Update on Search for Next Chamber President As current Chamber President Nancy Bruns’ retirement date nears, the Chamber board of directors and selection committee are hard at work looking for the next Chamber President. The deadline for resumes has passed and the interview process will begin soon. “The national search brought us many great candidates who are qualified for the position, and now our job is to find the right fit to lead the organization and be a part of this great community,” said Chair of the Board Vicky Cundiff. Bruns has been with the organization more than 15 years and will retire on June 30. She plans to spend more time traveling and with her family, including her new granddaughter. Bruns also plans to stay active in the Lee’s Summit community, saying, “You can’t get rid of me that easily!”

Chamber Awards $1,000 Scholarships to Area High School Seniors Each year the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee awards $1,000 scholarships to four high school seniors from the area. One scholarship winner is selected from each of the three Lee’s Summit high schools, and one is selected from a school outside of the district. One parent of each recipient must be a full-time employee of a Chamber member business. This year more than 60 applications were received. The judges, made up of Chamber Education Committee members, said they had a tough time making the decision because of the caliber of this year’s applicants. Congratulations to the following high school students who received scholarships: • • • •

Michelle Uptegrove Named R-7 Teacher of the Year Michelle Uptegrove, life skills teacher at Cedar Creek Elementary, was named Lee’s Summit R-7 School District 2016 Teacher of the Year during a surprise announcement at an April 6 community reception. The reception also recognized 12 R-7 teachers who were named Lee’s Summit Chamber Excellence In Teaching Award winners. The Excellence In Teaching program and reception are sponsored by the Chamber and the R-7 School District, and all students, parents, R-7 employees and community members are invited to nominate outstanding teachers. The recognized teachers were selected by a committee composed of R-7 staff and representatives from the Chamber and the community. As Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Uptegrove will go on to participate in the Missouri Teacher of the Year program. An educator for 23 years, she teaches children with special needs at Cedar Creek Elementary. Mrs. Uptegrove previously taught in the life skills program and worked as a resource teacher for learning disabilities at Prairie View Elementary and worked for three years in the Blue Springs School District. The Cedar Creek teacher shared that her teaching experience with special needs children began at age 10 when her youngest sister was born. “She has cerebral palsy, and I learned to bathe, feed and care for her,” she said. “As she grew, I read to her, taught her the alphabet, how to count and use her letter boards to communicate.” Nomination forms highlighted Mrs. Uptegrove’s leadership skills, empathy and advocacy for all children. “Michelle’s passion for diversifying and including all students in the public education system goes above and beyond,” said a coworker. “The pure love she has for these kids is admirable.”

Show-Me Heroes is a cooperative effort between the Missouri Army National Guard and the Missouri Division of Workforce Development. The core mission of the program is to connect Missouri’s returning veterans and active National Guard and Reserve members with meaningful careers throughout Missouri. The mission is two-fold: just as we strive to assist veterans and service members to make those connections, we also seek to connect Missouri’s businesses with highly skilled, trained and motivated workers. For businesses to participate in the Show-Me Heroes program, they take a pledge acknowledging the value that military service and training can bring to the civilian workforce. Hiring veterans and active National Guard and Reserves is more than just one way to pay tribute to the sacrifices made by our uniformed men and women and their families. It’s a decision allowing large corporations and small businesses across the state to take advantage of the most highly trained group of men and women. Since its inception in 2010, over 4,500 employers have taken the pledge and 8,000 veterans have been hired. The program offers tax incentives through Work Opportunity Tax Credits and On the Job Training reimbursement. Take the pledge; visit ShowMeHeroes.mo.gov for more information.
