Looking Ahead to 2015 I am honored to be the incoming 2015 Lee’s Summit Chamber Chair of the Board. As envisioned by our powerful brand, “Yours Truly”, I am proud to work on behalf of a business community that values partnership, professional development, innovation, loyalty, growth, and character. I hope to model these values and engage the community to fulfill our mission: creating opportunities for business success. Opportunities with the Chamber come in many forms…
• Partnering with the Chamber and supporting the community with sponsorship of events.
• Taking advantage of the professional development programming, Recess for Success, Leads Groups, and Leadership Lee’s Summit.
• Promoting innovation with BOOST Lee’s Summit. • Enhancing loyalty and promoting each others’ business by
attending networking events such as: Monthly Luncheons, Before and After Hours.
The whole is always greater than the sum of the parts! The Chamber’s board of directors, staff, and committees already provide the outstanding foundation. Earning 5-star accreditation in 2014 was a distinguished accomplishment that we should celebrate and leverage for future success. Help us grow the Chamber and its sphere of influence by applying your skills, influence, and resources to fulfilling the purpose of one or more of our many committees: Membership, Ambassadors, Governmental Relations, Education, Visitors Council, Young Professionals, Health Care or Business Development Council. I am excited and humbled with the opportunity to serve as your 2015 Chair and want to say “thank you” to my family, colleagues and Chamber friends for their support. I also appreciate the dedication from our past Chair, board, staff, committees and, particularly, your contributions in making Lee’s Summit a great place to work, live and raise a family.

Committee Highlight Business Development Council Recess for Success
The Business Development Council develops and delivers high quality educational and training programs for Chamber members. Its primary mission is to monitor and fulfill the educational and training needs of small businesses and serve as a resource for Chamber member businesses to succeed. Each year the BDC surveys the membership to identify relevant, timely and interesting topics that are important to the business community. From these surveys the BDC selects the topics for the Recess for Success professional development series held the first Tuesday of each month. During these seminars attendees are introduced to experts in their respective disciplines and are provided the opportunity to ask questions and discuss business issues. The lineup for the 2015 Recess for Success seminars can be found on the Chamber calendar. The BDC is always looking for great presenters who are willing to share their time and knowledge. If you would like to be considered as a presenter or if you would like more information about the Business Development Council contact Mark Dickey at 816.524.2424 or mdickey@lschamber.com.

A New Vision for Economic Development at Lee’s Summit City Hall
The City of Lee’s Summit’s Development Center has been a flurry of activity since opening in January. From Red Development to North Point, all the way to traditional mom and pop shops hoping to open their doors in Lee’s Summit, business leaders and entrepreneurs are finding the new way of doing business at City Hall to be a breath of fresh air. Development Center Director Mark Dunning said once all the people and processes were in place, the new mantra of “Lee’s Summit Means Business” began to take shape quickly. And, not surprisingly, helping people do business started with just that – people. Dunning’s trio of project managers – Chris Hughey, Dawn Bell and Mike Weisenborn – continue to walk dozens of interested businesses down the road of codes, forms, studies and permits. “Putting the project managers at the forefront and marrying them and the applicant before they even go to a meeting, was an early key,” Dunning said. Eliminating the old “us vs. them” stigma of City Hall, Dunning said that fostering a partnership with businesses signaled an immediate change in philosophy. Not only does the project manager 1-on-1 style make for easier access to economic development, but it allows the team to better track business data. Initially, the revamp at City Hall was going to center page 8
around an ombudsman to work with local businesses. However, Dunning and his team took that concept a step further. Those project managers each brought a depth and breadth of knowledge to their new roles. A better business process at City Hall will gain more advocates for doing business in Lee’s Summit, Dunning said. The Development Center’s team is receiving telephone calls, walk-ins and inquiries via email daily about opening a business in Lee’s Summit. Businesses inquiring about setting up shop in Lee’s Summit have ranged from mom-and-pop establishments to larger enterprises whose owners may or may not have considered opening here in the past. In a recent nationwide survey conducted by North Star Destination Strategies, respondents were 12.9 times more likely to advocate Lee’s Summit “As a Place to Conduct Business” compared to 200 other cities in 40 states across the nation. In 2015, the Development Center will continue to fine tune processes and look for ways to ease business license renewals and continue to be a part of the discussion regarding incentives and policies. Those interested in learning more about starting or growing a business in Lee’s Summit can call 816.969.1220 or visit LSmeansbusiness.net.
Member News Our Lady of the Presentation School Named National Blue Ribbon School Our Lady of the Presentation is one of 337 schools selected as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2014. OLP is one of only 50 private schools honored. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and The Department honored OLP and other schools in early November at a recognition ceremony in Washington DC. The National Blue Ribbon Schools program honors elementary, middle and high schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. In its 32-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed this coveted award on just under 7,900 of America’s schools. OLP was named an exemplary high performing school. Exemplary High Performing Schools are among
their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. “These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education – that all students, no matter their name or zip code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments,” Duncan said. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent excellence and a resource for other schools and districts.”
