New Rewards Program for Chamber Members The Chamber Board of Directors has established a new reward program for members. Called the “Chairman’s Club”, any Chamber member can become eligible after recruiting a minimum of five new members each calendar year. Each of them, along with a spouse or significant other, will be invited to a special dinner at the end of each year with the Chair of the Board and the Chamber President. Chairman’s Club members will also receive special recognition at the Annual Gala, receive a special name badge and be recognized in the Chamber Link newsletter and the Annual Report. “Continuing to grow the membership in our Chamber is what makes it so beneficial for everyone,” said Chair of the Board Bob Glaser. “We developed this program as a special thank you for our existing members that work hard to help grow our network. I look forward to having a special dinner with all the future club members.” It’s also important to note that each month the Chamber gives away $200. One hundred dollars for the top recruiter of the month, and the second $100 is a drawing from a list that includes all recruiters during the month. Happy recruiting!

Chamber Awards Scholarships to High School Seniors Each year the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee awards $1,000 scholarships to four high school seniors. One scholarship winner is selected from each of the three Lee’s Summit high schools, and one is selected from a school outside of the district. One parent of each recipient must be a full-time employee of a Chamber member business. Congratulations to the following students who received scholarships in 2013: • Ashlyn Black, Lee’s Summit High School • Lauren Gaunt, Lee’s Summit West High School

• Patrick Graham, Lee’s Summit North High School • Meredith Morris, Blue Springs South High School This year more than 70 applications were received. The judges, made up of Chamber education committee members, said they had a tough time with the decision due to the caliber of applicants. Applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria: • A strong work ethic • A commitment to community involvement • An endless pursuit of continued growth and improvement in all facets of their lives

Luncheon Featured Sprint Center General Manager Chamber members were treated to a presentation by Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Sprint Center, Brenda Tinnen, during the April membership luncheon. Grow Your Network. Grow Your Leads. Did you know that the Lee's Summit Chamber has a Chamber Leads Group? The CLG meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month at noon at Monetti's Taste of Italy. The group is composed of small business professionals who are looking to increase their revenue by forming relationships with other Chamber members for the purpose of exchanging direct client referrals and leads and provide a forum for the discussion of issues which businesses commonly encounter. Small businesses typically have a smaller marketing and sales budget than larger businesses and have less access to professional consulting services. By joining the CLG, businesses have the opportunity to multiply their exposure by educating fellow group members about their business so, when the occasion presents itself, CLG members can promote each other. CLG membership is restricted to one representative from each profession/industry, and has an annual fee of $50. Want to check out a meeting or learn more? Help Prevent Crime with a Little Spring Cleaning... and Repairs With Spring finally in full swing, it’s time to start thinking about property maintenance. Criminologists have proven that crime rates correlate to the number of property code violations in any given business district. Criminals target areas where they cannot be easily seen or heard. Burned out lights and overgrown vegetation provide the cover and concealment criminals often seek. You can help prevent burglaries, property damage, and theft at your business by doing the following: • First, walk the exterior during the day and at night. What can or can’t you see? The business address should be visible from the street. All exterior doors should be well-lit. At night, the parking lot should be uniformly lit (meaning there aren’t any dark places where someone could hide). Shrubs should be trimmed three feet to the ground or lower and trees should be trimmed six feet above the ground or higher. This allows passers-by to clearly see around your business as they walk or drive past. • Second, take corrective action. Repair broken lights; review surveillance equipment to make sure it’s working properly; confirm that all exterior doors shut and lock properly; repair any tears in fencing. • Third, consider a complimentary business security survey by contacting Beth.Glover@cityofls.net. Member News & Announcements MCC-Longview President Prepares for Retirement Fifteen years ago, a Longview Community College hiring committee selected Dr. Fred Grogan to be the new president of the college. During the years Grogan has served as president of MCC-Longview, he has made Longview students and employees proud and is widely considered to have improved the college immensely. Recently, Grogan announced his intent to retire this year, along with a large number of MCC employees. “Dr. Grogan has kept Longview on the cutting edge. He is very supportive of the cultural arts, for which we will be eternally grateful,” said Diana Grahn, humanities division chair. In the fifteen years Grogan has spent at Longview, he has seen countless changes. One such idea was the introduction of the Writing Across the Curriculum program, for which Longview is now nationally recognized. This program is responsible for the many writing projects throughout MCC students’ undergraduate education, which helps prepare MCC students to transfer to a four-year institution. Grogan also saw the beginning of mobile enrollment, where Longview advisors go out into community high schools and enroll adequately prepared students in college courses. He also oversaw the building of the Cultural Arts Center. “In my opinion, of all the Presidents, Fred Grogan is the

most accommodating to ideas of all stripes,” said Elliott Schimmel, social sciences division chair. Grogan said he’s proud of the changes he’s worked on, but he is most proud of MCC students. “Our students do as well, if not better than, those students who begin their college career at a four-year institution. This is our goal as a college, to prepare students to be successful,” Grogan said. Grogan’s decision to retire involved his desire to enjoy physical activities while he is still able, and to spend time with his family, especially his almost-two-year-old grandchild, he said. He doesn’t know whether he’ll go back to teaching. “I think first I’ll take lots of time off to spend time traveling and with family, but I will still be very much involved in this community. I want to stay connected with the community college district,” he said. Grogan is deeply involved in the Lee’s Summit community, as a board member of Lee’s Summit’s Chamber of Commerce, vice-chair of Lee’s Summit’s civic roundtable, and a board member of Lee’s Summit’s symphony. He said he plans to stay in the area—except for travel, starting with the Pacific Northwest and Scotland. A new president has yet to be discovered. “There will be change, but I think positive change. We have hired a good group of new young staff,” Grogan said. article content courtesy of The Current Online

Google Education Leaders visit Lee's Summit R-7 School District to View Schools' Innovative Use of Technology National leaders from Google Education visited Lee's Summit April 10 to learn how R-7 School District schools are using Google technology to enhance day-to-day classroom learning and improve student achievement. Jaime Casap, Google Education evangelist, and Devin Regis, Google Apps for Education associate, spent the morning talking with Lee's Summit R-7 staff members and visiting with students and educators at Longview Farm Elementary. The Google experts also spent time in Michelle Dobbie's fourth grade classroom and observed students working on a project using Google Chromebooks. Lee's Summit R-7 was selected for the visit due to the district's innovative use of Google Apps and Google Chromebooks throughout the district's schools. page 8

During the 2012-13 school year, the R-7 School District is completing a large-scale rollout of Google Apps and Chromebooks thanks to funds provided through the Lee's Summit Educational Foundation's annual fund drive. All R-7 schools are receiving Google Chromebook carts, which contain 30 computers per cart. These mobile Chromebook carts can be moved from classroom to classroom and are used by teachers throughout each school. In addition, the Chromebooks and Google Apps have become a part of the school district's professional development for teachers, allowing educators to incorporate 21st Century skills and share documents and ideas as they collaborate to improve student learning.
