Lee’s Summit Chamber Supports No-Tax Increase Public Safety Bond The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has endorsed and offered their support for the City of Lee’s Summit’s No-Tax Rate Increase Bond issue, which will be on the August 6, 2019 ballot. We believe this bond will provide the necessary upgrades to our emergency services and ensure the Lee’s Summit community is properly prepared to address all public safety concerns.

YES

If passed, the $19,475,000 in bond dollars will provide updates for both police and fire, as well upgrades to City fiber networks, including: • Police Headquarters/Court facility renovations – Recommended upgrades include enhancing facility security and public access, improving customer service to the public through better design, increasing operational efficiency, meeting the needs of a workforce growing in diversity and providing work space that meets modern demands, thereby improving recruitment and retention of staff. • Police in-car video systems and body cameras – Vehicle and body cameras will be upgraded and provided to officers. The camera systems provide transparency for the community and safety for law enforcement. Both also serve as great tools for capturing and documenting evidence of crime. • New Fire Station No. 4 and fire apparatus – This project will replace an existing station that is in need of replacement and will also redistribute fire response apparatus to better serve the current population and provide a much more efficient location to serve the northern area of the City in anticipation of a large amount of future development. • New Fire Station No. 5 – Current Fire Station No. 5 has reached its capacity and can no longer accommodate additional units for further development or population expansion. This Station also does not conform to current standards on accommodations for personnel, technology advances, or health and wellness changes that have occurred for cancer prevention. This project will replace the existing station to better serve the population in south Lee’s Summit. • Network Infrastructure – Project includes new fiber installation, as well as updates to current fiber networks that currently connect critical facilities including the Police Department, City Hall, Animal Control and Public Works. These connections are vital to reliable communications in terms of everyday public safety operations, as well as crisis situations. The Lee’s Summit Chamber supports the bond issues put forth by the City of Lee’s Summit and we encourage the citizens of Lee’s Summit and our business community to show their support for public safety by voting yes on this bond on August 6.

Member News & Events Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation is Rolling out Pop-Up Art with a Twist in the Parks Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation (LSPR) is adding pop up art to some of their parks. However, patrons will only be able to see this art when the trails and sidewalks are wet. The empowerment and inspirational art movement is in partnership with Lee’s Summit CARES and artist Jamie Lyon of InJoy, LLC. Lyon has been a member of LS CARES coalition since January of 2018. Through Lyon’s businesses, I Am Noticed and In Joy Art, she conducts youth workshops and Art projects that promote youth self-esteem building activities. To date, all middle schools, 2 high schools and 3 elementary schools have student-led Empowerment Art murals on their walls. Bridge Space and LSPR were the two community projects LS CARES funded for her creations. LS CARES commissioned Lyon to create six positive messages that will be placed along trails and sidewalks throughout the park system. Rachel Segobia, Director of LS CARES said, “Lee’s Summit CARES is proud to have the opportunity to bring this mental wellness project to our youth, school and community. We believe in youth-led projects that give voice to our students.

These peer-to-peer messages demonstrate the strength and impact that our collaborations have upon a community.” Installation of the messages will be visible in parks throughout the summer and fall months, through an application of a product called Rainworks, an invisible spray that is a superhydrophobic coating. That means it can make surfaces completely repel water. By stenciling the coating onto concrete surfaces, LSPR has been able to create positive messages and art that only appear when it rains or the surface gets wet. Each location placement will be indicated on the Rainworks map, rain.works/where, as well as posted on LSPR’s social media pages. It’s perfect for a rainy-day scavenger hunt. Joe Snook, Administrator of LSPR said, “Partnering with LS CARES to provide a unique cultural arts experience in our parks while sharing positive messages is a great way to reinforce our community of character and have some fun.” LSPR encourages people to follow Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation on social media to find out where the Rainworks pop art will appear next.

Crank Out Hunger on August 17 to Benefit Coldwater Crank Out Hunger bike ride is back for another year on Saturday, August 17. The ride will leave from VW of Lee’s Summit at 7 a.m. with three mileage options–28, 58 and 87 miles. All of the routes will leave at the same time and follow the same route until your mileage option turn off. SAG stops will be available along the route for riders to stop and get water and snacks. The VW lot will also have snacks and water as well as a bike service tent. After the ride there will be a BBQ lunch for all the riders to enjoy. Feel free to invite your family to enjoy the lunch for a small donation. The lunch will begin at 10:30 a.m. with hamburgers, hotdogs, veggie burgers, sides, water and soda. Crank Out Hunger was started to raise funds and awareness for the Coldwater Food Pantry. In 2018, the food pantry fed over 5,800 individuals in the Lee’s Summit area and continues to grow. The funds raised on our ride go directly to funding the food pantry to give food and hope back to the citizens in Lee’s Summit. For more information about the event, visit crankouthunger.com.

Member News & Events continued... Downtown Lee’s Summit Recognized at State Preservation Awards Missouri Main Street Connection Inc. presented downtown revitalization awards on July 25, 2019, recognizing revitalization excellence during the annual Missouri Main Street Conference in St. Louis. The ceremony honored communities, individuals, businesses, and organizations from across the state that have completed exemplary work in downtown revitalization. Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street receives the Creative New Event Award for the Big Bash The evening of the Big Bash, part of the 2018 National Main Street Conference, was a showcase of what makes downtown Lee’s Summit special – the people. Attendees were welcomed as they arrived by volunteers and the Chiefs Rumble Drum Line. They were given a field guide to the downtown that contained a $25 downtown gift card to use at any downtown business. The impact of the event was measured with 626 attendees from 46 states and Canada, a 32.4% increase from the prior year. Attendees spent their $25 gift card in 33 retail shops and 23 bars and restaurants. They spent on average $89 resulting in over $55,000 spent in downtown in four short hours. The event was a great celebration not only for the conference attendees, but for the community in their support of and pride in downtown Lee’s Summit. Best Façade Rehabilitation over $10,000 awarded to Local Foundery The rehab of the building at 307 SW Market perfectly showcases why a building does not have to be over 100 years old to be worthy of preservation. Originally constructed in the early 1960s as a simplistic masonry block fire station garage, the building served as a fire station for nearly 20 years. While many deemed it to have no historic significance, new owners Ben Wine and Dave Eames embraced the midcentury character of the exterior building. The building was restored to house authentic locally made, and found, objects from Kansas City, and of course, Lee’s Summit.
