Member News & Events Rod Handley Named 2018 Citizen of the Year Lee’s Summit Mayor Bill Baird has selected Rod Handley as the 2018 Citizen of the Year for his commitment to the community teaching the importance of character, integrity and accountability. He will be honored at the Missouri Municipal League’s Civic Leadership Banquet as well as the Truman Heartland Community Foundation’s Citizen’s Reception in August and their Gala in September. “It is a privilege to recognize Rod with the Citizen of the Year award. I have great admiration for his work and I’ve seen firsthand the broad impact he has on the youth in our community as well as the adults. Good character is imperative for a thriving community and I’m thankful our city has someone like Rod who enriches the lives of so many by providing the character-building tools essential to a fulfilling life,” said Mayor Baird. “The life principals Rod teaches – character, integrity and accountability - provide the foundation necessary for strong families, resilient youth and a culture of good character in our community.” Handley served as senior vice president and chief operating officer/chief financial officer for the Fellowship

BE THE

of Christian Athletes (FCA) until his departure in May 2000 to form Character That Counts, a nonprofit committed to communicating, serving and training others on character and accountability topics. He is also co-founder of Teaching Guys Infinite Wisdom (TGIW) which began in Lee’s Summit eighteen years ago as a men’s bible study and has expanded to cities nationwide. Handley holds the unique position of character coach for the Lee’s Summit North and Lee’s Summit West high school football teams as well as three high schools in Independence. He is a well-known fixture on the sideline motivating and guiding the young athletes, teaching them how to conduct themselves with character and integrity. During the season, he provides a weekly character message for the team centered on a specific character trait selected by the coach. For some of the players without an active father in their life, Handley has become a father figure and is still involved in the lives of many former players. The prestigious Citizen of the Year award recognizes exceptional citizens whose work and service to the community has significantly enhanced the quality of life for citizens of Lee’s Summit.

As CNO, Krug will be responsible for nursing care throughout Saint Luke’s East, ensuring that services are designed to meet the needs of patients, staff, physicians, and the public. She has been serving as interim CNO since February 2018 in addition to her responsibilities as Director of Patient Care Services. “Susie has served at Saint Luke’s East for more than 12 years,” said Saint Luke’s East Hospital CEO, Ron Baker. “During that time she has exemplified clinical excellence, demonstrated impressive leadership and shown an unwavering commitment to quality care. I know she will do a superb job leading our nursing program.” Krug joined Saint Luke’s in 2001 and has served at Saint Luke’s East since 2006 and brings to this position a strong background in nursing—including 17 years of Emergency Department experience. 2018 John Knox Village Gala Proceeds to Purchase a New Ambulance For the third year in a row, John Knox Village is hosting a gala to raise money for a service that benefits both Village residents and members of the surrounding community. The 2018 John Knox Village Gala: Stayin’ Alive is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, July 21 at The Pavilion, 520 NW Murray Rd. All members of the community are invited to attend. Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase a new ambulance and other life-saving equipment. Nancy Blackwell and Carl Chinnery are the Honorary Chairs for the 2018 Gala. “Both Nancy and Carl have been long-time supporters of John Knox Village and the Foundation, and it means a lot to us that they are taking on this important and distinguished role in our 2018 Gala,” said Gail Benne, president of the John Knox Village Foundation. The 2018 Gala promises to be the best yet as The Pavilion is transformed into a 1970-era disco nightclub. Guests are invited to wear disco-garb or cocktail attire. “With live music by ‘Boogie Wonderland,’ delicious food and drinks, silent and live auctions, and games – such as a

wine pull, plus a life-size version of the iconic game “Operation” – this year’s gala promises to provide lots of excitement and opportunities for fun,” Benne said. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit jkv.org/ foundation or reach out to gala@jkv.org or call 816-3472384. Individuals who aren’t able to attend the event, but who want to donate to the ambulance fund can also visit the Foundation’s web site to learn more. The Village’s emergency services department serves both Village residents and members of the surrounding community. When local emergency services departments are taxed beyond capacity, the Village’s ambulance service can assist with emergency situations and transports between medical facilities. In 2017, Village’s ambulances answered 3,100 calls in and around Lee’s Summit.
