Yours Truly,

2013 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Looking Ahead to 2014... Be the Champion As Chair of the Board, I am deeply honored to serve a vibrant, innovative Chamber of Commerce in a community that values a strong foundation of civic leadership, excellent educational institutions and a diverse business network. As we embark on 2014, I look forward to engaging with you our vision to be the “champion” for the Lee’s Summit business community. Being a champion involves understanding the current challenges facing our Lee’s Summit businesses and creating a portfolio of resources to foster growth. The Chamber board of directors, staff, and the organization’s many committees work tirelessly to promote and provide successful programming, while simultaneously crafting new initiatives to meet your business’s needs in a tough economy. As a Chamber member, I invite you to participate in one of the Chamber’s business and professional development programs, including: “Wake Up to Success,” “Recess for Success,” “Lead Groups,” “Leadership Lee’s Summit” and “Boost Lee’s Summit.” Such programs provide great opportunities to obtain valuable tips and tools to enhance your business and personal life. A champion also spearheads initiatives for advocacy and networking opportunities to expand a web of connections locally and beyond. Please consider one of many committees: Membership, Ambassadors, Governmental Relations, Education, Visitors Council, Young Professionals, Healthcare or Business Development Council, as an opportunity to apply your skills while contributing to a strong Chamber, community and governmental relationships. In addition, networking serves as a vital component for a successful community. The networking events, including Monthly Luncheons, Before and After Hours, and Oktoberfest provide you with opportunities to promote, engage, and meet new members. Most important, you will acquire a network of friends that will last a lifetime. I am grateful and excited about the opportunity to serve as your 2014 Chair of the Board and want to say “thank you” to my family, colleagues and Chamber friends for their support. I also appreciate the dedication from our board, staff, committees and, particularly, your commitment to being champions in making Lee’s Summit a great place to work, live and raise a family.

Yours Truly, Carolyn P. McKnight, Ed.D. 2014 Chair of the Board University of Central Missouri

Package Your Marketing Dollars for 2014 As you plan for the upcoming year, consider the opportunities that the Lee’s Summit Chamber provides you in promoting your business. Chamber partnerships are a unique marketing tool that reaches both Chamber member businesses as well as the local community. With a Chamber partnership your business automatically gains the publicity and brand recognition you need, in a positive and receptive environment. Business and community leaders recognize and appreciate companies that help them gain knowledge and make important contacts.

We offer a limited number of Chamber Partnerships which allows you to combine all or some of our events into one package. We have created a menu from which you can customize your partnership. If you are already planning to participate in some of our events, a partnership package actually saves you money – and gives you great exposure on our weekly e-newsletters, Chamber Link and signage. To review partnership options email nbruns@lschamber.com. All partner levels receive special recognition in the monthly Chamber Link, on the weekly email newsletter, on the webpage and on a special sponsor banner displayed at Chamber events, as well as at the Chamber office. The deadline to sign up for the 2014 Partnership Packages is Friday, December 13, 2013. You can pay in 2013, or request an invoice in 2014 or after the first of the year, depending on your preference. Advertising is just a Piece of the Marketing Pizza Pie On the first night of class, one of my university students asked me a question: what’s the difference between marketing and advertising? In the ad-agency world we toss these terms around a zillion times during the course of our business day. Still, I could definitely appreciate any degree of confusion or uncertainty when it comes to differentiating between those two words: marketing and advertising. Because one of my agency clients was a national pizza chain, they would generously cater a first night of class pizza party. This quickly became a tradition embraced by all, including the university, which saw it for what it truly was, an ice breaker where everyone got to know one another while we reviewed the semester’s syllabus. It should come as no surprise when I tell you how I explained the difference between marketing and advertising to the student, and her classmates that night. I told them to think of marketing as a large pizza pie (work with me here - what college student doesn’t eat pizza at least several times a week? And here we all were, our desks arranged in a circle, devouring pizza). Marketing, like pizza, is made up of individual slices. There is a research slice, strategic planning slice, media planning & buying slice, public relations slice, community involvement slice, website development slice and a creative department slice. The slices (components) must not only work independently within the agency, but it is imperative that they work together. Are you with me so far? All the marketing components working together are how we arrive at formulating the right message. One that will resonate with our target audience and therefore motivate them to take a desired action (shop, dine, buy, visit, etc.). The advertising expression of that message, which includes headline, copy, graphic content and logo treatment, is how we tell our story in a way that differentiates our product or service from our competition. In essence, marketing tells us what to say ,and advertising is the expression of how we say it. Day-in and day-out, people are exposed to thousands of advertising messages in the form of a newspaper or magazine ad, a TV commercial, a radio spot, an outdoor board or interactive / online messaging. Thousands of messages from the time we get up in the morning until we go to sleep at night. Therefore, if your advertising isn’t different, it amounts to marketing suicide. Research helps us stay ahead of the competition by analyzing and interpreting the forces shaping consumer behavior. Research is about understanding what really matters to the common consumer; not what we think should matter to them, or what we’d like for them to care about. Marketing research allows us to

provide an objective voice, providing a much needed outside perspective that you won’t find internally; because, insiders tend to make assumptions that aren’t necessarily relevant when it comes to reflecting the consumer’s needs, wants, desires or evolving mind-set. Why is this so important? Well, to quote advertising pioneer Bill Bernbach, “You can say the right thing about a product and nobody will listen. You’ve got to say it in such a way that people will feel it in their gut. Because if you don’t feel it, nothing will happen.”

They will share space with the building owner. Lifestyle Publications was founded in 2009 with the launch of Leawood Lifestyle. At that time they had three part and full-time employees. Four years later they produce and distribute 15 community-focused magazines around the country including: Lee’s Summit

Acting Police Chief Named for City of Lee’s Summit Lee’s Summit City Manager Stephen Arbo announced that Lee’s Summit Police Department Major Scott Lyons will be appointed as the Acting Police Chief after the January 17, 2014 retirement of Chief Joe Piccinini. “Major Lyons will lead our Police Department well in the interim. He has a strong working knowledge of all primary functions of the Police Department and has shown great leadership skills implementing many important projects and programs,” said City Manager Arbo. Major Lyons helped to spearhead the installation of the new emergency services radio upgrade for Lee’s Summit’s Public Safety personnel, as well as other departments, such as the Public Works and Water

Utilities departments. The radio communications project required a multi-departmental approach, seeking approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), working through numerous “special-use permit” zoning processes, and coordination with the technical communication consultants and contractors. “This was a great test of leadership and ability to work with several different stakeholders on a very complex project,” said City Manager Arbo. Police Chief Piccinini said about this upcoming appointment, “I am confident that Major Lyons will serve the Lee’s Summit community well during the interim period. We have a strong team of majors, captains, and sergeants who will continue providing a safe environment for our citizens under Major Lyons’ proven leadership.” A national search will begin in February 2014 to fill the City’s police chief position permanently.

The Wonderful World of Christmas “The Wonderful World of Christmas”, presented by Monica’s School of Dance, Pinnacle Bank and 99.7 The Point, is set for December 21 and 22. The show stars Santa, as he takes the audience on a magical tour through “Toyland, The Land of Sweets,

and Candy Cane Lane”. Experience the majesty of the Trans-Siberian Ballet. Witness the toys that come to life, the “Polar Express” and “The Parade of the Wooden Soldiers”. Look for appearances from Rudolph, Frosty the Snowman, the dancing Hippopotamus and more than 200 multi-talented singers and dancers.
