Employee and individual health costs continue to rise every year. Medicare costs are on the same trend. We are blessed to live in a community with great doctors and hospitals but the current trend proves medical care for the ill alone can’t build a healthy community. With the recent changes in how health plans and Medicare pay for preventative care, now is the perfect time to get to know your health risks before they turn into illnesses. Screening tests are recommended based on your age and family history so the screenings you need depend on “you.” A visit to your family physician or internal medicine physician for a wellness check up is the first step to take advantage of affordable and accessible wellness and disease prevention programs. Nothing is more important to our community’s future than the health of our citizens. Health plans, schools, businesses, and health care providers are all working to become aligned around key areas for a healthy and fit community: • Creating community environments that promote health and safety. • Expanding community offerings for preventive services. • Helping people gain knowledge to make healthy choices. To keep our community healthy in both body and mind, we need to make sure Lee’s Summit residents get the best possible care when they get sick. But the most effective and the most affordable strategy is to keep people from getting sick in the first place. There is also a common focus on other key ways to improve health: • Encouraging individuals to get appropriate health screenings (i.e. mammogram, cholesterol screening, blood pressure check and body mass index percentage) • Offering follow-up services when health risks are identified

• Educating about smoking cessation • Preventing drug and alcohol abuse • Encouraging healthy eating • Promoting physical activity • Advocating programs for mental and emotional well-being We’ve taken a momentous step forward in transformation from a sick-care system to a true health-care system, one that has an emphasis on prevention, health promotion and wellness. The most effective way, and the most cost-effective way of keeping people healthy, is by preventing illness before it occurs. There is much evidence supporting the notion that spending health care dollars on prevention will more than pay for itself long term. Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes - account for 7 of 10 American deaths each year and 75 percent of U.S. health spending. Preventative services are now paid for by health plans and Medicare recipients, with no co-payments or deductibles. In addition, patients with health plan coverage or Medicare are eligible for an annual physician “wellness visit” at no charge. Seventy percent of Medicare patients have at least one chronic health condition and 38 percent have two to four chronic conditions. Providing more preventative care will not just improve patients’ health and save lives, but could save a portion of the 75 percent of our health care dollars currently spent treating preventable chronic illness. By shifting our thinking about health care and moving toward illness prevention disease can be avoided or treated early. Quite simply, prevention is an investment in the future health of our community. This includes kids who live in states where the disease is common or who plan to travel to countries where the disease is common. Meningitis vaccine can be given to kids as young as 9 months who are at risk of contracting meningitis. This includes children with certain immune disorders as well as those who live in (or are planning to travel to) countries where meningitis is common. This vaccine also should be given to teens 13 and older who did not receive it in childhood. Pneumococcal vaccines also can be given to older kids (age 2 and up) who have immunocompromising conditions, such as asplenia or HIV infection, or other conditions, like cochlear implant.

DEMENTIA It is reported by the Alzheimer’s Association that 5.4 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease – 5.2 million of those aged 65 and over. Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and the 5th leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older. It is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. Alzheimer’s disease not only impacts those who have the disease, but the caregivers who support them. In 2011 it was reported by the Alzheimer’s Association that 15.2 million family and friends provided 17.4 billion hours of unpaid care – valued at $210 billion. As a caregiver, it can be overwhelming to understand the changes in your loved one, what care options are appropriate and what resources are available. There are a lot of responsibilities and emotions involved in caring for a loved one, which can often lead to stress and depression. The encouraging news is that there is numerous support options and information available to help. Seeking Physician Input - If you are noticing memory changes in your loved one, begin with a visit to their doctor. If appropriate, they can then refer you to a neurologist who will be able to determine if it’s age-related, mild cognitive impairment, or the beginning stages of dementia, and provide you with information on what to expect. Once there is a diagnosis, begin to understand the progression of the disease and what changes to expect in your loved one. No two people experience dementia the same and the progression of the disease varies from each person, but there are many similarities. Disease Progression - Your role as caregiver will also change as the disease progresses and knowing what to expect is important in preparing for the future. You may begin as a care partner, helping them with ﬁnances, taking them to physician appointments and more. That will change over time, as their cognitive abilities decline and their behaviors change. The important thing to keep in mind through each stage is to help them be as independent as possible. Encouraging them to do the things they

still can do, without causing them frustration or agitation. Taking Care of Yourself - As a caregiver, you also need outlets to connect, recharge and to take care of yourself. Many caregivers attempt to do everything on their own, eventually leading to burnout and frustration.One step to take is to ﬁnd a support group near you. The Alzheimer’s Association is an excellent resource for information as well as locating a support group. There you can connect with others who are experiencing similar situations. Care Options -There are many services to consider as the disease progresses as well. One to consider is respite care. From in-home care options, adult day centers to care facilities that allow individuals to stay for a short period of time, there are a variety of options to help provide support that you need. When the time comes for more skilled care, there are organizations that offer speciﬁc care for those with dementia. They provide the programs, care and surroundings that are appropriate for where they are in the disease process. As you walk through the journey with a loved one, there will be many ups and downs, but remember you are not alone. There are many others in your same position as caregiver. And there are numerous avenues for support and information.

