$1,000 Shop Lee’s Summit Winner Announced
Kathy Hughey is the lucky winner of the Shop Lee’s Summit $1,000 prize. Hughey was awarded her $1,000 check on June 20 during the annual Parks and Recreation concert Rock the Green. The Shop Lee’s Summit contest was created by the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Lee’s Summit to educate and encourage residents to purchase goods and services in Lee’s Summit to improve the quality of the community. When residents Shop, Dine, Play in Lee’s Summit, the additional sales tax dollars goes towards improving the community and supporting its many needs. To enter the contest, residents had to fill out an official entry form and attach five original receipts from five separate businesses in Lee’s Summit (no minimum purchase necessary). This was the third year for the contest, and the numbers continue to grow. The contest began May 1 and ended on May 31. The Chamber received 1,080 entries, totaling $164,842.63. “My staff heard several times how excited residents were about the contest,” said Nancy Bruns, Chamber president. “However, more important than the excitement were the comments from individuals that said the contest made them really stop and think where they decided to spend their money. I think the real success of the campaign comes from the number of individuals we educated and changed who habits on where they spend their dollars.” When asked how she would spend the money, Kathy stated, “More shopping in Lee’s Summit - we’re working on our house, so I’ll be spending it in Lee’s Summit for decorating and building supplies.”
2014 Mid-Year Update, What a Year so Far... To say that 2014 thus far has been an exciting year for the Chamber would be a huge understatement! In March, the Lee’s Summit Chamber received the highest rating, a 5-star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The 5-Star Accreditation recognizes the Chamber for sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community. This is the first time in our organization’s history that we have received this great honor.
In addition to the exciting award, the Chamber has also rolled out a mentoring program for our new members. This program pairs new members to our organization with veteran members. It can sometimes be difficult to get out and network for the first time, but with a mentor/friend by your side, you’re bound to feel more comfortable. With this new program, we are seeing great success with our new members. Thank you to the Board of Directors, Chamber members and staff for making this organization the champion of business in Lee’s Summit. The first half of 2014 has been great, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the reminder of the year.
Yours Truly,
Carolyn P. McKnight, Ed. D. - University of Central Missouri
Chamber Mentoring Program... (continued from cover) Think back to when you first joined the Chamber. For many members going to that first event can be a little intimidating as you walk into the room as a newbie. As a result, the Chamber's Membership Committee developed a mentoring program to help our new members get acquainted with our great organization! Each new member is assigned a mentor based on who would be a like-minded individual, as well as benefit from the connection. The Chamber’s mentoring program rolled out earlier this year, and so far has received great feedback. Angela Brown with Empowering Actions, shared her experience with the mentoring program. Angela’s mentor is Judy Pezzetti with Office Products Alliance. “It was very refreshing and reassuring to know that immediately after paying my membership fee, my mentor sent me an email inviting me to coffee. Her sole reason for meeting with me was to learn all about me and my business, so that I can maximize all the benefits the Chamber has to offer.
The unique thing about our meeting was the fact that she took on the role of a pseudo “business consultant,” who took the time to understand my specific business goals and nuisances. Through this process, we were able to determine the specific Chamber programs and resources that would help facilitate my company’s objectives. Time is money and as a business owner, it’s critical how I spend my time. Therefore, understanding the multitude of opportunities that the Chamber offers and knowing which specific opportunities align with my business goals, keeps me focused and on track. Kudos to the Membership Committee for implementing such a constructive method of orientation. The Mentor Program alone is worth the price of entry. When you add that program along with all of the other benefits and opportunities the Chamber has to offer, you get way more than you ever expect. Thank you Lee’s Summit Chamber for all you do to assist in making our community one of the best places to own a business!” Would you like a mentor to help you get plugged in to the Chamber? Just contact Cathy Young at 816.524.2424 and she can help you out.

Chamber Awards Second Lifelong Learning Scholarship The lifelong learning scholarship was created as a result of the success of the Chamber’s Dancing with the Chamber Stars fundraising events in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The Chamber has not only built upon funding that supports the four high school scholarships awarded annually, but also created an additional $1,000 scholarship for Lifelong Learning.

Ashley Parker, an employee with MCC-Longview, was awarded the second Lifelong Learning Scholarship.
Requirements to apply for the scholarship were as follows: at least 24 years old, employed a minimum of 20 hours per week by a business that is a current member of the Lee's Summit Chamber.
Nancy Do MY Job... Version 2.0 On May 22 Chamber President Nancy Bruns worked at Weed Man-Turf’s Up, 221 NW Commerce Court, alongside owners Jon and Vicky Cundiff. This was the second stop of the quarterly program called, “Nancy Do MY Job”. This program provided Nancy with an inside look at working in the various departments within Weed Man-Turf’s Up. Below are some thoughts from Nancy. “‘It’s a great day at Weed Man!”’That’s how they answered the phone – and that’s the spirit of the business. It was all about great customer service. I was able to talk with each of the departments and couldn’t believe the automated system
Need SBA? Think SBKC!
they have in place! They even had me answer the phone and try to sell a customer on grub control (a couple of prank calls, I might add!)That place is certainly full of action, and I’m very impressed with the business they are running.” “Nancy Do MY Job” was designed to provide the Chamber President the opportunity to experience the day-to-day work within all different types of organizations. This program also allows business owners to interact with Nancy on their turf. Stay tuned to see where Nancy will be next!
