Local Community Heroes Honored through Radio Program 106.5 The Wolf, the Chamber and the City have teamed up to recognize individuals and groups with outstanding character and achievement in our community and the metro. Submit your nomination from now until April 16. The radio station picks the winners, which are announced each Thursday morning during the Roger and Codie show. Besides the recognition, the honoree receives a $100 gift card to a Lee’s Summit business. Visit cityofls.net to read about our community’s recipients of this honor, and check back weekly to see if more Lee’s Summit residents are honored. Allison Hoffman, a teacher at Westview Elementary School, was recognized as the first recipient of the Community Heroes Program. The following is an excerpt of the email sent to the radio station by Laura about why Allison should be the recipient of the Community Heroes recognition: “Allison is an amazing teacher as she knows that all children do not learn the same way. This year she changed the seating in her classroom to include alternative seating options like wobble stools, stand up desks and tables instead of desks. She also cares passionately about the success of her students...and has an amazing way of getting to know each child as an individual. Knowing them as people helps her to understand where they are coming from and what could potentially cause struggles at school. Her biggest asset is that she considers the kids to be her kids and she pours her heart and soul into their education,” said Laura. In addition, Phil and Chase Hudson received nominations as Community Heroes. Britny Hudson nominated her father Phil and her brother Chase because of their work dedication and for always thinking about others. Here is what she had to say in her nomination letter about these special men in her life: “Both my older brother and my dad are Lee’s Summit firefighters and they are the most selfless and dedicated men I know! They love what they do and the community they do it for. They truly have their dream jobs and their passion shows. They are there for people experiencing their worst day, yet they handle these situations with grace and compassion. They are my heroes day in and day out. Firefighters or not they would do absolutely anything for their fire family as well as their blood family. The hearts they have are one in a million and that alone surpasses the courage they have as they run into a structure fire. They are my heroes every day,” said Britny. Phil has been employed with the Lee’s Summit Fire Department since September 2014, and Chase has been on the job since June 2016. Congratulations to Lee’s Summit’s Community Heroes Allison Hoffman and Phil and Chase Hudson!

First-Timers’ Frontier Justice Experience by Matthew Shull & Carson Graff
and deciding when, or if, to shoot. This builds on the safety and education training for making a safer community, part of Frontier Justice’s mission statement. Many first-time firearm users may be intimidated by the unknown – the noise, the perceived danger, the range, and the people. The Frontier Justice simulator offers a no-risk environment to get accustomed to the weight and feel of a firearm as well as the time and place to use one. There are hundreds of scenarios to choose from, including voice-activated scenarios that respond to your vocal commands.
Frontier Justice Special Events and Corporate Sales representative Susan Hill invited two members of the Chamber Membership Committee to learn more about what Frontier Justice has to offer. Carson Graff (Bank Midwest) and Matthew Shull (Capital Investment Management) recently took Hill up on her invitation to receive a tour of the Lee’s Summit location and experience the simulator and firearm range. Neither Graff nor Shull had fired a handgun before, but were interested in learning some basics. The Frontier Justice experience, however, was far from basic. After a walk-through of safety and handling procedures by Chuck, an experienced firearm handler and trainer, Shull and Graff took turns reacting to a series of very life-like scenarios in the Situational Awareness and Firearms Training Simulator. These included responding to an office building attack and a seemingly normal walk to your car in a workplace parking lot. Not every simulation required use of your firearm, which was an important aspect of the process of assessing threats
page 7
After trying the simulator, Hill showed her guests through the member lounge and described various party packages and corporate events available, including team-building events, executive retreats and even date night experiences. Hill offered Shull and Graff the opportunity to fire real ammunition in the firearm range. Without hesitation, they agreed to give it a try. Proper eye and ear protection ready, they accessed range check-in through the member lane (skipping the line and any waiting) courtesy of Hill, and moments later were ready to enter the range alongside Chuck. Chuck continually coached about proper grip, trigger control, loading and disarming of the firearm. After Shull fired 25 rounds at a target 21 feet away (getting ever-closer to the red center of the target), Graff took his turn at 25 rounds. With the same one-on-one guidance, Graff placed a nice cluster of rounds on the red center of his target. Frontier Justice is located at 800 NE Jones Industrial Dr. in Lee’s Summit and can be found online at frontierjustice.com. Susan Hill can be reached at 816-336-2600 x119 or by e-mail at susan@frontier-justice.com.
