Dr. Blake Fry Begins as Chamber President on August 15 The Lee’s Summit Chamber Board of Directors has announced Dr. Blake Fry as the new president to lead the organization. Fry will succeed Tim Arbeiter, who left the organization on June 15, 2018. Fry currently serves as president of the Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau in Hudson, Wis. The selection process began with the Chamber board of directors appointing a selection task force and facilitator who launched a national search, reviewed resumes and selected their top choices to interview. The task force ultimately selected the best candidate to recommend to the board. On June 20, board members unanimously approved the hiring of Dr. Fry, who begins his duties on August 15. “We were very impressed with Blake’s background of strong leadership roles, as well as his transparency and management skills,” said Rosalie Newkirk, chair of the board. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding in chamber, tourism, economic development, civic engagement and more that will serve as a great foundation to lead our organization forward.” In his role as president in Hudson, Fry was responsible for the coordination of all organizational activities including programs, membership, employment, training and supervision of staff, long range planning, and total fiscal responsibilities. Prior to joining the Hudson Area Chamber, Fry spent 20 years in a variety of administrative capacities in higher education including government and media relations, economic development, emergency preparedness, and student affairs. He is active in numerous professional and civic organizations and is the current board chair of a six-state association of chamber professionals, Mid-America Chamber Executives. “Serving as president of the Lee’s Summit Chamber is at the top of a very short list of opportunities that would lead to my leaving Hudson,” Fry said. “I have heard nothing but positive things about the Chamber and the direction of the city from family and friends that live or own businesses in Lee’s Summit. I could not be more excited about becoming part of a community I have visited and admired for decades.” Fry holds numerous post-secondary degrees including a bachelor’s in political science from Wichita State University, a master’s in education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, an MBA from Avila University, and a doctorate in education from Oklahoma State University. Blake and his wife Michele, a speech pathologist and Independence native, have two children, Abby and Liam.

Chamber Supports Blue Springs School District No-Tax-Increase Bond and Levy Fund Transfer The Lee’s Summit Chamber Board of Directors has endorsed the Blue Springs School District $99 million no-tax-increase bond issue and the no-tax-increase levy, which will be on the August 7 ballot. Board leaders believe this issue will help protect the longstanding legacy of educational excellence in the Blue Springs School District, which encompasses a number of students living in Lee’s Summit. The bond and levy will improve school security and enhance opportunities available to our students. If passed, these bond dollars will provide enhancements across the school district which will include the addition of door access points, reinforced glass throughout the district, upgraded exterior lighting, a new visitor management system, panic buttons, and more surveillance cameras, along with enclosure of the campus of Blue Springs High School and the Library Media Centers. In addition to the security measures, this bond will create a freshman wing at Blue Springs South High School, a new media center and student learning spaces at Blue Springs High School and multipurpose facilities at three elementary buildings. A number of maintenance projects also will be completed including new roofs, asphalt repairs, updated kitchen equipment and new HVAC units. The transfer of funds from debt service to operating levy placed on the ballot will allow the Blue Springs School District to hire and retain quality staff and add staff where needed. These funds will also result in the allocation of technology resources so that all high school students will have a mobile learning device. The bond and levy issue will not increase tax rates for taxpayers because the bonds are paid back over a span of years, resulting in improvements to schools.

The 2018 Missouri General Assembly, fully aware of the desperate situation, passed HB 1460 which will increase the fuel tax by 10 cents over the next four years. Because of the tax increase, voters will cast ballots in November to either pass this measure or not. A number of area chambers encourage your support by becoming educated on the issue and voting this fall.

There is no cost to attend, but space is limited; RSVP required. RSVP to Matt Baird, director of business and governmental relations, at mbaird@lschamber.com. Sponsored by

The Lee’s Summit Chamber supports the bond and levy issues put forth by the Blue Springs School District and we encourage the citizens of Blue Springs and Lee’s Summit, as well as our business community, to show their support for this bond and levy by voting yes on August 7. page 5

Member News & Events Longtime educator, community leader to head Pro Deo Elaine Metcalf, who spent more than 15 years in education with the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, has been named the executive director of Pro Deo Youth Center – a relational organization providing resources, programming and one-on-one support for local, at-risk teens in Lee’s Summit. Metcalf will begin her position August 1. Board President Hope Davis said she and the entire Pro Deo board are thrilled to bring on a director the caliber of Metcalf. “Elaine’s organizational leadership, extensive education background and experience working collaboratively within the community make her well positioned to lead the organization into the future,” Davis said. Prior to coming to Pro Deo, Metcalf spent seven years as the principal of the Summit Technology Academy at the Missouri

Innovation Campus. In that role, she supervised all STA staff, worked one-on-one with students, handled policies and programming and enhanced instructional programming. From 2002-2014, Metcalf was the R-7 Career & Technical Coordinator for the district, handling Perkins and other grant applications and approvals, budgeting and other purchasing duties. Metcalf holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Art from Truman State University, an Education Specialist in School Administration certification from UCM and a Doctorate in Education from William Woods University. “I am excited to lead and grow the mission of Pro Deo by providing a safe and caring environment for our youth,” Metcalf said. “All teens deserve a place where they fit in and can be surrounded by caring adult advocates; Pro Deo is just that place in our community.”

Grab your tickets for Summit Theatre Group’s “Shrek the Musical!” The abundant cast and mesmerizing costumes will showcase perhaps the biggest and boldest show in Summit Theatre Group’s history, “Shrek the Musical!” Directed by Lee’s Summit West theater teacher Brad Rackers, “Shrek the Musical” is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there’s more to the story than meets the eyes (and ears). “Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...” And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand, and his name is Shrek. “Shrek the Musical” runs Aug. 10-11 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 12 at 2:30 p.m. at Lee’s Summit West High School. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors/students and a $44 family pack for four tickets is available. Tickets can be purchased at summittheatre.org or at both Lee’s Summit Hy-Vee Stores.
