Tim Arbeiter Named Next Chamber President The Chamber board of directors has announced Tim Arbeiter as the new president to lead the organization. Arbeiter will succeed Nancy Bruns upon her retirement effective June 30, 2016. He has served as vice president of the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce since 2006. The Cape Chamber represents 1,400 members and contracts services for economic development and tourism. The selection process began with the Chamber board of directors appointing a selection task force and facilitator who led discussions with board members, past chairs and staff. The task force then launched a national search, reviewed all resumes submitted and selected their top choices to interview. The task force ultimately selected the best candidate to recommend to the board. On May 25, board members unanimously approved the hiring of Tim Arbeiter, who will begin July 5, 2016. “Our initial introduction to Tim was on paper through his resume, which left our entire team impressed and wanting to know more,” said Vic Cundiff, chair of the board. “His well-rounded experience and understanding of chamber, economic development, personal civic engagement, legislative issues, partnerships, events and community development made him a front-runner. By the end of the second interview it was his passion and caring heart that sealed the deal.” Arbeiter has been instrumental in many successful programs in the Cape Girardeau area, including leading efforts for the county’s designation as a Certified Work-Ready Community by the Missouri Governor. Arbeiter has served on multiple boards, including as past president of the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Missouri, and currently serves as secretary and cochair of public policy for the Missouri Economic Development Council. He attained his Institute of Organization Management (IOM) designation from the U.S. Chamber in 2010 and his Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) credential from the International Economic Development Council in 2013. Arbeiter also graduated from the Leadership Missouri Program and is a past board member for the Cape Girardeau Public Schools Board of Education. “I am elated and humbled to be selected to be the next president of the Lee’s Summit Chamber. There are so many wonderful initiatives taking place within the Chamber, as well as the City of Lee’s Summit and I can’t wait to get started,” said Arbeiter.

Department of Labor Changes Overtime Regulations On May 18, 2016, President Obama and Secretary of Labor Perez announced the publication of the Department of Labor’s final rule updating the overtime regulations, which will automatically extend overtime pay protections to over 4 million workers within the first year of implementation. The final ruling focuses primarily on updating the salary and compensation levels needed for executive, administrative and professional workers to be exempt. Specifically, the ruling: • Sets the standard salary level at the 40th percentile of earnings of full-time salaried workers in the lowest-wage Census Region, currently the South ($913 per week; $47,476 annually for a full-year worker); • Sets the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (HCE) subject to a minimal duties test to the annual equivalent of the 90th percentile of full-time salaried workers nationally ($134,004); and • Establishes a mechanism for automatically updating salary and compensation levels every three years to maintain levels at the above percentiles and to ensure that they continue to provide useful and effective tests for exemption. Additionally, the final ruling amends the salary basis test to allow employers to use nondiscretionary bonuses and incentive payments (including commissions) to satisfy up to 10 percent of the new standard salary level. The effective date of the final rule is December 1, 2016. The initial increases to the standard salary level (from $455 to $913 per week) and HCE total annual compensation requirement (from $100,000 to $134,004 per year) will be effective on that date. Future automatic updates to those thresholds will occur every three years, beginning on January 1, 2020. courtesy of the Department of Labor

Craft Beer and Home Brewing to Grow in Downtown Lee’s Summit To meet growing demand, Grains & Taps announced that it will be moving to a bigger location in downtown Lee’s Summit this summer. The three-year-old business plans to continue its unique concept of housing both a bar and a home-brew-supply retail store in one space at its new location,10 SW 3rd St. (previously Mariam’s Memories), which is currently undergoing renovations. The new space will double the square footage of the business. “Variety has become one of the main desires of craft beer consumers. Our new space will allow us to showcase 24 rotating craft beer taps from local breweries, as well as breweries worldwide, a big step up from the 11 we have at our current location,” said Brian Bixby, owner. In addition to beers customers drink at Grains & Taps, a new emphasis will be placed on beer to be sold for enjoying at home by offering a large selection of brews for “mix your own” six packs and single bottle sales. An appetizer menu also is in the works to complement the craft beers available at the bar. The business plans to increase its selection of home brew supplies as well, saying they’re excited to have more
