Chamber Supports Continuation of Parks Sales Tax The Lee’s Summit Chamber board of directors overwhelmingly endorsed the continuation of the Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation quarter-cent sales tax. Voters heading to the polls in August will be asked to vote on the renewal, and the Chamber encourages voters to support this important initiative. The Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation department summarized projects to include eight community priorities and 33 goals developed by using research and data collected, analyzing trends and implementing best practices from the industry. Revenues raised will go towards park development, additional practice space, park improvements, an outdoor adventure park, splash pad, wave pool, ice rink and more. Without this current investment in Lee’s Summit Parks, there would be no Legacy Park Community Center, Gamber Community Center, Summit Waves Aquatic Park or the 39 athletic fields for baseball, football, softball and soccer. There would be no Legacy Park Amphitheater, splash pad at Miller J. Fields Park or Early Childhood Development Center. The projects made possible by the quarter-cent sales tax have greatly benefited the community, and the list could continue with the approval of the sales tax continuation. “The umbrella of Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation is vast. I think it is safe to say a good majority of our residents have enjoyed some feature in our community that falls under that umbrella,” said Vicky Cundiff, chair of the Chamber board of directors. “The variety of features available to us for enjoyment and healthy lifestyles is numerous, and continues to increase by the support we provide our Parks department. If you’re unaware of what is available to you through our Parks system, don’t hesitate to explore more information and get outdoors to experience all Lee’s Summit has to offer.” Lee’s Summit residents took the first step in passing the sales tax back in 1996 and, with your support, can continue to make Lee’s Summit a great place to live, work, play and raise a family by voting for the extension of the quarter-cent sales tax.

Ladies, Cocktails & Caddies is Back!

The Chamber’s wildly popular ladies’ golf tournament (minus the caddies of course) is back for its seventh year! This year’s tournament, sponsored by Two Rivers Behavioral Health System, is Friday, July 22 at Teetering Rocks (serious golfers not required). So ladies, it’s time to organize your team of three women. Then, at the tourney luncheon, your team will bid on a fourth player, a male from those showcased in the LIVE AUCTION (yes, you read that correctly, a showcase of men to choose from)! Total number of teams is limited to 18, so get your registration in ASAP. The cost is $50 per player, which includes a fun and delicious luncheon, nine holes of golf, awards reception and cocktail party! Visit LSchamber.com for registration information or call Stacy Needels at 816.524.2424.

Chamber Raffle Winners Drawn The winners of the Chamber Raffle were drawn at the Chamber Golf Classic on June 23, at WinterStone Golf Course. The raffle boasted three prizes, including a 49” flat screen TV, Big Cedar Lodge getaway and Suite for 12 at a Mavericks game. Raffle tickets were sold for $10 each at Chamber events leading up to the tournament. Then, after a hot day on the course, winners were drawn. Congratulations to the winners: Vic Cundiff (TV), Glenna Osborn (Big Cedar) and Sage Norbury (Mavericks Suite). A huge thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s raffle.

Member Events & News Lee’s Summit Mayor Announces 2016 Citizens of the Year Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads announced his selection of longtime entrepreneurs Jonathan “Nick” and Jennifer “Jennie” Swearngin as the recipients of both the 2016 Truman Heartland Community Foundation Citizen of the Year and the Missouri Municipal League Civic Leadership Award because of their long-time support of the community, in particular Hope House.

Because of their hard work and the generosity and support of the community over the years, the events have raised almost $121,000 for Hope House.

For the last nine years, the Swearngins have been raising money for the organization providing victims of domestic violence with shelter and comprehensive services.

“I am so proud of Nick and Jennie and all they are doing. Some of you may not know this, but Nick and Jennie have been entrepreneurs in Lee’s Summit for many years. Yet, with all the stresses and strains involved in operating a small business, they have found time to give back to their community in Lee’s Summit and abroad. They are indicative of the charitable, engaged and communityminded people I am extremely pleased to say call Lee’s Summit home. That’s why I am honored to recognize Nick and Jennie as Lee’s Summit’s Citizens of the Year,” said Lee’s Summit Mayor Randy Rhoads.

Nick founded the “Head Shave for Hope House” event that included a silent auction of donated items and a live auction for the opportunity to shave someone’s head. Over the years, he has pulled stunts including coloring his hair bright colors for a week in advance of the events to raise more money. Jennie’s roles with the events have included assistance setting up and operating the events.

Their support and care for others extends far beyond our Lee’s Summit community and this country. Earlier this year, they along with their son Blake traveled to Romania to work with an orphanage. While at the orphanage they set up and operated a carnival for the children of the city of Campulung and children from a nearby village.

You’re in enough pain to get yourself to an ER. So you walk in, you give your name, you sit and... you wait. And wait. Sometimes for hours. Does that make sense to you? If it’s enough of an emergency to go to an ER, it’s enough of an emergency to be seen by a health professional quickly. Fortunately, our ER takes your time seriously. It’s the least we can do. After all, it is an emergency.
