Department of Labor Overtime Ruling Presentation Tuesday, February 18 | 7:30 - 9 a.m. Lee’s Summit Medical Center | 2100 SE Blue Parkway For the first time in 60 years, the U.S. Department of Labor announced a final rule clarifying the types of benefits that must be included in determining an employee’s “regular rate of pay” when calculating overtime wages. The long-awaited Overtime Rule took effect on January 1, 2020 and is still being deciphered by employers across the country. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that non-exempt employees – employees who are eligible for overtime pay – be paid at least oneand-one half times their regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 40 in a workweek. The FLSA defines the regular rate as “all remuneration for employment paid to, or on behalf of, the employee.” Employees subject to certain exclusions are outlined in section 7(e) of the FLSA. As employers have expanded the kinds of benefits they offer in recent years, it has become unclear which benefits need to be included and which can be excluded in determining an employee’s regular rate of pay. To assist in understanding the new Overtime Rule, the Chamber will host an approachable presentation to help employers and business owners prepare for what is expected. Join us Tuesday, February 18, at the Lee’s Summit Medical Center for an opportunity to ask questions and get answers. Topics to include: • The Proposed Rule in a Nutshell • Impact on Employers • A Brief History of The Overtime Rule Saga • Tips for Avoiding Last-Minute Panics

It’s All Fun and Games on this Field Trip Whoever said field trips had to end in high school? The Lee’s Summit Chamber, along with the Chamber’s Young Professional organization, will host the 1st quarter Business Field Trip at Main Event Entertainment! This unique event provides an informational and entertaining outing where members can engage with a local business on another level. Hear from great minds and get to have a little fun! “Main Event is all fun and games but there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to create an epic entertainment experience. Hear from the Technical and Operating Managers about pin setters, laser guns and gravity rope safety. Oh my! The information may even improve your bowling score as there will be an opportunity to experience the fun afterward!” Spots are limited for this series and it always reaches capacity. RSVP early and if you miss this event, keep an eye out for the next Business Field Trip. Learn more at lschamber.com.

New Board Member, Joel Wilson, Named Among 20 Influential Young Professionals Joel Wilson, new to the Chamber’s Board of Directors in 2020, was honored on a list of 20 influential young professionals in the Lee’s Summit area. The list, published in Catalyst: The Business Magazine, identified a group of incredible community leaders in a variety of different fields. Wilson, a Financial Advisor with Edward Jones – Office of Joel Wilson, received the Chamber’s Steve Gouldsmith New Member of the Year Award in 2018 and has proved an asset to the organization since his involvement began. Please help us in congratulating Joel, we appreciate his service and dedication.

The Power of Facebook Check-In Thanks to the world of social media, everyone is an ambassador for brands and businesses – whether they know it or not. Some might share selfies in new clothes they’ve purchased or take a photo of their meal when eating at a local restaurant. These are all organic ways to promote products through personal social platforms. If we’re already doing this, and we don’t even know it, imagine the impact it could have if we did it consciously? We encourage Chamber Members to help support and showcase the businesses of fellow members. One of the most successful ways to do this is through Facebook’s check-in feature. When you’re out shopping, dining or attending an event at a Member business, consider “checking-in” to their Facebook page. This will help grow their reach and help them obtain a larger social media following. Together, we can build better businesses.

Member News & Events Valued Chamber Member, Rody Taylor, Named to National ‘40 Under 40’ List Rody Taylor, owner of KC Dumpster Company in Lee’s Summit, started 2020 with news from Waste 360 that he had been named to their “40 Under 40” list of industry leaders in solid waste and recycling. Taylor, 39, already has 14 years of waste and hauling experience. “I am so excited about the direction our industry is headed and the innovations that will be coming in the years to come,” Taylor said. “It’s an honor to be recognized among my peers as a leader in the waste industry. Look, I know it isn’t a sexy designation, but I am honestly proud of what I do and to earn this honor.” Waste 360 serves 90,000-plus professionals worldwide with information, resources, education and events relative to the waste industry. The annual list, in its fifth year, “recognizes inspiring and innovative professionals under the age of 40 whose work in waste, recycling and organics has made a significant contribution to the industry.” Taylor’s company operates a Source Separated Recycling Program and all diversion programs at the Resource Recovery Park for the City of Lee’s Summit. They also offer a public disposal area, yard waste composting, metal, mattress and electronics recycling and one of two KC-area Household Hazardous Waste facilities for the Mid-America Regional Council. Taylor also started a “free paint” initiative that allows for paint drop off at the disposal area that they mix, repackage and give away. “I believe that most people care about reducing their waste and we as professionals need to see that as a mandate to step up and provide the resources they need,” Taylor said. “This has become very evident to me over the last few years and it drives a lot of what I do.” In addition to his membership with the Chamber, Taylor is an active member of the Lee’s Summit Rotary Club, a member of the 2020 Chamber of Commerce Leadership class and the Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council. Rody and his wife, Sara, live in Lee’s Summit with their three children (Mitchell, Mesa, McKinley). “It is my passion to continue to learn and grow in my industry so that I can bring positive waste solutions to my local community,” he said.
