Multi-Chamber Washington DC Fly-In

A delegation representing five chambers of commerce within the region including, Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, South Kansas City, Grandview and Independence made their way to Washington, DC, in early April to discuss public policy and legislative issues important to businesses. The delegation, composed of community business leaders and chamber executives, met with Senators Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill and House of Representatives’ Emanuel Cleaver, Vicki Hartzler and Sam Graves and their respective staff members. Four major issues affecting the business community were the focus of the trip - business taxation and entitlement reform, reliable and secure infrastructure, healthcare and transportation funding. “The Congressional lawmakers were attentive and seemed appreciative of the testimonials being offered by the chambers’ spokespersons and genuinely interested in suggestions offered to address the concerns raised during the visits,” said Lee’s Summit Chamber Vice President Mark Dickey. The delegation also had the opportunity to host a luncheon at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Headquarters, directly across from the White House. The group was able to meet with top policy and public affairs personnel for briefings on important issues that face the nation’s business community. Takeaways from the briefings of the delegation and the U.S. Chamber indicate that Congress and the Administration face a multitude of weighty issues that will have a profound impact on the country’s economic future. The current environment reflects uncertainty and likely inaction moving forward until after the mid-term elections.

Wood Named to Board of Directors

Chamber Committee Highlight: Visitors Council

Jeremy Wood was recently named to the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

The Lee’s Summit Chamber Visitors Council identifies and develops Lee’s Summit’s unique features for the purpose of tourism development and marketing.

Wood is the owner of Cinematic Visions and has been an active volunteer of the Chamber for several years. He has produced several videos for the Chamber, served on the Res in Motus task force and has been the Annual Gala emcee for several years. Wood will serve for the remainder of Bill Baird’s term. Baird recently resigned from the Board after being elected to the R-7 School Board.

2014 has been a busy year for the Visitors Council. Projects have included creating a more user friendly hotel and attractions map, a redesign of LStourism.com, promoting the Third Annual Shop Lee’s Summit contest and spreading the word about the Lee’s Summit Community Calendar. The committee is currently chaired by Paradise Park owner Jon Ellis. The group meets the second Thursday of each month with the location moving around to the various Lee’s Summit attractions. Survey Results are in for ‘Yours Truly’ Campaign In order to assess exactly what residents, visitors and investors think and feel about Lee’s Summit, the City recently launched a comprehensive evaluation process, conducted by North Star, one of the nation’s leading independent community and destination strategy and research companies. North Star compared their finding for Lee’s Summit against their findings for over 200 Cities and 40 States across the nation. Their findings were prefaced by the following statement in their final report which was just recently concluded in April. “Congratulations to Lee’s Summit. Your scores are not only high, BUT they are the highest scores we have ever recorded in each respective category since the creation of our study. In fact, Lee’s Summit is a benchmark community for marketing implementation and success in the nation.” Let’s take a look at just some of the results…. • Our rating as a “Place to Live” is 7.5 times higher than the average • Our rating as a “Place to Visit” is 7.2 times higher than the average. • Our rating as a “Place to Conduct Business” is 12.9 times higher than the National Average. When it comes to “Sense of Community”, 75 percent of survey respondents stated “The marketing and advertising campaign materials make me feel proud of Lee’s Summit.” Other above average ratings included: great quality of life, a place where I belong, business friendly, active arts and cultural scene, full of potential, recreational opportunities, authentic / historic and a place where I belong. Lee’s Summit has fostered a resident passion for their community which is the envy of cities across the country.

Yours Truly,

Jim McKenna, Community Marketing Manager page 8

Member News & Announcements Mid-Continent Public Library Receives National Medal for Museum and Library Service The Institute of Museum and Library Services announced Mid-Continent Public Library of Greater Kansas City, Mo., is one of 10 recipients of this year’s National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for service to the community. The National Medal was presented at an event in Washington, D.C., on May 8. Mid-Continent Public Library serves residents in Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The library system, which turns 50 in 2015, was developed when multiple county and city libraries joined together to provide greater access to the communities they served. Today, the system has 30 branch libraries, four automated library locations, the virtual library, and the Midwest Genealogy Center. The system has put a major emphasis on

early literacy and on ensuring access to resources that both educate and entertain. Mid-Continent Public Library Director Steven V. Potter said the organization is honored to receive the National Medal. “I am thrilled that MCPL has been recognized by IMLS,” said Potter. “Our library is dedicated to providing our communities with the best possible experience, and this is just a wonderful affirmation of all the hard work that our trustees and staff have put toward that effort.” Winners of the National Medal were selected from nationwide nominations of institutions that demonstrate innovative approaches to public service, exceeding the expected levels of community outreach.

We have a tremendously talented medical staff, dedicated employees, loyal volunteers and a board of outstanding community leaders.