�� Victim of an automobile accident, a 38 year old woman awakens strapped to a gurney surrounded by medical professionals and her disoriented mind screams, “Rape!” but she says nothing as she struggles against the restraints. While talking with an HR representative, a staff person perceives the HR person as demeaning and suddenly he no longer hears the HR person but instead his mother’s voice telling him he’ll never amount to anything and his defenses go up. These are real examples of how routine practices and interactions trigger trauma responses. There is a national Trauma-Informed Care learning community initiative organized by the National Council for Community Behavioral Health that is made up of 60 organizations working and learning together to improve the way they meet the needs of people with trauma experiences. What do we mean by trauma? Trauma refers to intense and overwhelming experiences that involve serious loss, threat or harm to a person’s physical and/or emotional well-being. These experiences may occur at any time in a person’s life. They may involve a single traumatic event or may be repeated over many years. Trauma can overwhelm the person’s coping resources, leading the person to ﬁnd a way of coping that may work in the short run, but may cause serious harm in the long run. You might ask, “Why is understanding someone’s trauma history important to almost everyone?” The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACE) answers this question. The ACE Study looks at how childhood events might affect adult health and it reveals overwhelming proof of the health, social, and economic risks that result from childhood trauma. For more information visit: http://acestudy.org/ More ﬁndings about trauma: • 1 in 6 men have experienced emotional trauma. • 80% of people in psychiatric hospitals have experienced physical or sexual abuse. • 66% of people in substance abuse treatment report childhood abuse or neglect. • 90% of women with alcoholism were sexually abused or suffered severe violence by parents. • Boys who experience or witness violence are 1,000 times more likely to commit violence

than those who do not. • As many as one third of women and 14% of men are survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Why should our organizations and businesses become Trauma-Informed? • Trauma is pervasive. • Trauma’s impact is broad and diverse. • Trauma’s impact is deep and life-shaping. • Trauma, especially interpersonal violence, is often self-perpetuating. • Trauma affects how people approach services. And, it crosses all systems of care. Besides improved well-being, we expect a trauma informed community will see the following outcomes: decrease in violence, increase in quality of life measures, improved employment measures (decrease in sick time, decrease in turnover, and an increase in productivity), and improved school measures (increased attendance and improved academic performance). Embrace the values of safety, collaboration, trustworthiness, empowerment, and choice for our consumers and you will improve your customer relations. • Take time to familiarize the person with the physical environment. • Ask about comfort level with environment (lighting, temperature, sounds, etc.). • Ask before you invite others in the room. • Ask if you can close the door. • Explain rationale for what you are doing and obtain consent. • Ask clients about their preferences for potential difficulties with a specific examination, procedure or treatment. Most people can identify experiences they deem traumatic and heal spontaneously. However, trauma may also lead to a set of symptoms referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is estimated 8-14% of the general population meet criteria for a PTSD diagnosis. Trauma victimization studies show prevalence between 51 and 98% among persons with serious mental illness in the public sector. What was learned is generalist clinicians do not feel equipped to treat trauma and often spend time treating “surface” depression and anxiety but do not get to the root of the issue: trauma. When searching for a clinician who specializes in trauma, it is often difficult to know their skill set based on their degree or credentials.��

�� A recent survey of 830 students in Lee’s Summit middle and high schools showed that 56% and as high as 86% (depending on the school) believed that there is nothing wrong with smoking marijuana. Do you think this is the perception of our entire community? Lee’s Summit CARES Partnership to Prevent Risky Behavior identified the following reasons that reflect the view that marijuana is accepted: low perception of harm, usage rates in Lee’s Summit have increased and consequences for using are not a deterrent. One of the factors of low perception of harm is lack of a grassroots campaign against using marijuana like there has been with tobacco or alcohol. For instance, “Don’t Drink and Drive” has been a message that has been adopted by our entire community. Cigarette packages have “Surgeon General Warning: Cigarette Smoking Can Cause Lung Cancer and Heart Disease.” And, Clean Air Lee’s Summit presented a case for dangers of secondhand smoke. There is currently no image for illegal substances. Another factor is that it is perceived that parents generally think marijuana is okay and is not as dangerous as alcohol or cigarettes. One of the reasons this might be inferred is because of the lack of criminal consequences for smoking or possessing marijuana. This is not by choice but by cause. Most of the students surveyed believed it was easier to function (specifically to drive) high than drunk. When a

person is stopped for suspicion of being under the inﬂuence, it takes much longer to identify the presence of drugs in a person’s system as opposed to alcohol.
