Chamber Endorses Question 7 – Constitutional Amendment for a 10 Year 3/4 Cent Transportation Sales and Use Tax The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors endorsed the passage of Question 7 - Constitutional Amendment for 10 Year 3/4 cent Transportation Sales and Use Tax, which will be on the August Election Ballot. If the measure passes, it is estimated to raise $5.6 billion over a ten year period for: • 400 bridge projects • a 6-lane Interstate 70 across Missouri • 3,200 miles of road resurfacing • 29 interchange improvements • 7 upgrades to port facilities • 14 railway projects • 23 airport improvements • 61 bike trail & sidewalk projects Over $50 million in projects are specifically slated for the Lee’s Summit area and include: • improving the South 291/50 highway interchange in conjunction with the City’s $8 million contribution • improving the I-470/Route 50 interchange • improving the Lee’s Summit Airport • purchasing the Rock Island Rail Line corridor from KC to Pleasant Hill with funding contributions “Clearly Missouri’s transportation system has extensive and complex needs and Question 7 is designed to address these needs,” explained Dr. Carolyn McKnight, Chair of the Chamber Board. “A top priority of Question 7 is enhancing safety, especially on I-70. Besides improvements to I-70, Question 7 will stimulate economic development, improve deteriorated roads and bridges and provide alternative transportation systems for all Missourians. Lee’s Summit and its citizens benefit directly if Question 7 passes. For example, we will see improvements in the South 291/50 interchange and the I-470/50 interchange. Because of the improvements we will see locally and across Missouri, the Chamber endorses Question 7.” The Chamber encourages the citizens of Lee’s Summit to visit MoDOT’s website at modot.org/movingforward to learn more about Question 7.
Lee’s Summit and State Sales Tax Holiday is August 1-3 Parents of school-aged children in Lee’s Summit take note and get ready to save some green. The Sales Tax Holiday is just around the corner. Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 1, and running through midnight Sunday, August 3, school apparel, supplies and many electronics will not be subject to city and state sales tax. This is the seventh year that the City of Lee’s Summit will participate in the Sales Tax Holiday after the City Council overwhelmingly approved their participation in May of 2007, thereby waiving the city sales tax on those eligible back-to-school items. This means that items such as articles of clothing, supplies, computers, computer software and computer peripheral devices, and other electronic devices will receive the tax break. For a complete listing of the items that are eligible for the sales tax exemption and the limits on certain items, check out the Missouri Department of Revenue website at http://dor.mo.gov/tax/business/ sales/taxholiday/school/.

Member News & Announcements Lee’s Summit Economic Development Names New President/CEO Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council recently announced that Rick McDowell has been named as the organization’s President and CEO. The announcement was made during the LSEDC’s Annual Meeting. McDowell fills the role vacated by Jim Devine, who retired in May. McDowell comes to the LSEDC from his role of Executive Director at the Liberty Economic Development Corporation, where he has served for the past 2 years. “The Executive Committee engaged in a rigorous search for a new President and were pleased at the caliber of the individuals who expressed an interest and asked for consideration,” said Brad Cox, LSEDC chair of the board. “We are very pleased to have someone with Rick’s background and experience to lead our organization and look forward to putting that experience to work on behalf of Lee’s Summit.” McDowell has more than 35 years of experience in economic development in a career that spans employment with the Missouri Department of Economic Development; the Columbia Regional Economic
Development, Inc.; KPMG, LLP; and PricewaterhouseCoopers, in addition to his tenure with the Liberty EDC. Bob Marcusse, President & CEO of the Kansas City Area Development Council (KCADC), said: “Rick McDowell will be a wonderful President for the LSEDC. I have been privileged to work with Rick for many years and know him to be a leader, a consensus builder, and a great collaborator. Rick McDowell and Lee’s Summit have a bright future together.” McDowell began the transition from Liberty to Lee’s Summit immediately, participating in LSEDC’s Annual Meeting and an economic development strategic planning session between LSEDC and City Council on July 31. He will be on board full time at the LSEDC beginning August 1, 2014.
Office Products Alliance Acquires Basic Business Products Office Products Alliance, the independent office products dealer in the Kansas City area, announced the acquisition of Basic Business Products, located in Kansas City, Kan. the last four years. As a result of OPA’s aggressive growth activities, they are now the largest independent office products supplier in the Kansas City Area. “We offer our partners everything they need to outfit their office from pencils and pens to toner and files, as well as a full floor of furniture,” said Mark Whitlow, OPA president and owner. “We do all these things for our partners and at the same time we do this at very competitive pricing, which helps both companies succeed.

Member News & Announcements City of Lee’s Summit Hires Chief of Police After a national search and extensive interviews with staff and community-wide stakeholders, the City of Lee’s Summit announced the selection of W. Travis Forbes as the new police chief. Forbes will join the City on September 2, 2014 after having served in law enforcement for 22 years for the City of Independence, Mo., most recently as deputy police chief since 2013. “I am excited about the opportunity to work in the growing, future-focused community of Lee’s Summit,” said Forbes. ”The Lee’s Summit Police Department is a high-quality, professional organization that is well respected in the law enforcement community. In regard to hiring Forbes, Lee’s Summit City Manager Stephen Arbo said, “Travis currently serves one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Tamashii Black Belt Academy Shares Lessons with Students in LS R-7 Extended School Year Pogram It may look like simple kicking and punching, but for students in the Lee’s Summit R-7 extended school year program, these moves are anything but simple. Kyoshi Hanson and Andrew Kreicbergs of Tamashii Black Belt Academy challenged the students not only physically, but also mentally by working on focus and attention. “During the karate lesson students gained a tremendous sense of self-confidence,” said Kay Rader, R-7 teacher. In many areas of their lives they are struggling, but during their time with Kyoshi and Andrew they were achieving. When the students learned how to punch or kick, or even duck and jump, the level of achievement and happiness that they got was just amazing.” Kyoshi Hanson provides karate lessons in several of the special-education classrooms in the school district year round, shares self-control and anti-bullying lessons at many schools and leads a Saturday morning adaptive karate classes at her dojo.
