On Thursday, October 25, more than 450 people attended the second Dancing with the Chamber Stars event to cheer on the eight couples performing.

When asked what being named Dancing with the Chamber Stars Champions meant to the winners, here’s what they had to say:

Mark Parrish, Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys and Debbie Starke, Eastland Community Foundation, were named the 2012 champions. Together this dancing duo raised the most money for the Lee’s Summit Chamber Students in Motion Scholarship Fund.

“We are extremely excited that the event was such an amazing success and to have been able to participate in helping to raise such an incredible amount of money for the scholarship fund,” said the dancing duo of Mark and Debbie. “This whole experience has been both thrilling and humbling.”

All together the eight couples raised $27,375 for the fund. Through the fund, the Chamber awards four $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors each year. Fundraising events for the scholarship fund help to secure the longevity and availability of these scholarships for years to come. One scholarship winner is selected from each of the three Lee’s Summit high schools, and one is selected from a school outside of the district. One of the parents of each recipient must be a full-time employee of a Chamber member business.

Ernest Campbell, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and Ashley Boswell, Great Southern Bank, won a special prize for being the judges’ choice. Members Making Waves Lee’s Summit Journal Wins Gold Medal For the second year in a row, the Lee’s Summit Journal brought home the coveted Gold Medal award in the Class 3 Weeklies category from the 2012 Missouri Press Association Better Newspaper Contest awards banquet held in late September in Columbia. The Gold Medal awards are given to the newspapers who earn the most points in the Better Newspaper Contest in its class. To help earn the Gold Medal award, the Lee’s Summit Journal received first place in the General Excellence category, its first such award in several years. General Excellence rates newspapers on all aspects, including page design, overall look, reporting, advertising, headlines and photos. First place awards were also earned in Best Breaking News Story, Best

News or Feature Series, Best Editorial Pages, Best Special Section (for the annual Guide to Lee’s Summit), Best Coverage of Government and Best Story About Education. Second place awards were given for Front-toBack Newspaper Design, Best Sports Photograph, Best News Content, Best Sports Feature Story and Best Story About Education. The Journal also received several third place and honorable mention awards. “Keeping the Gold Medal in Lee’s

Summit is a huge honor and brings with it a renewed emphasis on responsible reporting and community journalism,” Publisher John Beaudoin said. “Our entire team, both past and present, had a hand in these awards. And being honored by our peers for meaningful journalism is something we can be proud of.”

Saint Luke’s East Hospital Designated Level III Trauma Center Saint Luke’s East Hospital has been designated a Level III Trauma Center after an extensive review by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. This five-year designation recognizes the hospital’s ability to provide assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, and emergency care for patients with time-critical diagnoses such as falls, motor vehicle crashes, acute injuries, stroke, and heart attack. The certification ensures the hospital has key systems and training in place to care for trauma patients, reviewing protocols in areas such as the emergency department, surgical services, anesthesiology, nursing, intensive care unit, laboratory and radiology.

A Level III Trauma Center offers 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and 24-hour-a-day access to traumatrained surgeons, anesthesiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and laboratory and radiology services. In addition, Level III Trauma Centers have close working relationships with local and regional emergency medical services to ensure patients are transported to the most appropriate facility. Injury prevention, outreach activities, and educational programs for nurses, physicians, and allied health care workers involved with trauma are also functions of a Level III Trauma Center. “Having a multidisciplinary team to support both the physical and spiritual needs of patients starting in

the emergency room and after the trauma in outpatient rehabilitation is a critical aspect for a trauma center,” said Trina Cole, R.N., trauma program coordinator. “We are fortunate at Saint Luke’s East Hospital to have all of these services.”

Chamber Recognized with Three Awards in October Lee’s Summit Chamber staff was recognized with three awards last month, one from Chamber of Commerce Executives of Missouri and two from Nonprofit Connect. The Chamber won the Chamber of Commerce Executives of Missouri "2012 Award of Excellence" for programs and campaigns. This award was given during the recent CCEM conference held in Rolla, Mo. The award winning program and campaign was for the Chamber’s 2012 Annual Gala materials. “It’s always nice to receive validation from your peers that the work you and your staff are doing is excellent,” said Chamber President Nancy Bruns. The Chamber was also honored with two first place Philly Awards at an awards breakfast held Monday, October 22. The

Philly Awards are in place to honor excellence in nonprofit communications throughout the Kansas City region. The Chamber received first place honors in the Annual Report and Special Invitation categories for their layout and design. “We are honored to be recognized for our work with a Philly Award,” said Bruns. “Many nonprofits rely on the work of outside ad agencies for the design of their publications. Here at the Chamber we are fortunate to have talented staff to handle these duties, which results in great cost savings for our organization. This allows us to focus on our number one mission here at the Chamber, which is to help our members

be successful… of course it doesn’t hurt to have well–designed materials to help communicate our message.” The 10th Annual Philly Awards were a part of the annual Philanthropy Midwest conference sponsored by NonprofitConnect, Network.Learn.Grow.

Watch for Your Economic Census Form Chances are yours is one of the 16,000 businesses in the Kansas City region that will receive a 2012 Economic Census form from the U.S. Census Bureau in December. Forms go to all but the very smallest businesses in this tally done once every five years. The forms ask for basic information like your location, employment, payroll, and sales by type of product or service. Businesses that receive a form are required by law (Title 13, U.S. Code) to respond.

Businesses, communities and governments use Economic Census statistics for planning and market development. Information is published for more than a thousand industries as well as for states, counties, cities and metropolitan areas at business.census.gov. Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke has called this census "indispensable to understanding America's economy."
