nearly 300 acres of underutilized property encouraging private investment and the creation of jobs. The current bridge is more than 50 years old, and has received a “serious” rating by the Missouri Department of Transportation. The bond funds will be used to leverage the remainder of the funds from MODOT. “Since 2008, the Chamber has advocated for this project, identifying it as a transportation priority,” stated Dr. Carolyn McKnight, 2014 Chair of the Board. “With a YES vote by the citizens of Lee’s Summit, we now have the opportunity to realize this goal, only after completing or securing funding for many other high priority road projects including Todd George Road, Lee’s Summit Road, Tudor Road, Strother Road Interchange and extension.” The Chamber of Commerce has joined together with other community stakeholders in this effort to pass Question 1, including the Lee’s Summit Gateway Business Alliance, Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council and Friends of Lee’s Summit. “This bond issue will have a profound affect on the future of Lee’s Summit and we encourage all residents to make a special effort to get to the polls on April 8 and vote YES!” McKnight added. More information about the M-291/50 Highway project can be found at the City of Lee’s Summit’s website at cityofls.net/elections.
Lee’s Summit Chamber Captures Top Accreditation
The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce has received the highest rating, a 5-star Accreditation, from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The 5-Star Accreditation recognizes the Chamber for sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community. “This past year, the Chamber staff, board, and volunteers spent countless hours completing the Accreditation process,” stated Chair of the Board Carolyn McKnight. “Our task: demonstrate competency in nine core areas ranging from finance to facilities. The result of our hardwork is evident by this impressive rating. But in truth, we should all be extraordinarily proud of this milestone achievement. It was a true team effort, and something certainly worth celebrating.” Accreditation is the only national program that recognizes chambers for their effective organizational procedures and community involvement. In order to receive accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their
operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs, and technology. This extensive selfreview can take 6-9 months to complete. Accreditation, and more specifically, 5-Star Accreditation is a rare thing to find. Throughout the United States there are more than 7,500 chambers; of those, only 81 chambers have 5-Star Accreditation. Chambers may apply for accreditation every five years. Chamber President Nancy Bruns has led the organization through the rankings over the years. “It’s because of the Board of Directors’ willingness to explore new ideas and programs and not accept status quo that we have been able to go from a 3-Star Chamber in 2003 to a 4-Star in 2008 – and now a 5-Star Chamber,” said President Bruns. “This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Chamber staff, all of our volunteers and members. This is truly one of the greatest honors!” page 3

Putting the President to Work! On Wednesday, March 19 Chamber President Nancy Bruns worked at the Whistle Stop Coffee & Mercantile, 227 SE Main Street, alongside owner Candace Jennings. This was the first stop of the new quarterly program called, “Nancy Do MY Job”. This program provided Nancy with an inside look at working on the front line. Below are some thoughts from Nancy.
I think most everyone assumes that everyone else’s job is much easier than their own. Part of the reason the Chamber chose to do this program is for me to get to experience life in someone else’s shoes… and it was a real learning experience! I was surprised at all that goes into the various types of coffees, teas, etc., and it makes me appreciate those who provide this service even more now that I have been in their shoes. It is such a fast paced environment at the Whistle Stop, with lots of different things going on at once. I’m glad I don’t have to stand up all day to do my job….I think I’ll stay where I am for a while longer! Thanks to all our food service providers for doing a stand up job day in and day out to help perk up the days for customers. Stay tuned for an announcement on the next “Nancy Do MY Job”... she could be coming to a lawn near you.
Finally, summer is almost here! Let’s start celebrating now! Countdown to Summer is a fun new event at Paradise Park that helps raise funds for the Lee’s Summit Chamber’s Visitors Council. For only $15, you can pick any three attractions of your choice: Children’s Discovery Play - “Edutainment” Center, Laser Tag Maze, Mini Golf, Go Karts, Rock Wall and/or Foam Factory. In order to receive the discount, tickets must be pre-purchased from the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce by Wednesday, May 14 by 5 p.m. The Visitors Council works to identify and develop Lee’s Summit’s unique features for the purpose of tourism development and marketing. Money raised from this event will be added to the Visitors Council marketing/printing budget.

City Tax Preparation Service Helps Residents The City of Lee’s Summit, in partnership with the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Kansas City, conducted another successful free tax preparation service in February for qualifying Lee’s Summit residents. The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable federal tax credit for low-income individuals and families. Ninety-five federal income tax returns were prepared by volunteer tax preparers at Lee’s Summit City Hall on February 11, 18 and 25. The total amount calculated by our
volunteers for the federal refund was $163.885.00 for the 2013 tax year. During the 2012 tax year, the total federal refund was $139,390.00 for 103 federal returns prepared by volunteer tax preparers. This is the City’s eighth year working in partnership with the Chamber and United Way on this valuable program for the community. A large part of the success of the program in Lee’s Summit is due to the individuals from our community volunteering their time.
