Chamber Encourages Voters to Make Educated Votes on Aug. 2 Ballot Issues

On Tuesday, Aug. 2, Lee’s Summit voters will be presented with two ballot questions. The first is a question regarding the continuation of the Out-of-State Motor Vehicle Sales Tax. The second question is asking voters to consider extending the quarter-cent parks sales tax for 15 years to fund future capital projects and operations.

Vehicle Sales Tax: Voters will be asked whether or not to discontinue the collection of the city’s sales tax on motor vehicles, trailers, boats and outboard motors purchased from out-of-state dealers. Voting “no” would allow continued collection of existing sales taxes and also would allow licensed Lee’s Summit car dealers to stay competitive with those located out of the state.

More importantly, this does not authorize a new sales tax, simply a continuation.

Lee’s Summit Parks Sales Tax: The Lee’s Summit Chamber is asking the voters to vote “yes” on the extension of the quarter-cent parks sales tax for 15 years to fund future capital projects and operations.

Revenues raised will go towards park development, additional practice space, park improvements, an outdoor adventure park, splash pad, wave pool, ice rink and so much more. The citizens of Lee’s Summit took the first huge step in passing the first sales tax back in 1996 and with your support, can continue to make Lee’s Summit a great place to live, work, play and raise a family by voting for the extension of the Parks sales tax.

Hiring Our Heroes Program Hosting Job Fair and Networking Event on August 18 Hiring Our Heroes, a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, launched in March 2011 as a nationwide initiative to help veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses find meaningful employment opportunities. Working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s vast network of state and local chambers and strategic partners from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, the goal is to create a movement across America in hundreds of communities where veterans and military families return every day.

To date, more than 28,000 veterans and military spouses have obtained jobs through Hiring Our Heroes events. More than 2,000 companies of all sizes have committed to hire 710,000

All veterans and military spouses registered for the event are eligible to receive up to two free tickets to attend the evening’s game between the Kansas City Royals and the Minnesota Twins.

Deadline to Apply for Leadership Lee’s Summit is Aug. 5 Applications are now being accepted for the Leadership Lee’s Summit class of 2017. Applications can be downloaded at LSchamber.com or by contacting Stacy Needels at 816.524.2424. Tuition to attend the program is $595 for Chamber members, or $825 for non-members. Registration fee covers all materials, meals and workshops. Tuition is payable by the individual, the employer or the sponsoring organization.

Completed applications should be returned to the Chamber no later than August 5, 2016 to be considered for the Leadership Lee’s Summit class of 2017.

Leadership Lee’s Summit was developed to assist in motivating the visionary leaders of the area. Since its inception in 1991, the program has graduated more than 500 leaders who have gathered knowledge and skills to become influential in the community.

Approximately 25 participants are selected each year based on personal motivation, an interest to serve Lee’s Summit, potential or existing opportunities for advancement to top leadership positions, willingness to commit time and energy to complete the program and full support of the corporation/organization representing the class participant.

Shop Tax Free Aug. 5-7 in Lee’s Summit Parents of school-aged children in Lee’s Summit take note and get ready to save some green. The Sales Tax Holiday is just around the corner. Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, and running through midnight Sunday, Aug. 7, school apparel, supplies and many electronics will not be subject to city and state sales tax.

This is the ninth year that the City of Lee’s Summit will participate in the Sales Tax Holiday after the City Council overwhelmingly approved their participation in May 2007, thereby waiving the city sales tax on those eligible back-toschool items. This means that items such as articles of clothing, supplies, computers, computer software and the following items will receive the tax break: • • • • • •

Clothing – articles having a taxable value of $100 or less School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase Computer software – taxable value of $350 or less Personal computers – not to exceed $1,500 Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $1,500 Graphing calculators – not to exceed $150

Member Events & News Michelle Uptegrove of LS R-7 Named KC Regional Teacher of the Year Michelle Uptegrove, life skills teacher at Cedar Creek Elementary, was selected as one of six Kansas City Regional Teachers of the Year in July. As a Regional Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Uptegrove will compete for Missouri Teacher of the Year for 2016-17.

