Making Our Voices Heard with Elected Officials Each year the Chamber takes a delegation of members to Washington DC and Jefferson City. Fun fact about this year, both trips are in the same week!
Washington DC Fly-In: April 6-8, 2014 Join the regional chamber Washington DC Fly-In event to meet with our elected officials and department representatives in Washington DC. The chambers of Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs, Independence, Grandview, Raytown, and South Kansas City are joining forces for the third annual trip to DC. Last year’s contingency had the opportunity to meet with U.S. Chamber representatives and members of our Congressional delegation to advocate for pro-business issues that affect small businesses. A meeting will be scheduled prior to our trip to brief attendees, prioritize issues and discuss logistical aspects of the fly-in. Jefferson City Trip: April 9, 2014 This all-day trip features a train ride to the Capitol, educational opportunities, sightseeing and networking. Attendees will also hear from legislators and state officials and enjoy a private reception. Election Time in Lee’s Summit is just around the Corner Tuesday, April 8 marks election day in Lee’s Summit. Lee’s Summit citizens will be electing City Councilmembers, School Board Members and voting on a No Tax Increase Bond Issue.
R-7 School Board Election
In order to help voters make an informed decision, the Lee’s Summit Chamber has teamed up with the Lee’s Summit Journal to host Candidate Forums. Scheduled are two City Council candidate forums and one R-7 School Board forum.
The four candidates running for three open seats include:
City Council Election
City Council candidate forums will be held Tuesday, March 4 and 25 from 6-8 p.m. at the Gamber Center, 4 SE Independence Ave. Take advantage of this opportunity to pose questions to the seven candidates vying for the three open seats on Council. The March 4 forum will address governance issues including: policy development, succession planning, district realignment, budgeting, public/private partnerships and more.
The R-7 School Board candidate forum will be held Wednesday, March 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the Stansberry Leadership Center, 301 NE Tudor Road.

The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce’s Healthcare Committee is hosting a forum entitled, Keeping Your Business Healthy in Today’s Healthcare Environment on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 8–10 a.m. at the UCM Summit Center. The primary focus of the forum is to provide relevant and useful information to business owners as they address issues and make decisions about today’s healthcare environment for themselves and their employees. The Healthcare Committee has assembled a robust line-up including healthcare providers, a healthcare industry expert, an insurance provider and a patient advocate. Each will address their respective area of expertise and answer questions from the attendees. “With the many issues still facing employers and their employees as a result of the Affordable Care Act rollout, the Healthcare Committee was eager to assemble industry experts to help guide businesses in their decision process,” said Healthcare Committee Chair Jeffrey Williams. “We are excited and pleased to have such a knowledgeable panel who will share their industries’ experiences and provide solid guidance. All Chamber members should consider attending.”

Get Ready for the First “Nancy Do MY Job!” The Chamber is excited to roll out a new program in 2014 where Chamber President Nancy Bruns will get out there, roll up her sleeves and work with some of our members. “Nancy Do MY Job” will provide the Chamber President the opportunity to experience the day-to-day to work within all different types of organizations. The idea is not to make
this a walk in the park for Nancy, but rather give her a realistic snapshot of what it’s like to be a part of your business... the good, the bad, the ugly. This program also allows business owners to interact with Nancy on their turf. Lifelong Learning Scholarship... Tell Your Employees The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce will once again award an annual lifelong learning scholarship in the amount of $1000. The scholarship will be awarded to an individual at least 24 years of age who is employed a minimum of 20 hours per week by a business that is a current member of the Lee’s Summit Chamber. The onetime award must be applied toward credit course work at an accredited higher education institution for completion of an undergraduate or certificate degree plan. Previous recipients of this scholarship are ineligible to apply. **Please note: applicants enrolled in postgraduate degree programs are not eligible for this

scholarship; it is intended solely for undergraduate programs. Applicants must: • Be at least 24 years of age • Have earned a high school diploma or GED certificate • Currently work a minimum of 20 hours per week for an active Chamber member business • Provide evidence of current enrollment in an accredited, undergraduate or certificate degree plan Qualifications which are of importance to the scholarship committee are: • A complete application form • Evidence of commitment to lifelong learning and community involvement • An essay of no more than 1,000 words, judged on content related to the points identified on the application Selection Process: The application and essay must be received by the Lee’s Summit Chamber office by 5 p.m. on May 1, 2014. Ribbon Cutting Celebrations LSMC Outpatient Rehab & Sports Medicine
On January 30, LSMC Outpatient Rehab & Sports Medicine celebrated a ribbon cutting at 600 NW Murray Road, Ste. 112. LSMC’s Summit Ridge location offers advanced Physical Therapy, Outpatient Therapy and Speech Therapy services as well as a Sleep Disorder Center. The space has been beautifully remodeled and makes a wonderful addition to our community.

Chamber Committee Highlight - Golf Task Force
Looking for a short-term commitment where you can make an impact, help plan a fun event, and have the opportunity to build relationships with fellow Chamber members? If you answered “yes” to these questions, then the Golf Task Force is FORE you! The Golf Task Force will meet once a month from AprilJuly, with the final meeting being a wrap-up celebration. The task force will help in the selection of contests, sponsor recruitment, auction item solicitation and
tournament logistics (in this case “logistics” equates to hanging out on the course all day, partaking in all of the fun!). This year’s task force is chaired by Ashley Backhus. This year’s tournament is set for Thursday, June 26 at WinterStone Golf Course, so make sure to save the date! Member News & Announcements Truman Medical Centers President/CEO John W. Bluford Announces Retirement John W. Bluford lll, President and CEO of Truman Medical Centers, announced his retirement, effective July 18, to the health system’s Board of Directors, leadership and medical staff. Bluford began his tenure at TMC in 1999, providing fifteen years of progressive leadership and change management to the organization. “During his tenure as CEO, John’s unwavering vision and extraordinary commitment for TMC to provide high-quality health care, better for everyone, has led us to new heights never before imagined,” said Peggy Dunn, TMC Board of Directors Chairman. Dunn said the committee would look internally at possible candidates before broadening the search, if necessary. She
said the transition team intends to identify a successor prior to Bluford’s departure. “It has been an honor and privilege to serve the patients of TMC and the Kansas City and Jackson County community,” Bluford said. “TMC has a strong leadership team and a dedicated staff to carry on our mission and vision. I am proud of what we have accomplished in my time at TMC, and I know the future remains bright for TMC.” Bluford said he intends to remain in the Kansas City area where he will remain civically engaged, participate in local and national boards and continue to speak around the country. He will also concentrate on mentoring the next generation of healthcare leaders through the Bluford Healthcare Leadership Institute, which he established in 2013, and he looks forward to supporting the grocery store initiative at 27th and Troost.

The eighth-annual program honors local women in the creative, entrepreneurial, and nonprofit communities. The Lee’s Summit Chamber is proud to announce that two of our members made the list!
