Partnership with Missouri Chamber of Commerce Benefits Small Businesses The Lee’s Summit Chamber has partnered as a member of the Chamber Federation with the Missouri Chamber of Commerce & Industry to lend our support on key business issues in the state of Missouri. As with any memberbased lobbying organization, we may not agree with 100 percent of their positions; however, a unified voice provides the strongest support for the positions we do support in Jefferson City. As part of the partnership, they will provide a free membership to the Missouri Chamber for members with 10 or fewer employees. Our policy prohibits sharing our database to anyone, so if your business qualifies and is interested in Missouri Chamber membership, this presents an excellent opportunity. The Missouri Chamber often seeks small businesses who can provide real life stories on issues. During last year’s legislative session, a local business person, TJ Rehak, was able to assist in bringing changes to Missouri tax notification laws. Senator Kraus drafted the bill after Rehak approached him when an audit forced the small business owner to pay three years in back sales taxes when he had never received the proper notification. Proof that getting involved DOES make a difference! The membership provides a variety of communications to keep you updated including their electronic communication and full-color magazine, “Missouri Business,” six times a year. Each week during the legislative session, you will receive their electronic newsletter to keep you on top of legislative action that impacts your business. As long as you have 10 employees or less, you can take advantage of this offer by contacting Nancy Bruns at nbruns@LSchamber.com.

Voters Approve $40 Million No-tax-increase Bond Issue for LS R-7 Schools Lee’s Summit R-7 voters approved a $40 million no-taxincrease bond issue during an April 7 election. A total of 6,413 people, or 79.3 percent, voted in favor of the issue with 1,675 voting against the bond. The school issue required a four-sevenths majority for approval. Passage of the issue will result in construction of a new Summit Technology Academy/Missouri Innovation Campus as well as improvements at schools throughout the district. The school building improvements are in the areas of classroom instruction, safety and security, health and wellness, ADA access renovations and special education. The issue also will fund playground upgrades to all elementary schools and various maintenance. “We are looking forward to breaking ground for the new school and getting to work on the improvements to our other schools within the next few months,” said

Dr. David McGehee, R-7 superintendent. “Thanks to voter approval of this bond issue, we are able to protect our district’s investment in our current schools and expand our nationally recognized Summit Technology Academy/Missouri Innovation Campus. Especially exciting is our opportunity to partner with the University of Central Missouri for the new Summit Tech and MIC. It is definitely a win-win when you can expand this type of successful program for students while saving money for our taxpayers.” Construction starts later this year with the new school scheduled to open in August 2017. School improvements and maintenance projects begin within the next few months, with the majority of projects complete by either fall 2015 or fall 2016.