The Missouri Teacher of the Year will be announced in August. The state’s winner, as well as all regional winners, will be honored at a ceremony in Jefferson City.

“The pool of nominees was rich with stories of those making a difference in our schools each day,” said Dr. Teresa Tulipana of the University of Missouri-Kansas City who helps coordinate the regional recognition. “Your nomination, however, rose to the top as an individual who carries a passion for teaching, a dedication to the profession and a drive to ensure all students achieve success.”

Mrs. Uptegrove was named Lee’s Summit R-7 School District Teacher of the Year during April at a community reception hosted by the school district and the Lee’s Summit Chamber. An educator for 23 years, she teaches children with special needs at Cedar Creek Elementary.

Mrs. Uptegrove previously taught in the life skills program, worked as a resource teacher for learning disabilities at Prairie View Elementary and worked for three years in the Blue Springs School District.

Nomination forms highlighted Uptegrove’s leadership skills, empathy and advocacy for all children. “Michelle’s passion for diversifying and including all students in the public education system goes above and beyond,” said a coworker. “The pure love she has for these kids is admirable.”

Lee’s Summit Medical Center Appoints Paige Baker, RN, MSN, as Chief Nursing Officer Lee’s Summit Medical Center, part of HCA Midwest Health, has appointed Paige Baker, RN, MSN, as Chief Nursing Officer. Baker, who has served as Research Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer since March 2014, will oversee the nursing leadership functions at the acute-care hospital.

Baker is regarded as a leader with a passion for excellence that places priority on outstanding patient care and development of a collaborative and proactive nursing team. She has more than 20 years of healthcare management and nursing leadership experience with HCA Midwest Health, which includes director of med/tele at Lee’s Summit Medical Center for three years prior to being tapped as CNO of Research Medical Center in 2014.

“Paige will continue our tradition of superior nursing leadership,” says Matt Sogard, FACHE, Lee’s Summit Medical Center Chief Executive Officer. “Her extensive leadership and enthusiasm will ensure the hospital continues to provide high-quality, compassionate care to our patients and their families. As a visionary leader, Paige will work closely with our physicians and nursing staff to advance Lee’s Summit Medical Center’s commitment to the care and improvement of human life.”

Member Events & News continued Powell Gardens Names New Executive Director After conducting a nationwide search, the board of directors of Powell Gardens has selected Tabitha Schmidt to serve as executive director. She will succeed Eric Tschanz who is assuming the role of vice chairman until his retirement in September 2017. Ms. Schmidt will join Powell Gardens on August 8, 2016.

Jeanie Sell Latz, chair of the board, said, “We are so pleased that Tabitha Schmidt will be joining us as the next leader of the Gardens. She has a deep commitment to the community and brings a high level of energy and enthusiasm for collaboration with the other nationally recognized cultural organizations in the metro area.”

Ms. Schmidt recently served as interim executive director of the Museum of Texas Tech University. A Kansas City native, she has also served in various capacities with a number of nonprofits in the Kansas City area including The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City Young Audiences and Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City.

She brings these strong ties with area organizations to Powell Gardens.

“Powell Gardens has been a staple in my family for years,” said Ms. Schmidt. “To be named the new executive director of this incredible Kansas City gem is truly an honor. Working with an amazing team, I envision a top-notch organization moving to a world-class level, opening new gateways to the community through arts, culture, health, wellness and science, and providing an environment with many experiences and activities for every type of visitor.”

Ms. Schmidt succeeds Eric Tschanz who has led the Gardens for 28 years. Under his leadership, Powell Gardens has evolved into an acclaimed botanical garden, which includes the Heartland Harvest Garden—the nation’s largest edible landscape. As vice chairman, Mr. Tschanz will lead the Strengthen Today to Ensure the Future: The Campaign for Powell Gardens. This comprehensive campaign will allow Powell Gardens to grow the organization’s endowment and support capital improvements to the grounds.

Hillcrest’s primary objective is to move clients from homelessness to self-sufficiency within 90 days by addressing the total life situation of homeless families.
