We need assistance in delivering the new 2016 Membership Directories during Operation Thank You. The event is held the week of January 11-15, 2016. You can stop by any time during that week and take as many or as few directories as you have time to deliver. All we ask is that if you take them, you commit to delivering them within the next two weeks. If you find you are unable to do so, we would appreciate your returning them to us so we can be sure they are delivered in a timely fashion! Former Texas Educator Assumes Lead Role at UCM – Lee’s Summit Lisa London, a resident of Fairway, Kan., who has more than 13 years of success in educational program development and university administration in Texas, has been named Director of UCM – Lee’s Summit, the University of Central Missouri’s extended campus facility serving the Kansas City metropolitan area. “We look forward to having Dr. London serve in this key leadership role,” said Laurel Hogue, vice provost for extended studies. “Her many years of higher education experience, along with proven success in relationship development, are exactly what we need for UCM – Lee’s Summit to continue on a path for successful growth and service in the metro area.” London has a passion for career and technical education with a wide variety of experiences and knowledge. This includes her most recent position as associate vice president for the Division for Enterprise Development at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she played a key role in expanding the local and global outreach for the institution. In this capacity from
2004 to 2015, she led a team of approximately 125 employees and 250 instructors, contractors and subject matter experts who deliver workforce training and technical solutions supporting both private and public organizations in Texas and across the globe. London began her career in higher education with the Texas Engineering Extension Service, one of Texas’ largest workforce development agencies and a member of the Texas A&M University System. With more than 2,300 students enrolled this fall, UCM – Lee’s Summit, 850 NW Chipman Road, serves as the university’s residence center for educational opportunities in the Kansas City region. The facility offers nine graduate programs and seven undergraduate degree completion programs for students transferring from a community college.

Dr. Matt Niewald Recognized with 2015 Dentist of the Year Award Dr. Matt Niewald, a general dentist in Lee’s Summit, Mo. received the 2015 Missouri Dental Association (MDA) Dentist of the Year Award at the Association’s House of Delegates 150th Celebration. The Dentist of the Year Award recognizes a member dentist who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Association, to the profession and/or to the community in the past year. This year, Missouri dentists faced a challenge with a large, Missouri-based dental insurance company. The challenges dealt with election processes and bylaws operations, and if the company was acting in compliance
with these. After many weeks with no resolution, three dentists filed suit to bring about a fair and transparent process, which did occur as a result of their initial efforts. Niewald demonstrated outstanding service to the Association, the profession and the community, proving to members that organized dentistry and its leaders are willing to take action when necessary to ensure that third party payers provide transparency in their processes and that providers are treated fairly and honestly. Dr. Niewald is no stranger to demonstrating leadership in the dental association. He has served local societies extensively, is past president of the MDA and has served in various national leadership positions with the American Dental Association.

Lee’s Summit Magic Tree Set to Exceed Donation Record The true spirit of Christmas has been on display nightly at the Lee’s Summit Magic Tree. Through Dec. 18, more than 2,100 pounds of food had been donated in support of Lee’s Summit Social Services. In addition to food bank donations, more than $4,200 has been given at the Magic Tree to support LSSS and its mission to provide clothes, food and monetary support for children, individuals and families in and around the Lee’s Summit area. Much of that financial support came on Dec. 11 when Thrivent Financial matched dollar-for-dollar up to $2,000 on donations received that evening at the Magic Tree.
With time still left to collect, food and monetary donations will far exceed last year, something LSSS Executive Director Matt Sanning is truly thankful for. “The season, thus far, at the Magic Tree has been nothing short of amazing,” Sanning said. “The outpouring of care and the enjoyment that families experience at the Magic Tree has been fantastic. We are grateful for everyone who takes the opportunity to enjoy the season at the Magic Tree with their friends and family.” The Lee’s Summit Magic Tree and 40 Days of Magic runs through Jan. 4, 2016. The Magic Tree is located at I-470 and View High Drive in Lee’s Summit.
