President Nancy Bruns Announces Retirement After more than 15 years with the organization, Lee’s Summit Chamber President Nancy Bruns has announced her retirement effective June 30, 2016. Bruns began her chamber career in 1986, and has served at three different chambers. She joined the Lee’s Summit Chamber as President in 2000. At that time, the organization employed three full-time staff, operated with a $300,000 budget and sustained a membership of 500 members. Since beginning her tenure, the Lee’s Summit Chamber has grown immensely. The organization gained financial stability and operates debt-free with a $1.2 million budget, employing seven full-time and two part-time employees. Membership has doubled to 1,000 members and continues to attract businesses to the area. In 2005, Bruns was awarded the Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) designation. The organization also received the highest designation 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 2014 under her leadership. Last year, the depot underwent renovations made possible by successful fundraising events, and additional staff was brought on to produce all special publications in house. Bruns’ Chamber leadership expands far beyond Lee’s Summit, having served on the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Missouri (CCEM) board of directors from 1991-2004, including as president in 2002-2003. In 2007, she earned the CCEM “Top Level” award. She also served on the board of the Leadership Missouri Alumni Association, serving as President in 2004. Plans following her retirement include spending time with family, including her new granddaughter, as well as traveling. “It’s been a very tough decision for me to make, but I know it’s the right time for the organization and for me personally,” said Bruns. The board of directors will appoint a search committee soon and a national search will be conducted to find the best person to fill the role. “We have the best staff and board in place for the transition,” said Bruns. “I have a lot invested in this organization and community, and am confident the organization will continue to be successful and grow to new levels. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Lee’s Summit.”

Stay Informed on the Department of Labor’s Overtime Pay Ruling The Chamber is hosting a breakfast from 7:30-9 a.m. Thursday, March 24 at Lee’s Summit Medical Center that will include updates on the Department of Labor's proposed overtime pay ruling. Jim Holland will present the proposal and discuss how it will affect the business community. Employers will want to hear the proposed changes and who will be affected. Not sure what's going on? The Department of Labor is proposing a rule that could affect almost five million workers in the first year. The rule would allow workers earning less than $50,440 a year to be guaranteed overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours. The current threshold is $23,660. There is no cost to attend the event, but RSVPs are required at LSchamber.com. Contact Matt Baird at 816.524.2424 or mbaird@lschamber.com for more information.

Member Events & News continued Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street Hires New Events & Promotions Director Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street (DLSMS), a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the revitalization and historic preservation of Downtown Lee’s Summit, Mo., recently welcomed the addition of Julie Cook as the new events & promotions director. “We are excited to welcome Julie to the DLSMS team. Beyond her impressive list of accomplishments, Julie’s friendly, approachable personality makes her the perfect fit for Downtown Lee’s Summit,” said Donnie Rodgers, executive director. Julie is a 2010 graduate of Iowa State University and earned a master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2012. Prior to her move to Lee’s Summit, Julie spent four years as the director of student involvement for Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. She has managed and staffed over 300 events during her six-year career in higher education and brings a wealth of event planning and marketing experience to the DLSMS staff. While at Westminster, Julie supervised a student programming board, led a new student orientation program and facilitated student leadership development. Julie established a strong partnership with The Brick District, a consortium of local business owners and volunteers, to further integrate the students and campus events with the Fulton community. Julie and her husband Christopher relocated to Lee’s Summit in mid-February and are excited to build connections with the Downtown merchants and community members.
JCI Industries, Inc. Shop Expands 25,000 Square Feet in Lee’s Summit JCI Industries, Inc. (JCI), a leading regional provider of industrial and municipal pumps, fluid-handling equipment, motors, drives and controls, announced the expansion of its shop at its headquarters in Lee’s Summit. “JCI has always prioritized excellence in customer service and a partnering approach with our clients — their business is our business,” said Robert Kopp, CEO. “The expansion allows for increased capacity and capabilities so a greater volume and variety of customer needs can be served in house.” JCI’s Lee’s Summit complex now includes the 45,000-square-foot shop and 18,000-square-foot distribution facility along with office and conference space. The expansion more than doubled the previous shop size, allowing for improved work flow and the accommodation of additional in-house machine tooling and shop equipment. Upgraded forklifts and the addition of multiple jib and overhead cranes, including two 20ton bridge cranes, now provide the capability to handle up to 40 tons with in-house equipment. This increased
lifting capability and space enables work on larger pieces of equipment in JCI’s shop. JCI has also increased machining capabilities with the addition of multiple lathes, a large horizontal boring mill, ID and OD grinders and an in-house blasting booth. “JCI is committed to being a top provider of quality equipment packaging, fabrication and machine shop services and rotating and electrical equipment service and repair,” said Chip Toth, president of JCI. “The shop expansion supports timely responsiveness and turn-around time on our work. It also supports the ongoing growth efforts of our regional business and commitment to Lee’s Summit and the Kansas City area community.” JCI is as an active supporter of the community and works with the Lee’s Summit School District, Cristo Rey Kansas City High School and the University of Central Missouri on educational programs, training, internships and mentoring opportunities.
