Call for Nominations: 2020 Truly the Best Awards The Lee’s Summit Chamber is calling for nominations for the 2020 Truly the Best Business of the Year Awards. The Chamber is recognizing four businesses in separate award categories: • • • •

TRULY THE BEST NOT FOR PROFIT – Charitable/Service Agency TRULY THE BEST 5 or less full-time equivalent employees TRULY THE BEST 6-20 full-time equivalent employees TRULY THE BEST 20+ full-time equivalent employees

Criteria for the Truly the Best Business of the Year Awards:

Lee’s Summit Chamber member in good standing Service to the community and to the Chamber In business a minimum of three years A commitment to good business practice Prudent business management strategies A history of good employee relations

Nomination forms are available at LSchamber.com and must be returned to the Chamber office by January 31. Nominated businesses will be notified, and completed applications and support documentation must be submitted by February 21. All information on applications will remain confidential. Previous winners from the past five years are not eligible.

Chamber and R-7 School District Accepting Teacher of the Year Nominations

2019 Excellence in Teaching Recipients

When you hear the phrase “outstanding teacher,” who comes to mind? You may want to nominate this person for the Teacher of the Year Award. Twelve R-7 teachers will receive this year’s Excellence In Teaching Award. Each award recipient will also become a finalist for the Lee’s Summit School District’s annual Teacher of the Year Award. The district’s Teacher of the Year goes on to compete in the Missouri State Teacher of the Year program. Any certified teacher, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, and any guidance counselor or library media specialist is eligible for the program. All candidates must have been employed at least five years with the district and currently be working full-time. Former winners who are nominated again are eligible for consideration to receive one of three Teacher of Distinction awards. Teachers of Distinction also interview for Teacher of the Year. The Excellence In Teaching and Teacher Of Distinction award recipients will be selected by a committee composed of R-7 staff and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and the community. The 12 Excellence In Teaching winners will be announced in April and honored at an April reception, where the Teacher of the Year will be announced. Nomination forms will be available to R-7 students in January. Nomination forms are also available via the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District website at www.lsr7.org by searching Teacher of the Year. Chamber to Award $1,000 Scholarships to Area High School Seniors Each year, the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Education Committee awards five $1,000 scholarships to college-bound high school seniors. One scholarship winner is selected from each of the three Lee’s Summit public high schools, a Lee’s Summit private high school and one from a school outside of the district. One of the applicant’s parents must be a full-time employee of a current Chamber member. Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria: • A strong work ethic • A commitment to community involvement • An endless pursuit of continued growth and improvement in all facets of their lives Interested students must have at least a 3.0 unweighted grade point average and submit a completed application no later than 5 p.m. February 7, 2020. Member News & Events The Community is Invited to Attend the Mayor’s Character Breakfast on January 23 The community is invited to join together on Thursday, January 23, to recognize outstanding character at the 16th annual Mayor’s Character Breakfast. Tickets for the popular event are $20 and available at LSCARES.org. As this event typically sells out, attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets by Friday, January 10. The breakfast will be from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Pavilion at John Knox Village, 520 NW Murray Road. The Mayor’s Character Breakfast traditionally includes a sellout crowd of close to 700 attendees. Deadline to purchase tickets is Jan. 11. Rod Handley, founder and president of Character That Counts, is the 2020 keynote speaker at the Character Breakfast. Handley has authored 25 books on accountability and character development. A Lee’s Summit resident, Handley is well known for speaking to students of all ages and professional leaders across the city. The Character Breakfast will also include a message from Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird and presentation of Lee’s Summit CARES annual character awards. These include the Ethics in Business Award and Lifetime Achievement Award as well as Reflections of Character Awards based on positive character traits. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to a true Kansas City icon, Dan Meers, better known as KC Wolf of the Kansas City Chiefs. Meers has entertained fans for 30 years and is the only mascot in the NFL to be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame. Meers will share his inspirational story with attendees, a story that can be further explored in his book “Wolves Can’t Fly.” The Reflections of Character Award will be given to community leaders Rebecca Steele, Angela Hunsucker, Don Frizzell, Jason Langston, Matt Wansing, Damion Cooper, Susie Newsam, Kris Kringle, Susie Zammar-Gale, Detective Chad Cox and Zandra Gottman. The Mayor’s Character Breakfast is presented by Lee’s Summit CARES in partnership with Saint Luke’s East Hospital and Flooring and More. Lee’s Summit CARES is a community coalition that strives to prevent youth substance abuse and violence, empower positive parenting and promote exemplary character. The great work of Lee’s Summit CARES has helped provide the Lee’s Summit community with a healthier and safer environment for children, youth and families.

Summit Technology Academy to host January and February open houses Students and families interested in learning about Summit Technology Academy and the school’s nationally recognized, career-focused programs are invited to two upcoming open house events. In addition to showcasing Summit Technology Academy, the events will include information about the Missouri Innovation Campus (MIC) program, a partnership involving the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, the University of Central Missouri and Metropolitan Community College as well as community organizations and business partners. The open house nights, and back-up inclement weather dates, are: ● 6 p.m. Jan. 9 (inclement weather back-up is Jan. 16) ● 6 p.m. Feb. 6 (inclement weather back-up is Feb. 10) An accelerated early college program breakout session will be presented from 6:45 to 7:15 p.m. in the event center. The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce and Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council co-hosted their annual Holiday Reception on December 4. Members of both organizations were treated to the finest from local food and drink vendors inside the impeccably decorated Historic Longview Mansion. In the spirit of the season, attendees helped collect one of the largest supplies of non-perishable food items for Lee’s Summit Social Services in the event’s history and raised over $800 for Coldwater of Lee’s Summit to ensure the entire community has a blessed holiday season. We are so thankful to be a part of such a giving and caring city!

The Holiday Reception Planning Committee celebrates another successful, collaborative event. We thank them for their hard work!

Attendees were encouraged to bring non-perishable items to donate to Lee’s Summit Social Services. The collection was one of the largest in the history of the event.

The event helped raise over $800 for Coldwater of Lee’s Summit through a fifty-fifty raffle. Staff of the Chamber and Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council were thrilled to present Coldwater with a check this holiday season. page 9
