Contact Heather Thompson, advertising account manager, at hthompson@lschamber.com or 816.524.2424 for details. “My investment in advertising in Catalyst paid off the moment the issue hit the mailbox. As a small business owner, I had to watch my marketing budget carefully, but I was immediately thankful I made the investment in Catalyst. Since the second issue has published, I can track at least three clients back to my Catalyst investment.” - John Beaudoin, KC Communications & Media Matters
Chamber Awards $1,000 Scholarships to Area High School Seniors Each year the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee awards $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors from the area. One scholarship winner is selected from each of the three Lee’s Summit public high schools, a private high school in Lee’s Summit and one from a school outside of the district. One parent of each recipient must be a full-time employee of a Chamber member business. This year more than 60 applications were received. The judges, made up of Chamber Education Committee members, said they had a tough time making the decision because of the caliber of this year’s applicants. Congratulations to the following high school students who received scholarships: • Corbin Healy – Summit Christian Academy • Brayden Bonnesen – Pleasant Hill High School • Madeleine Martin – Lee’s Summit West High School • Haley Hall – Lee’s Summit North High School • Paige Maxwell – Lee’s Summit High School
Corbin Healy, Tyler Morehead, Brayden Bonnesen, Madeleine Martin, Haley Hall and Paige Maxwell
Applicants are evaluated based on a strong work ethic, commitment to community involvement and an endless pursuit of continued growth and improvement in all facets of their lives. The winners were honored at the April Chamber luncheon held at Unity Village.

Message and data rates may apply. For more information visit texthelp.com.
You’re in enough pain to get yourself to an ER. So you walk in, you give your name, you sit and... you wait. And wait. Sometimes for hours. Does that make sense to you? If it’s enough of an emergency to go to an ER, it’s enough of an emergency to be seen by a health professional quickly. Fortunately, our ER takes your time seriously. It’s the least we can do. After all, it is an emergency.

Brad Rackers, theatre director at Lee’s Summit West High School, was named Lee’s Summit R-7 School District 2017 Teacher of the Year during a surprise announcement at an April 12 community reception. The reception also recognized 12 R-7 teachers who were named Lee’s Summit Chamber Excellence In Teaching Award winners. As Teacher of the Year, Mr. Rackers goes on to participate in the Missouri Teacher of the Year program. He has been an educator for 13 years, including seven years with the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District. Rackers has attended and presented at local, regional and national theatre arts conferences and is currently president of the Speech and Theatre Association of Missouri. “The best learning happens when students don’t realize they’re learning,” Mr. Rackers said. “Teaching is all about going on an educational journey with students and letting them make mistakes, supporting them when they fail, reflecting on the successes and challenges throughout the process and celebrating the final product. All students have their own unique set of experiences they bring with them to the classroom each day. I negotiate those circumstances to help them succeed at the highest level.” Mr. Rackers earned a bachelor’s degree in speech and theatre education from Missouri State University and a master’s in education from Baker University, graduating summa cum laude.

Member Events & News KC’s Craft Cocktail Scene on Display at New Spot in Downtown Lee’s Summit Lee’s Summit resident Seth Allen just wanted to find his out-of-town client everything he needed for the perfect craft cocktail. And from that inspiration, Libations & Company, 23 SE Third St. in downtown Lee’s Summit, was born.
Allen’s taste for locally and high-end spirits grew with the opening of the w, a speakeasy-style lounge that opened in 2015 in downtown Lee’s Summit. The ambiance of a vintage feel and look of Libations will be apparent with the recently brought-to-life exposed brick, original ceiling and display of century-old furniture, which includes an 1890s buffet cabinet built in Cincinnati and housed in an establishment of “ill repute” in San Francisco until it finally made its way to Kansas City.
Libations & Co. is Lee’s Summit’s first-ever retail spot where the historical cocktail enthusiast can truly geek out about bitters, bourbon, barrels and anything they will need to craft the textbook drink. Allen has teamed up with all seven Kansas Cityarea distilleries to offer a range of their spirits at Libations & Company. Among them: Union Horse, Tom’s Town, S.D. Strong, Restless Spirits, Lifted Spirits, Mean Mule and J. Rieger & Company. Visitors to the historic building in downtown will also find glassware, barware, 12 different bitters from four manufacturers and a pre-prohibition type feel unlike any retail spot around. Libations will also cater to bartenders, mixologists and rookies to the cocktail scene, offering everything from equipment to drink kits. “We wanted to capture the essence of a lounge bar, where almost this magical thing is happening there with drink recipes, aromatic bitters, it’s a show,” said Allen, 40. “People want to replicate that at home for friends, co-workers.” The Libations seed was planted organically with Allen a few years ago when a Japanese client – who enjoyed American bourbon – wanted to take home everything to make an Old Fashioned. Allen found himself running around KC to find glassware, barware, bourbon and bitters.
“Every piece of furniture has a story in Libations, including shelving out of the original train depot in Lee’s Summit and an overhead luggage carrier from the Santa Fe Railroad line,” Allen said. “I want everything here to tell a story.” Libations will retail higher-end glassware that fits with today’s most popular cocktails and barware – including shakers, strainers, mixing spoons, muddlers and jiggers. They will also carry Elderflower and Rosewater tonics, ginger beer and shrubs mixes, a concentrated cocktail mixer that is a throwback to how fruit and vegetable juices were preserved pre-refrigeration. “It’s a renaissance right now for spirits in Kansas City,” Allen said. “One thing always missing in my professional career in the corporate world: I was producing work but not producing results. For this, I am producing an experience, an education, an ambiance. I love history and I love KC and Lee’s Summit.”
