The NEW Chamber Website... lschamber.com On January 1, 2011 the Lee’s Summit Chamber proudly launched its new website www. lschamber.com. The fresh, new, vibrant look allows for easy navigation and high visibility of Chamber members. “The main purpose of our website is to promote Chamber members, and encourage people to do business with them,” said Gina Seibel, director of communications. “With the new site, it is now easier than ever to locate our directory and support those businesses that invest in our community.” Lee’s Summit’s economic health relies on the success of local businesses. Successful businesses depend on loyal customers. Members and residents are encouraged to choose a Lee’s Summit Chamber member the next time they go shopping or need a service. With nearly 950 member businesses, small and large, people are sure to find a member on www.lschamber.com that can help.
According to a 2008 national study by the Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based market research firm reported the following: • When consumers know that a business is a member of the local chamber, they are 44 percent more likely to think favorably about that business. • Consumers who are told that a business is a chamber member are 51 percent more likely to be highly aware of it and 57 percent more likely to think positively of its local reputation. • Consumers are 63 percent more likely to buy goods and services in the future from a company that they believe is a member of the local chamber of commerce. Be a part of the positive statistics by visiting www.lschamber.com. Features of the new website include a Chamber Events Calendar, Community Calendar of Events, membership information, 2011 health care directory, press room, general information about Lee’s Summit and much more. Technology is NOT a Four Letter Word As with any industry, Information Technology has its own language. With so many acronyms and definitions to understand, it can get confusing and lead to making wrong choices. The following is a list of a few terms to know and understand in relation to the technology you use every day.
• Server– provides information to the
computers connected to it. Information, programs and applications stored on the server can be shared among all of the computers connected to it, avoiding the need to have information stored directly on the hard drive of each computer.
• Network– at least two computers
connected together. There may or may not be a server involved, and the networking may occur through a hard wire or through a wireless means.
• Operating System (OS)– the “brains” of
your computer – allowing the software to run on the hardware. It also allocates memory, processes tasks and accesses peripherals.
• Router– hardware device that routes
data from one network connection to another. Can be set with restrictions to provide protection on what is allowed to a computer.
• Virtual Private Network (VPN)– a
specialized network connection that allows a computer to connect without being in physical proximity to the connection point (i.e. server). This type of set-up is useful for computers that are mobile or located outside of the main location (remote or on-the-go employees).
• Firewall– limits the data/unauthorized
users that can reach your computer or server. It can either be part of hardware (i.e. a router) or a software program.
Your trusted IT provider can help you understand how to make it all work together for you and your business. by Kristen N. Johnson & Connie Smith, Ultreya Solutions Group a service of the Lee’s Summit Chamber’s Technology Committee
Member Awards Ambassador of the Year – Bob Glaser Bob Glaser, Summit Bank of Kansas City, was selected as the Ambassador of the Year. In 2010, Bob recruited 38 new members; and since he began recruiting in 2007, he has brought in 106 new members. He doesn’t just recruit new members – he takes each new member under his wing and mentors them. Bob has attended the majority of Chamber events throughout the year, served as emcee at several ribbon cuttings, served as chair of the Ambassador Committee and helped with Operation Thank You and the VIP Reception. He truly exemplifies the meaning of the word ambassador. Steve Gouldsmith New Member of the Year Marcus Henley Marcus Henley Bukaty Companies, was chosen to receive
from page 1 the Steve Gouldsmith New Member of the Year Award. Marcus immediately jumped into Chamber activities upon his arrival, and attended most every event. He became an active member of the Membership Committee, the Holiday Reception Task Force and the Oktoberfest Committee. During Oktoberfest, Marcus stepped up to the plate to manage the new Sportzelt tent, spending almost the entire weekend at the festival. In one year, Marcus has made a great impact, and given numerous hours of service to the Chamber. Volunteer of the Year – Paul McClain Paul McClain, Freedom Wealth Advisors, was selected to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award. In 2010, Paul participated on the Oktoberfest Committee and chaired the Business Development Council. As chair of the committee, he assisted in lining up speakers for the Chamber’s professional development series, Recess for Success and Wake-Up to Success. Paul also participated in – and graduated from –
Leadership Lee’s Summit in 2010. He has been a great asset to the Chamber. Lifetime Membership Award – Lynn Olive Over the years, the Chamber has honored individuals who have donated many years of service to the Chamber, with a Lifetime Membership Award. This year the award was given to Lynn Olive. Lynn has been an active member of the Chamber since 1994 when she joined her business. In 2001, she joined the Oktoberfest Committee and has been actively involved ever since. She has handled all the volunteer coordination for many years, is on the German meal task force, works the brat tents and the Biergarten. In the past, Lynn has helped on membership drives, delivered membership directories, and served on the annual dinner task force. Her business closed in 2009 and she has been an individual member since that time. Lynn’s countless hours of service have not gone unnoticed, and the Chamber is pleased to honor her with the Lifetime Membership Award.

Business Sustainability Committee Update The main purpose of the Business Sustainability Committee is to “educate, inform, and change business behavior for long term benefits”. Recently there has been a swell of activity coming from the Business Sustainability Committee. Recent accomplishments include the new “Green Business” designation on the Chamber’s online directory. Several qualified businesses have already applied and the green business logo can be easily spotted for those wanting to do business with environmentally conscious businesses. In addition, the committee has adopted its 2011 goals and implementation strategies.
• The top priority for 2011 is to
educate the community on the city’s
efforts and initiatives; electronics and hazardous waste recycling programs, stream team projects, and other city-driven sustainability efforts.
• Plan and coordinate participation in events, educational efforts and employ best practices.
• Promote the Green Business
designation in the online directory.
• Establish an “Adopt-a-City” Street program for Chamber member businesses.
• Involve key businesses in the city
and provide them opportunities to connect with the community as a whole.
