$100 Million Business-Loan Program Hoping to break a nearly two-year-old standoff between lenders and prospective borrowers, the state of Missouri has joined forces with its largest bank to launch a $100 million business-loan program.

The alliance with Commerce Bank will mean roughly $40 million in lending power in the Kansas City market, said Kevin Barth, regional president for Commerce. The rest of the money will be apportioned in St. Louis and elsewhere in the state.

Commerce will act as lending agent for the low-interest loans issued through the Missouri Linked Deposit Program, which has authorized nearly $400 million in small business owners and agricultural loans since Governor Jay Nixon took office in January 2009.

Members Making Waves Don Kahan Motors Wins First Ethics in Business Award The Lee’s Summit Ethics Committee presented the first Lee’s Summit Ethics in Business Award at the November Chamber luncheon.

This year’s recipient was Don Kahan Motors. Don Kahan is one of Lee’s Summit’s own philanthropists. He is one of the original financial supporters and an active member in the Business Sector of the Community of Character. He funded the publishing and the distribution of the book Character Connections.

Social Services. Geneva High, director of Lee’s Summit Social Services states,“Don is always willing to help. I count on him for the very best advice.

Members of Lee’s Summit CARES, the Chamber, Eastland Community Foundation, Lee’s Summit Rotary, Human Asset Imaging Institute and MCC-Longview formed the Lee’s Summit Ethics Committee. The mission of the committee is to foster a culture of ethical and socially responsible business practices in Lee’s Summit.

Chamber Young Professionals Organize Costumes for a Cause Collection The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals (YPs) invited the community to donate their gently used Halloween costumes.

Each quarter the Chamber YPs complete a community service project. Three out of the four projects are done with member businesses, while one non-member project is selected to further increase the YPs outreach efforts. After speaking with

the staff at Operation Breakthrough, the planning committee loved the idea of a costume drive. Every October, Operation Breakthrough provides a Halloween costume to every enrolled child, which the children wear for special events at the center and then take home to wear for other Halloween events with their families. Since Halloween has come and gone, the group thought what better time to donate those old costumes?

PSC to Hold Public Hearing in Lee’s Summit The Missouri Public Service Comission will host a public hearing in Lee’s Summit on the proposed KCP&L electric rate increases.

Citizens Academy Gives Residents Opportunity to Learn About City Government In an effort to promote understanding of local government and to foster future community leaders, the city of Lee’s Summit created a Citizens Academy for residents of Lee’s Summit.

The program is a goal of the Local Government Key Performance Area of the City’s strategic planning process, Lee’s Summit 360°: Charting Tomorrow.

The Citizens Academy is free and open to Lee’s Summit residents who want to gain better insight into the operations of City government and to prepare for greater involvement in the community’s leadership. The Citizens Academy is meant to complement leadership training programs and academies already offered in the community, such as Leadership Lee’s Summit, a program of the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce; the Citizens Police Academy presented by the Lee’s Summit Police Department; and

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Fire Ops 101 presented by the Lee’s Summit Fire Department.

The Citizens Academy, held once a year, will consist of seven sessions, from 8:15 a.m.–noon, twice a month on Saturdays at various City facilities. The first class will be January 8 and the last class will be April 2, 2011.

The program is interactive, with participants working on either a development or redevelopment project that will eventually be presented to a mock City Council for approval. City staff will work with the participants throughout the program to answer questions and guide them through the municipal process.

Chamber to Offer Online Sustainable Business Designation Chamber members will soon have the opportunity to identify themselves as a “sustainable” business on the Chamber’s online directory.

For a $25 one-time processing and posting expense, the Chamber will include the insignia above the member business listing as a way to inform associates and customers of their green business practice.

What qualifies as a sustainable business? Well, it’s a relatively easy set of standards. A business must, at a

minimum, do one of the following:

• Institute energy conservation

measures within the office environment and/or operations of the business.

• Build and/or retrofit energyconscious upgrades into the physical structure.

• Provide energy conservation consulting/construction-related services.

• Develop, manufacture, distribute and/or sell energy conservation products.

“This is a great opportunity for our members to be recognized for their contributions and efforts in becoming a smart, efficient and ultimately sustainable business,” said Rick

Kuhl, chairman of the Chamber’s Business Sustainability Committee.

“Environmental awareness and stewardship is important to consumers, as well as members doing business with members.

In the next few weeks, Chamber members will receive an inquiry with an accompanying application to sign-up as a designated sustainable business. Once approved, the Web directory listing will receive its sustainable business insignia.

Lee’s Summit Chamber Community Health Fair The Chamber, in conjunction with Legacy Park Birthday Bash, will host a Community Health Fair on January 8 from 9 a.m.–noon at Legacy Park Community Center, 901 NE Bluestem Road. This event is free and open to the public.

The Health Fair consists of health information and free screenings from area hospitals and medical businesses.

Call Presence... What is it?

Call presence, it’s a buzz word in the world of telecom today. Have you heard of it? If not, you probably haven’t upgraded your telecommunications system in the last few years. Call presence allows co-workers to view your current availability. Prior to presence, staff would look on the phone terminal to see if their co-worker’s phone extension was occupied. Call presence does that.

In addition, call presence has the capability to give you much more information. You can have icons which appear next to each person’s extension and name. These icons give information about where that party is or what they

are doing. For example if you’re on vacation, coworkers might see a bright colored umbrella next to your name reminding them that your at the beach or somewhere wonderful. You could hover over the icon and get more detail, (Expected return date of December 10, 8 a.m.) Call presence let’s you know if the party you are trying to reach is in a meeting, sick, gone for the day, available, not available or on the phone.

You can even take it as far as knowing that the party you are trying to reach is in the office, but not currently at their desk. When the person uses their phone or keyboard the presence changes to show that they are in the office and at

their desk.

With the growing demand to stay connected, users can change their presence when out of the office via a smart phone. For example, if someone is in a taxi and has time to talk they can change their presence to available and set calls to forward to their cell or put in a note saying “try me on my cell”.
