City Improvements Ride on the April 2013 Ballot I think we can all agree that Lee’s Summit is a beautiful city. There is so much to be proud of, and yet there is always room for improvement.

A great image is easy to destroy and difficult to rebuild. A city must be proactive to keep its polished reputation.

The April 2, 2013 “No Tax Increase” Bond Issue is meant to do just that.

We, as a community, have the opportunity to continue to move Lee’s Summit forward by voting “Yes” on Questions 1 and 2.

Question One will ask voters if they want the City to go ahead with the $2.9 million bond to improve the Legacy Park Amphitheater, rehabilitate the old downtown post office/city hall building, and create a downtown outdoor performance and festival space (see front cover).

Question Two will ask voters if the City should issue bonds for $3 million for constructing road improvements and sidewalks on Orchard Street (see photo above), including rehabilitating existing road improvements, constructing sidewalks, curbs, and enclosed storm drainage facilities, as well as $1.6 million in improvements (road shoulders) to Pryor Road.

During the February Board Meeting, the Chamber Board of Directors unanimously voted to support the “No Tax Increase” Bond Issue ballot initiative because we recognize the importance of maintaining and improving the Lee’s Summit infrastructure and cultural arts.

These improvements to our city will help foster economy, ensure safety, and provide economic wealth and improved quality of life for Lee’s Summit citizens.

Therefore, we ask that you join us and vote to support the April 2, 2013 “No Tax Increase” Bond Issue initiative to help build a better city for tomorrow.

Chamber to Award a New Lifelong Learning Scholarship Due to the success of the Chamber's Dancing with the Chamber Stars fundraising events in 2011 and 2012, the Chamber has not only built upon funding that supports the four high school scholarships that they award annually, but has also created an additional $1,000 scholarship to be awarded this spring.

The Chamber's Education Committee is passionate about lifelong learning and has established a scholarship to support those that seek to continue their education beyond high school.

The Lee's Summit Chamber of Commerce Lifelong Learning Scholarship will be awarded to an individual at least 24 years of age who is employed a minimum of 20 hours per week by a business that is a current member of the Lee's Summit Chamber.

Annual Legislative Day in Jefferson City... Ride the Train!

The Chamber’s Annual Legislative Day in Jefferson City is set for April 10. The cost is $60 per person.

This all-day trip features a train ride to the Capitol, educational opportunities, sightseeing and networking. Attendees will also hear from legislators and state officials and enjoy a private reception.

Chamber Welcomes New Adminstrative Assistant Sue McMilian will join the Chamber staff as administrative assistant on March 4.

McMilian has a long history with chamber work. She began her career immediately out of school at the Independence Chamber and was vice president when she left in 2009. Her most recent chamber experience was in Blue Springs where she was the director of special events.

“Sue worked for me for the nine years that I was at the Independence Chamber and I think she will be a great asset for us,” said President Nancy Bruns. “With her experience, she can immediately begin to assist our staff and the community.”

McMilian graduated from the Institute for Organizational Management (Chamber Institute) in 1998 and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with her to the Lee’s Summit Chamber.

She will work directly with the other chamber staff to continue to provide the programs and services offered by the Chamber.

McMilian is replacing long-time employee Kathy LeChien who retired at the end of February.
